Yes, I actually do need a faster dishwasher, thank you. Last 3 dishwashers I've owned have taken between 2 and 2.5 hours to do a load. Between my large family and frequently hosting people I am constantly waiting for the dishwasher to finish.

In Canada we have something called the "Tax Free Savings Account" which functions in a very similar manner. EXCEPT when the CRA started figuring out people were using it for private assets, like non-public company shares, they changed the rules.
I have a 2018 VW Atlas and its automated braking system has done the right thing 99.9% of the time. It's definitely saved me from 5-6 accidents -- being cut off a number of times, a racoon jumping in front of my car, and that one time my attention waned.
My Tesla, on the other hand, get's it right about 10% of the time. I wanted to type a higher percentage, but phantom breaking happens so often. The number of times I've seen the red X on the atlas in the entire time owning it is about the number of times the M3 loses its mind on a monthly basis.
The other interesting thing: I could probably write the algorithm for the adaptive cruise control on the Atlas. It's so predictable that I know exactly what it's going to do in reaction to traffic around me. If a car ahead of me slows down, I slow down at a constant rate. If the car speeds up, I know exactly how much it's going to speed up. Same with people changing lanes ahead of me, etc.
The M3 OTOH feels like a buggy machine learning model. I have no idea why it's at the current speed it's at. If I set it to 120KM/H and there's no car in front of me the chances of it being 120KM/H is about 30%. If a car pulls away from and my car should speed up there is no rhyme or reason to when and how quickly it speeds up.
All that being said, I'd still take the Tesla automated braking over nothing at this point. Reading the other posts, it sounds like VW is doing something right.
You're right. Poor choice of words. I seem to recall it's around 2025ish where most cards won't have mag stripes. Mag stripes only exist today because of the US. Everyone else uses the chip for either chip and pin or tap.

I haven't coded for a while, but here's a weird situation where print() worked better in some cases for me -- you know how people say "I have better learning retention when I take notes by hand"? I found that sometimes the act of writing the print() statement helped to focus my mind and think about what I was trying to debug. For example, what specific aspects of the data structure do I need to see and why? How do I want to frame the relationship between two or more variables? Stuff like that would sometimes lead to the discovery of the bug before I even completed the print() line.
Seeing the state is faster with a debugger is probably faster, but the process is an analog to explaining the situation to a rubber duck.

I had the chance to put these on a house I built. I ended up not doing it and using a more standard type. I slightly regret not having them in a few of my window use cases BUT, at least the ones I saw, felt very flimsy and rattled/slammed a lot.
Another challenge for this type of window: it's challenging to hook up a portable AC unit in an aesthetically. This is a factor if you don't have central air and need to retrofit cooling.

I have an hour commute each way if I want to go in and a dedicated 12x12 office bathed in natural light. There's no possible way a company office could come close to the productivity and comfort I have here, even on video calls.
Another chunk of the population lives in apartments not much bigger than my personal office and have a 10 minute walking commute into an office. If I were in that situation I'd maybe enjoy going into an office to do work more (but I probably would never choose to put myself into that specific living scenario).
There is likely everything in between those extremes. You also need to question intro/extro personalities, how much and what type of collaboration is part of the job, etc.
We used to live in a world where there was only one option: come into the office where the paper work lived. Now we have a choice. Let's take maximum advantage of that.
Sounds like you're close. This is what worked for me:
1) Know what your goals are. For me it was "don't be the largest size in a typical clothes store + don't be exhausted for the rest of the day after a morning out". I think you've got your goals outlined.
2) Commit the time, forever. Never make exceptions. There's no such thing as done. Plan to be working out (whatever that means for you) 3-5 times a week for the rest of your life.
3) Find a community to support you. I like a small gym with group classes + experienced trainers -- I want to be able to turn my brain off and use their expertise. Other people like to teach themselves. Others still find a community in outdoor activity groups (like hiking or cycling clubs). There's so many ways to stay active/train/etc. Do one that keeps you engaged. This may change over time. You know you've got it right when #2 makes sense.
4) Eat a quality diet -- you need appropriate fuel to support being active.
IMO, community is the most important one. Have a reason to show up at a gym at 6:00am or whatever your commitment is. Second is having trainers/resources to help you learn and improve. Don't do it on your own.

So you don't have a family and you want a house? Go find a sweet apartment or townhouse and let the equity build until you've got a family going. That may be a bit judge-y but come on, not everyone can/should live in a detached home.

