Do you care to share details on your assessment about onboarding and marketing?

I've been using this tool for a few months consistently and it is providing the same value that Pocket did to me. I think a big part of the PH launch failure was the audience, while the app didn't get any attention in Product Hunt, I actually got a few dozens users from a single post in Threads. Even a key member of Pocket's founding team commented in that post.

After many years of discouraging women and other underrepresented minorities in tech, those groups have a clear disadvantage and creating groups and other ways to help them catch up is what we need to balance things out.

You are right about one thing, this isn’t only a problem within tech, there are many other industries and careers where women and other underrepresented minorities haven’t been given a chance to succeed and show their capabilities. But it has to start somewhere and with tech being so important for everything we do in our lives everyday, it just makes sense to be louder about this in this community to pledge for a change.

Experts become experts after years of experience, coaching, support, and having people who approve of them and their knowledge all of the time. Women and minorities lack that support, like I said, we are just playing catch up now.

To me, the cons of working at a startup in SV are these:

- lower salary than bigger cos

- mostly smaller/less challenging projects

- low chances of ever liquidating RSUs and if you do, the value will more likely be low with some very rare exceptions

- it's harder (or impossible) to achieve a decent lifestyle living in SF/Bay area with a startup salary

- lack of diversity in most small startup teams

I do believe that the majority of coding will be replaced by AI or some automated process requiring some inputs and expected results to "code" an application. However, this article reads like an advertisement, and it fails to go deeper into the topic at hand, unfortunately.

A developer becomes a "great developer" when the company, team, resources, projects, recognition, etc., are compatible with that person. Under that logic, I believe any programmer can be great if they desire to do so and find the environment and motivation to thrive.

Most technical interviews fail to find the right people because interviewers and hiring managers usually go at it with an "idea" of what a "great developer" looks like to them. In most cases, everyone ends up hiring people who don't work out and miss out on people who could have become the "great developers" there were looking for in the first place.

I would pay for a social network that can offer a simple UI, that works on any device (have you tried to use Instagram on an iPad Pro), and that can help me switch between private, anonymous, and public posts intermittently.

Whatever the output, the Uber story will surely be an interesting startup/VC/capitalism case study in the near future.

Based on the description it looks like you'll be doing some programming and working closely with software engineers. If you don't have a lot of programming experience this could be a great way to learn and get your foot in the door.

Yes DuckDuckGo is really a good option. Also Bing from Microsoft is pretty good these days despite the bad reputation.

I agree with some of the points in this blog post. However, shouldn't the same advice apply to companies that use the same useless templates to describe development positions and then spend little to no time telling potential candidates about the type of work they will be doing? In today's world, getting a good developer is as hard as getting a good development job.

blogspam? I personally curate articles that I think are interesting and add some commentary sometimes. If providing a summary and a link to the original article is blogspam then I guess hackernews also qualifies as one - based on your poor point of view.

True about product placement, very possible. However, Microsoft made lots of changes to their entire platform and executive line up so I am expecting nothing but bold changes and interesting stuff coming from them this year- I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Getting close to 200K working full-time as a software engineer is achievable. You need to work hard and I don't mean number of hours but show that your work has an impact in your team and your company. My advice to you is to look for companies in the rise, the ones that are either profitable or are funded and in the tech/internet industry. I am in Austin, TX and this salary is not far from what some companies pay here to their software engineers (HomeAway, RetailMeNot, Tableau, etc...)

You have done much better than many of us, allow us to decide if your current experiences are valuable or not... you have always been a source of motivation to a lot of people, keep the positive attitude.

Derek, you need to move on and let the past be there, in the past. All the stuff you are writing about is about the same thing that happened years ago and we all know about it. It's time to move on, we want to know what's next.

New Twitter app for iPad... your thoughts? My feedback is that the Twitter team really dropped the ball on this one, they had a really good UI with the previous version and instead of making it better they decided to create a new app that looks exactly like a blown up Twitter iPhone app - why? to have consistency? I think this is a mistake, consistency is good but creating an app that takes advantage of the device's size and capabilities is more important - IMO.
