I don't consider that a normal nor a healthy opinion. I'd choose happiness over money. Sure there is some level of money that's so low I wouldn't be happy but that just again means I'd choose happiness.

Happiness isn't making the most money possible, at least not for most people. Happiness, for most people, is having a life of people, relationships, meaning and a big part of all of that is working with people you love on something you love.

You're likely to spend 80,000hrs working. It would be nice not to just have to endure those 80,000hrs but actually enjoy them.

That reminds me of the difference between Japanese travel guides and US travel guides.

Most travel guides in the US look like Lonely Planet, Frommers, etc. A big book of words, paragraphs of prose describing places.

Most travel guides in Japan look like catalogs. Most pages are full of small pictures with small descriptions, and then an address and map page/id (maps are included in the guide). I personally find the Japanese guides more interesting because I can browse and look for something that catches my eye. With the US ones I have to spend hours reading it.

Here's an example

https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.risve...

Note: it's the same with restaurant guides. A western guide will often just be listings with descriptions. A Japanese guide will be full of pictures of the food and/or restaurant. Of course Yelp etc have user pictures now-a-days

How is that evidence it's efficient and incorruptible?

for one, there's a limited number of stalls. It certainly wouldn't be shocking if whoever bribed the government coordinator the most got one of the stalls or if people the coordinators closest friends got priority access to the stalls etc...

I don't know the ideal solution. It might be more fair if there was a raffle for stalls each week. Instead we see the same people in the same stalls. Curious how a new farmer gets in to the market. Do they offer more money than someone already there?

Mostly I do. Anyone can be a coal miner. Just show up and start digging. I'm not saying coal miners don't have their expertise and maybe their salary would go up if no one wanted to do the job but "in general" you get paid by how hard it is to find someone qualified to do the job.

All these companies are in layoff mode but because they are trying to be frugal during the recession but none of them actually want to layoff that talent, each of which was one of 100 or of 1000 resumes sent to the company. Google gets 3 million applications a year and still has trouble finding people that can do the jobs they're hiring for.

Queue rant about how the interviewing process sucks.

Maybe it does, but of the people I've interviewed only about 1 in 10 is a clear "yes, this person can code well", 2 are "probably ok" and 7 are "based on the performance/style/etc... from the leetcode question I wouldn't let you near my code base..... maybe you'd rock but you didn't show me you'd rock. You made all kinds of basic mistakes that makes it seem like you don't actually code much or you write lots of bugs. Sorry, I was totally routing for you. I would 100% love to hire you but you failed to show me you can code". That's irrespective of if they "solved it".

CEOs general work harder than workers. They're on 24/7. I don't think I'd ever want to be a CEO of a company as big as Google. They have to deal with 100s of teams as well as 100s of outside companies, governments, etc, all over the world. I really doubt they have it "easy"

Just off the cuff guessing but 12000 people cost $1.2 to $4.8 billon a year

Google has 180k people, minus 12k = 168k. That means their burn rate is 16.8 to 84 billon a year

I'm speaking out of my ass because I don't know the average salary and overhead of a google employee but the low numbers assume $100k a year no zero overhead.

Please check my math

12000 * $100k = 1.2 billon

168k * $100k = 16.8 billon

tagging is 99.9999% a bad thing. I challenge you to walk down Mission St in san francisco and find a single instance of Bansky level commentary. Also, I don't define what Bansky does as tagging. Tagging is basically writing your name/nickname/logo or just writing something meaningless like "fuck the man".

That is not to say I think Bansky's property destruction is ok. I'm happy to see the art, not happy to have someone's property destroyed. I'm really happy when artist get permission (and sponsored) to make street art. Plenty of that in SF.

To anyone that disagrees tell me where you live and I'll be happy to come tag your house and your car and your laptop PC and see if you really find it ok

So they're the ones I need to punch in the face for "pull-to-refresh"? (jk)

Actually though, I absolutely hate that Chrome iOS has pull-to-refresh. I've never in my life wanted to refresh a page by pulling and instead what happens is once or twice a month I'm filling out a form or typing a post and I need to scroll up. I do it instinctively, chrome refreshes, I lose everything I just typed. Thanks Chrome

You become confident by taking on challenges, repeatedly coming out on top, and providing your brain undeniable evidence you are who you say you are.

It's not enough for many people, including myself

sf is worst for car break-ins. organized crime drive down the street with one person walking and looking in cars. if they see something they bust the window, grab the stuff, hop in the van.

frustratingly it seems an easy problem to solve. given it's likely a few small groups it should only take a few honeypot cars to catch them.

