Ask HN: AWS Down? 2 years ago

This appears to be resolved. AWS posted an update to their status page, which matches some of the observations in this thread about it being ISP-specific:

[RESOLVED] External Connectivity Issues

Between 11:43 AM and 1:30 PM PST some customers may have experienced connectivity issues between an external provider outside of our network and AWS destinations. This issue impacted connectivity originating from California. Connectivity to instances and services within the Region was not impacted during this issue. All AWS Services have been, and continue to operate normally.

Depending on the application, there are some options for process-internal multi-machine shared state - Erlang's mnesia distributed database, for instance.

I submitted this article (a little warily because I know the front page has been inundated with this story) because it appears to contain the new-to-me information that an arrest in the case was made on June 28 and that the SFPD verified this on July 29.

(edit: Whoops, misread the date - sorry. This story does still seem to have more info from the SFPD than others I've read.)

The deaths from solar appear to be from falls while installing roof-mounted systems; this would be primarily applicable to residential and small commercial solar systems, whereas most larger systems will tend to be ground-mounted and safer to construct.

I'm a Stanford fan, so here's a (nit-picky?) deconstruction of http://cardinalupdate.com/stanford-basketball/game-recap/sta... - the recap of the team's first game.

"Stanford has already started living up to monumental expectations with a good first game": I'm not sure where the "monumental expectations" comes from; Stanford finished below .500 last year and was picked 9th in the Pac-10 preseason media poll.

"Stanford defeated San Diego with domination in offensive rebounding and an additional beat in possession management.": Not sure what "an additional beat in" means here.

"Stanford has incredible expectations for this season, and this victory over Cardinal was a good start.": Should be "over the Toreros" or "for the Cardinal".

Overall, though, it's pretty slick.
