There are many other countries where I have experienced more societal meddling with neighbors' business. Ignoring the obvious authoritarian countries, many western european countries have a culture of making sure you are doing the normal or right thing. Germany is the easiest example.

Well that is exactly what Formula 1 is. Unlike NASCAR or Indycar where everything is prescribed, there is a formula which sets the outlines of the box and teams are free to play within that box. The box has just gotten really small in the past couple of decades.

I loved the movie when it was released, and felt it was true in spirit to the book. Sure, some of the details were missed or altered, but that was to be expected in a movie adaptation of a book with so many details. Herbert was on the set and at least had some input. Baron Harkkonen has to be one of the most memorable movie characters ever.

His son Brian and Kevin J Anderson did write the last installment based on detailed notes from Frank Herbert, so at least the story is complete.

While their writing is not as brilliant as Frank Herbert's, the books they wrote, mainly the prequels, have helped me understand just how big the original vision was and have helped me enjoy the sequels more. God Emperor is truly as masterpiece, but it took a couple of reads, and the sequels, for me to appreciate it more.

It's great when women win these races, and I wish there were more, but don't get the misperception they are somehow faster in this sport compared to men than in other sports. It all depends who shows up on the start line. Elite women are faster than nearly all the men, so if an elite woman shows up, but no elite men do, she will likely win. List of ultrarunning records: https://ultrarunning.com/featured/ultrarunning-magazine-all-... Normally awards are for "First Place Male" and First Place Female." Not sure why this race had an award for "overall."

Pretty soon the internet will be the place for bots to meet and manipulate one another. I'm sure this is happening to some extent already.

The Democrat bots are triggering the Republican bots, and the Russian bots are fighting the Chinese bots for mindshare. Googlebot cannot save us.

Freedom of speech is the social process that works because ideas can be aired and then opposed or supported. Free conversations are where extremes can be moderated. Driving ideas or words underground where they cannot be easily heard or clearly countered is a path to authoritarianism.

While I agree there have been no real features added for a long time, and there are significant gaps, it would be really difficult for me to leave Strava at this point. As a trail runner, all of my running friends are there and it is the only social network I use each day. I use it for daily motivation, route finding, comparison, running log and workout analysis. Most importantly, it has enabled me to connect with dozens of other runners in real life who I never would have met and run with.

Just start using curated link sites instead of google. Make your own curated link site about something you know and care about. Nobody is making you google anything.

I'm not exactly sure what you are saying. Elites are outliers by definition. Elite runners are mostly elite because of genetics. Then they train hard to realize their potential. 99% could never become elite in traditional running events, no matter how much, how hard or how smart they train. The top 1/10 of 1% of the general population is more likely the definition of elite in running.

I have seen many women win overall races, at distances from 5k to 200 miles. But what is always left out of these articles is the relative talent and fitness of the entire field. Elite-level women can beat 90% of all men. So if a male in the top 10% doesn't show up to race, elite women can win the overall. This is what is happening in all of these cases. I love to see women win the overall, but even they would say it depends entirely on who shows up on the start line.

Publications like those you named are tuned to your particular brand of "bs" but they have just as much bias as publications you find distasteful. That is the state of our news these days. I can't think of a mainstream news org on that level that is without significant bias.

As a competitive athlete, I value a fair playing field. I don't want the winner to be the one with the best scientific team behind them. That just becomes a race to spend more than anyone else and also happens to leave a trail of damaged or dead athletes. It would be totally de-motivating if I thought everybody was doping and it was just the best doper who wins.

The language and imagery of this poem is worth the effort it takes to read it. It helps to have a good mythology reference nearby because he wraps the biblical story in references to classical mythology which gives it all a deeper meaning. It is amazing that he was blind when he wrote it and dictated a new section from memory each morning.

Haha you really believe this? Everybody lost because of the misuse. The effectiveness of real emails is way down from 15 years ago. Obviously there are many factors, like multitudes of alternative services, but wading through tons of spam opened the door to those new options. The same fate probably awaits today's popular services. We will move on, they will die.

Perhaps you are mixing up Augustus (Caesar Augustus 63 BC - 14 AD) with Constantine (272-337 AD). Tiberius Caesar Augustus, the adopted son of Augustus, was the Roman ruler when Jesus was born.

Constantine's mother, Helena, converted to Christianity, and that greatly influenced his thinking, whether or not you believe he actually was a Christian himself.

Thanks for the feedback. Bubble envelopes don't really protect CD jewel cases very well, which is why I create my own packaging by wrapping the cases individually in recycled cardboard. Simple and cheap. CDs are amazingly resilient and with a proper polishing machine scratches can be completely removed without changing the data on the disc. It is damage on the non-playing side of CDs which is impossible to recover from.

"This sort of thing is common when buying used CDs, especially if they need to transit a USPS international shipping center. "

As a used CD seller who often ships internationally with no complaints, I am interested in learning more about what is behind this statement.

This article only addresses public schools. States have had to reduce funding to those schools because of rising healthcare and entitlement costs, along with lack of public will to spend more on them. We all can see there is a giant marketing machine at these universities and private schools which have convinced many students and parents that the only way to a successful life is to enter into a long-term debt commitment. The article you link to was written by one of these marketers. It is nearly impossible to be denied one of these parent-student loans. And these loans can never be dismissed by bankruptcy, unlike other loans (I am not advocating not paying your debts, but use this as a further illustration of the way education and government have conspired to create this situation).
