Since then, I've had an offer that fell through and several interviews. My time in the office has been traded for phone calls with recruiters and filling out forms. There's also a fair amount of leisure time, which I'm starting to divert toward projects.

I'll probably put more effort into my off-hours projects going forward, as I don't want the current stresses of my life to rise in the future.

If the question were about sports, then yes, it would be similar. (eg: football) If your child is passionate about football, begs to watch games etc; consider enrolling him in a football league where he will play football and buy him a book that explains real plays that wont talk down to him because he is a child. If you love football and want to see your child play football, but he has expressed no interest in it, it may not be A Really Good Idea(tm).

If your son is passionate about technology and computers, direct him to learning to code the hard way series. Or pick up a book that will teach programming by creating a series of simple games.

If he his not, stop trying to live vicariously through him.

From what I've seen, the problem is that HR only knows what to look for from the job description given by the hiring manager. Typical HR personnel don't have the technical background to properly identify candidates, so you get to play buzzword bingo.

The sad truth is that I know many people in HR as well as hiring managers who weed out resumes for completely arbitrary reasons.

It's all about the form-factor. That Apple recognizes this and is attempting to capitalize on it is fully expected.

If you want to learn anything on a technical level, learn about big-O bounds on runtimes. This will give you an understanding of why some things can't realistically be done by machines. You don't need to hack things together, but you should be able to talk coherently with your tech founders about issues.

It's a job title. It really doesn't mean anything other than that they are likely making a bit more money than mid-level.

I've worked with junior/mid-level devs that are amazing and senior developers that couldn't string three lines of code together.

These tools exist. Emacs, Vim, Komodo Edit/IDE, ... Visual Studio might even have support for Javascript at this point.

I think it lies in the the additional concerns we have as female entrepreneurs. I don’t just worry about my companies’ success, our cash flow, next steps and networking. The term hacker as someone who fiddles with technology out of curiosity predates the negative term for a malicious computer user. I believe it even predates computers.