I listen to a lot of podcasts and cram as much content into a small amount of time as possible. I've also been listening to podcasts since about 2006. It sounds absurd, but I have a "podcast workflow" that centers around Castro (highly recommend it).
I'm a long time (since Startup) listener of Gimlet podcasts. Slowly Gimlet podcasts are moving to Spotify exclusives. When that happens, I just stop listening. I'm 100% not interested in using Spotify. In a crowded market it just makes room for something else.
I have a gas powered boiler that heats my home and makes my hot water. Based on my gas bill, it’s incredibly efficient. But it still emits co2. Is there a “home scale” scrubber I can plug into its exhaust port? Can I do my own DAC?
Agreed. BUT if we price in the true cost of carbon at all levels it balances out. In a world we’re there is sufficient DAC you could charge the extractors and refiners and delivery companies and consumers. The price of a unit of gas goes way up at that point. Take the original commentor’s guess at $10/gallon - is the new cost $25 or more? I think we’d get to reduced consumption quickly.
Oh, that’s only net zero. In this fantasy we should also charge fossil fuel industries for past infractions too - maybe they need to pay an extra 20% for extra dac capacity.
At least the article doesn’t raise the “ev’s charged by coal plants” trope. All the ones mentioned seem to check out as spin IMO. Especially the examples I’m familiar with.
A common flaw I see with "Save our X" type campaigns is the lack of knowledge of the history of our places. We all tend to remember a place the way we first encountered it. And conversely we also tend to fetishize how people lived before us.
A short anecdote, I live in the PNW. There are plenty of places that are 3rd generation logging sites. I live in a neighborhood that since the 1800's was logged, homesteaded, reforested, logged again (possibly 2x?) and in the last 30-40 years has become an attractive semi-rural place to live. I've been in the area for about 20ish years, my partner her entire life. People who have recently come to the community and complain about new development don't understand the history of the place and that the homes they live in are new development to us. What they see as old growth forests are 50 year old sick and polluted monoculture tree stands that were abandoned by the forestry industry.
There is great depth to how humanity has impacted our planet and this article touches on some of it. It's easy to forget that humans bring change to places, even 5000+ years ago. I think your comment also points out some of the longer term impact humans have had. What state of planet earth are we trying to lock in? What are we trying to save? Humans are part of nature. How do we find balance to participating in the world?

The article talks about things like browser, ISP, etc and not so much browser history. Even so, this is the worst possible type of pattern matching. It’s easy for some to manipulate but really bakes in the worst bias.
People with the means can easily change their computer - You go from a budget pc running an old version of windows to a brand new Mac and your credit score goes up.
On the flip side your isp may indicate you live in a “bad neighborhood” and get penalized for it.
We have all got to hope this never gets implemented.

It’s one of the reasons I’m anti-pipeline. I’m generally against anything that makes it easier to get and distribute fossil fuels. Adding friction is an alternative way to internalize the cost of fossil fuels.
Maybe the article should have been written as "using technologies we have today scaled to the max, it'll take more than 700 years to get carbon under control" ? I mean, that's how I read it, but not everyone does.
On the flip side, this just goes to show you how much of a scam forest planting based carbon credits are. I've said it before, industrial scale carbon emission takes industrial scale solutions. (planting forests is generally good, but I don't think it balances out a coal plant or any other industry buying credits).
I respect the knowledge and capabilities of the First Nations. I believe their is truth to their methods based on experience.
That being said, I’m skeptical of the capability of their wisdom to combat industrial scale climate change and modern population density. Managing a forest isn’t going to compensate for the world’s industrial processes and millions of people living in a small space. Industrial scale problems require industrial scale solutions.
I've got to disagree with you. I've got a Tesla. Maintenance costs going into 2 years have been tire rotations. I guess I'll see in years 3-5, but I have a VW of about the same vintage and it's required coolant system repairs (thankfully under warranty), oil and other fluid changes, brakes are coming up. I don't really expect to see anything like that in the Tesla unless there is suspension wear/tear and then eventually things like the power windows, etc.
Interesting that other car manufacturers are requiring maintenance of their electric cars. I haven't hear that before. Sounds like legacy businesses maintaining their legacy business models.

As an electric car owner, the thought of paying for batteries and oil changes sounds terrible. I looked into the hybrid jeep to replace my aging one, but I know how much the maintenance on my gas beast is. I'll pay a premium to add a electic drive train and still have to take it back to the dealership every several months. Awful. I'll just wait for the fully electric version.
My experience with hybrids and long trips is that you're stopping more frequently for gas. They've got small gas tanks and small batteries. Both of which are burned through quickly when you're on a freeway and not touching the brake pedal.
I had a conspiracy theory level explanation for why Toyota is dragging their feet on EVs -- they need to have the inherit unreliability of ICE cars in order to make selling highly reliable Toyotas viable. Stay with me on this one.
Toyota vehicles are already highly reliable. If you take Toyota level quality and apply it to already simplified EV cars the average lifespan of their cars would go from 15 years to 30 years (guestimates) since there's 1/100th of the moving parts (or less?) in an EV. You'd sell fewer cars and your parts division would sell fewer replacement parts. You can't be profitable on wiper fluid and tires.
Toyota execs saw the end of their business if they ever adopted EVs so they need to ensure future vehicles were powered by explosions -- you still gotta have an entire ICE powertrain in a hybrid. They knew hydrogen was a dead end, but by the time everyone else figured it out it would be 30 years later.
I own the 400km range model 3. I can tell you that you’re comparing apples and oranges.
Over the course of the 50 weeks of a year that I don’t take it on long trips I spend 0 seconds waiting for a charge. I plug it in at night and it’s always full in the morning. A typical errand running day for me is 200+ km and I have more than enough range for that.
The one or two times I take it on a road trip I usually time it with pee breaks and filling my self with coffee.
Net/net I spend less time over all waiting to refuel my car.
Yes, of course this depends on me having a place to plug it in at night.
Anec-data: I’m in my 40s and live in the Vancouver area. The first time in my life that I ever experienced a smoked in summer was about 5 years ago.
Actual data: the link you posted shows a decrease in fires overall, but the size and damage of them increasing. I guess when the fires are so big and start merging your overall count goes down.