Sf effectively has no police tho

There are millions of vegatarians that like meat like products. See the 100s of products made from things like wheat gluten that Buddhist monks have been eating for 1000s of years

I don't know a source on the history of all of it but I've been to several restaurants in Asia that specialize in dishes that taste like they're made with meat but aren't

this came up resently tho

https://youtu.be/lrrmysxnTdA

I really hope it is because I get maybe 1 person every 8 months to write back so if the average person has so many dates they need an app to track them all that's just seriously depressing that I'm so far off the norm.

For a body, with bones, since they can't stretch. All you need is rotation at each joint. You can get away with 10/11 bits per axis.

So for a full body you should be able to compress to 200 bytes per frame for 50 joints. That would mean 300k for 1 minute of animation at 30fps. Interpolate to get 60fps. That doesn't include faces.

If you do faces like Apple does, which IIUC is just N morph targets where N is like 15? Those are 1 weight each and you could easily make those 1 byte per weight or less so that's 27k for 1 minute of animation

Both of those could probably easily be compressed by storing deltas like draco or fit to curves for lots more compression.

The worst experience for me is trying to play videos in the google photos mobile app (or the website). It can take 1-2-3-4 minutes (or never) for it to finally play a video I uploaded from my phone a few days, weeks ago.

Spend too much time on Hacker News? I made an extension to freeze the front page so it updates once every 6 hours.

Me, I just open a guest account, or a new profile, etc. Meaning, the extension is at most a reminder to try to stop. it's still trivial to bypass

You have that backward

If I’m in a room with no chairs, there would be no chairs unless one is added visually. They wouldn’t walk through my bed because they aren’t in my room.

If you're sitting on your bed with your AR googles there is a bed in your room. If they are standing in their room they'll be standing or sitting through your bed. They have no concept of where your bed is because your bed doesn't exist in their room.

Tons of AR demos try to show this feature. Tons of companies are working on it. Most believe it's a mass market feature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7d59O6cfaM0

https://youtu.be/uVEALvpoiMQ?t=55

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PG3tQYlZ6JQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd2GK0qDtRg

But it's unlikely to work because each person's surroundings don't match every other persons. One's at a desk, One's at a cafe, One's in their bed, One's on their soft. They aren't each positioned in a way they can all appear in each others AR.

Maybe this will make it clearer. Imagine you're on your bed laying down. You want to AR video conference with your friend. They're in the bathroom. Where does their AR project your body? Your body is laying down. There's no place to project your body in the bathroom that fits you lying down.

This biggest issue I have with React is that I always feel like I have to re-write my model to use it. I've already got a model, now I want to add a UI. I try, and at least for me, React doesn't like it.

A simple example might be a tree structure. Think of folders and files on your computer. So first I go implemented a file system and I have folders that are a collection of files and folders. This data structure is hierarchical.

Now I want to make a React based UI where the user can create and delete folders and files.

5 folders deep the user want's to add a file. According to all the react docs I'm not allowed to just add a file to that folder as that would be mutating data. Instead I need to make a new folder, copy all the old entries to it, put the new file in. But, since it's 5 level deep subfolder, by the same rule, I need to do the same with its parent (make a new parent, copy all the old entries except the old folder, put in the new folder that's holding the new file). Oh but we're 5 levels deep so repeat all the way up the tree.

React people will often say "flatten your data" but that's the entire point, I shouldn't have to change my model to satisfy the UI library! I've already got working code without a UI. I just want to add a UI, not re-write all the other non-UI code.

I'm sure I just don't get it. Maybe a react expert will tell me how I use react without having to change my model.

I don't think I agree that relationships are shallow. Sure some are but not all of them. And even the ones that aren't deep can be extremely meaningful. For example, being a good teacher and influencing your students in their lives (teaching them something, inspiring them, etc...). Those seem meaning full to me, unless you're a nihilist.

I think a life full of connection is generally better than one with no connection. I'll even go so far is if anyone response to this saying they're better off with no connection they're lying because the fact that they wrote a response at all suggests they're trying to connect. I'm not saying HN = connection but writing to people in forums is reaching for connection.

I also don't agree contentment is the end of it. I know of every few people who claim being content is best who would give up their partner or be just as happy without them.

YouTube Addiction 4 years ago

I spend was too much time on the internet too like right now checking hn

but for me I chalk it up to lack of other things to do. I don't have a lot of friends, it's hard to make new ones, covid doesn't help, at the moment I've got no personal projects except maybe trying new recipes now and then.

that said, if I do find other activities I have no trouble doing them. I'm taking a class for example, meet the friends I do have when they are available, etc

so I doesn't feel like an addiction in my case even though I fully feel I spent way too much time on the internet
