I made something like this for TV shows and movies using floppy disks. Each floppy has a text file with filepaths of videos on a hard drive. When the floppy is inserted a bash script detects it and plays a random video from the text file on the floppy.

I like the physicality of systems like this. It is much more satisfying to to flick through physical items than to scroll through a digital list of things.

I'm stuck at "iatetomatoesyesterday0265Z#521juneVpepsiVIIxngxcaboutAg[moon emojis]italy2020Bf7+" trying to solve the chess notation puzzle.

I especially laughed at the rule "must include today's Worldle" and I'm happy with my solution including every emoji for "must include the current phase of the moon as an emoji."

(HackerNews doesn't seem to display emoji. My solution is to paste every moon phase emoji.)

This reminds me of trying to manually construct an Autogram like below. This one is a quote someone else made. I tried to do it myself and it is so hard because the counts keep changing as you write out other counts!

I like the one called "The Hobgoblin." The student asks "why don't all these commands follow the same pattern?"

It doesn't make sense to my why the three "view" commands have different nomenclatures, but it /sort of/ makes sense that the two destructive ones have different syntaxes. It would hurt to think you're deleting a remote reference and accidentally deleting a local branch.

What's the point of the Master throwing himself off the railing when the novice runs `git -h branch`?

I'm running it and git responds "unknown option: -h" then displays a short version of the help menu. Maybe it is a joke on showing the short help menu even when using incorrect syntax?

Consider me absolutely plussed.

Hello! I'm Steve Geluso. I'm in Seattle looking for work. The health industry has been on my eye for a second. I've spent the last three years as a lead instructor at boot camp schools. I was full time at Google, I freelanced, and I worked here in Seattle at Moby Inc. all before doing education. I'm definitely looking to get back in to engineering, especially with a company that has practical impact.

Ridiculous. Why does it become so slow though?

Atom is free. Sublime costs $70. Plus, Atom comes with several lovely features Sublime doesn't have. Pay less, get more? Great deal! It's funny to catch friends looking at Sublime's payment popup window. I always joke, "oh, you're still evaluating?" Of course they're not evaluating. They're never going to pay for it. What a nuisance.

Atom has excellent window management. It's very easy to drag a tab and split it half-and-half with any other window horizontally or vertically. Amazing! Sublime doesn't do this.

Atom allows me to rearrange files in the left-nav. I can drag a file from one directory to another. Sublime doesn't do this.

Those two simple features alone are killer features for me. I don't see why Sublime doesn't copy them.

I understand Sublime has some cool multiple cursor stuff. My friend has definitely wowed me with a specific example before. I use vim motions inside Atom, which are great, and I'll occasionally open a file in native vim if I want to use more powerful features like recording macros.

Sublime's code-preview side-bar is semi-useful. It definitely looks pretty. I used an Atom plugin that emulated that behavior but ultimately disabled it to gain screen real estate. Also, long files with redundant code blocks (that looks oh-so pretty in that side bar) is bad code! Keep files short, gain screen real estate, and there you go! I swear, I worked with someone who used Sublime and he wrote the longest, most redundant code I've ever seen. I assumed he loved looking at the code in that preview side bar. I admit: the experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

Those are my reasons for using Atom over Sublime. Sorry I don't have enough experience with VSCode to answer your actual question!

Where'd they get the lyric data for this analysis? In my experience this data in bulk is all incredibly locked down!

Wow, it's really annoying that there's no way to type text in and get that shape. I get that it's cool that it will (sometimes) recognize what I draw, but apparently I can't draw the Space Needle for the world! It would be nice to still be able to search their images with text manually instead of having to try to draw everything you want when you know you'll use what they have.

Agreed. A P2P program with a browser? Come on! We /already have/ wonderful P2P programs. I sense browsers becoming awfully bloated. And for who's benefit? Google's.

The cover photo is to social networks as extra blades are to razors. Features are being stockpiled as if these companies were caught up in an arms race. It seems platform won't risk being caught without equivalencies, without questioning the worth of mimicking in the first place.

I'd like to see more confidence shown by social networks. Who's forging ahead when they're all chasing each other's tails?

This is my first post to HN. I'm not sure where "text" shows up. Here is my commentary for this post:

Many articles have raved about how the new Facebook profiles let users add a bit of creative flair to their profiles. What I haven't seen reported is the potential for users to post creative content on other users' profiles. Enter Tagsie.

Tagsie lets users quickly tag many of their friends in one photo. Clever users can use Tagsie on five photos to exploit the design of the new Facebook profiles and plaster banners on their friends' profiles.

Facebook should change the way photos are chosen for the new profile. Users should opt-in to what is on their profile; users should not have to opt-out. There should be a way to keep others from posting vulgar things on my profile. Worst, users who haven't chosen to see the new profiles may still have banners hanging on their profile without ever knowing.

After my room mate and I built this I was able to hang "STEVE" across the profiles of all my friends. Friends who shared my name were pleased.

I found two orders listed under my zipcode. I called UPS and asked to verify the address on each one. The customer service representative uncandidly gave up my (own!) address. Excited, I asked if the package is being delivered under my name or the name of my room mate. It is sufficient to say that now I'm jealous. I'm excited to tell him, "Dude, you're getting a Cr-48!"

The one thing that worries me is how easy it was to obtain the address information. Hopefully no one nearby tries to poach the package as it arrives.

Exactly! I was disappointed to see this last part in their mission statement:

"With current systems, focus on the keyboard is always needed. It is almost impossible to slide the finger on letters without paying attention on the screen. Focusing elsewhere, even for a split second makes it extremely difficult to resume the word in-progress."

This is the exact assumption they are battling with tap typing. I wish they would realize that their same system could infer tap points given a swipe path.

Let the users type how they want, whether tap or swipe, and let their algorithms figure out the rest.

I competed in Hack-U at UW this year! I was surprised to see a familiar face in the movie.
