Ribbon | New York, NY | Full Time | ONSITE

Ribbon levels the playing field in housing. We help home buyers compete with investors and all-cash offers and win their dream home. We do this by enabling everyday home buyers and realtors with the technology, data science, and capital that only the largest investors have access to.

We're well funded by Bain Capital Ventures, Greylock, NFX (Pete Flint Trulia founder).

Join a world-class product & eng team--last week alone, we had 2 ex-YC founders (1 successfully sold his co, the other was an ex-Tesla autopilot eng) and an Airbnb product engineer join us. Even more importantly, work on a meaningful mission where we change lives by helping people achieve homeownership.

We're hiring across a ton of roles including:

* iOS engineer (Swift)

* Full-stack product engineer (React, Django, Python, Google Cloud)

* Product Designer (We use Figma but other tools are cool too :)

Achieve | Founding Product & Frontend Engineer | New York City | Onsite

We an early stage startup making homeownership more achievable in the US, starting with leveling the playing field between the average homebuyer who needs a mortgage and wealthy individuals and investors who buy homes with all-cash. We’re doing this with a unique product that combines technology, finance and real estate operations.

We are looking for a founding product & frontend engineer to join our team. You’ll be a great fit if you love to craft product as well as engineering, bring strong frontend skills to the table, and care about working on a meaningful mission. We use Python + React on GCP but believe the best engineers can learn a new stack extremely quickly.

We’re a team of ex-Twitter, Lending Club, Managed by Q folks (current at 6 people) with real estate, machine learning, and consumer apps experience. We’re well funded by founders of Trulia/Zillow, and investors of Coinbase, Redfin, Blend, and separately, have raised enough initial real estate capital to purchase many, many homes for people.

Ping me (co-founder/CTO) wei at achieveliving.com if you’re interested.

TellApart - Burlingame, CA (between SF and Palo Alto)

TellApart is hiring: Dev ops engineers, Hadoop/data-pipeline engineers, Data product engineers (personalization products)

TellApart is a ~50 person (25+ engineers) startup (http://www.tellapart.com/) that works on real time personalization for retailers. Here are some specific things we're working on that folks might find interesting:

- Rearchitecting our data system to use the lambda architecture (http://www.manning.com/marz/) so we can build better personalization products on top of retailers' customer data.

- Building and improving machine learning models to predict user's behavior and what users want based on a ton of datapoints we collect for hundreds of millions of users.

{my_username[-3:]}@tellapart.com if you'd like to find out more

This is likely to get traction because generally:

- people have already signed up with Facebook

- people don't trust app developers with their FB data, and don't trust app devs not to post crap to their timelines

- people hate signing up for another service again with email and password (you have to give out your email, you have to create/reuse and remember a password)

The more open question is if it will cannibalize FB logins or get incremental people to sign up with FB (people want to do this anonymously but didn't have the option and gave up).

Technology as an industry is different from verticals such as cars, books, etc. This quote by Mark Andreessen in an interview with Charlie rose sums it up well:

"The core idea we have, the core theory we have, is that the fundamental output of a technology company is innovation and that's very different than a lot of businesses, right? The fundamental output of a car company is cars. Or the fundamental output of a bank is loans. The fundamental output of a tech company is innovation, so, the value of what you've actually built so far, and are shipping today is a small percentage of the value of what you're going to ship in the future if you're good at innovation." Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/marc-andreessen-on-charlie-ro...

If you believe that Silicon Valley is good at innovation, and not just software, or hardware, or social networks, then by definition, it will continue to be the hotbed of economic activity as specific verticals die out or get disrupted.

Growth matters because Quora raised a ton of venture capital and needs to eventually generate revenue to justify the high valuation, and there's a limit on revenue/user they expect to generate. Simplified version of web apps' revenue calculation:

Total revenue = revenue per user * no. of users

There's an upper bound on how much each user generates in revenue (either through ads, subscriptions), e.g. imagine paying > $200/yr to use Quora, unlikely that more than 100,000 people are willing to do that. So the fastest way to grow is through having more users. On top of pure revenue/user number, there's the network effects of having more users, as well as becoming a key part of cultural fabric e.g. most celebrities have Twitter accounts now.

If you're joining a startup or a company where you're offered equity as part of your compensation package, spend some time to understand what it means. You don't have to be an expert at it, but a couple of hours of learning here could go a long way, plus that knowledge is likely to be useful again.

There's a pretty good write up at http://infochachkie.com/options/

Compensation is not everything, and for most startups the expected value of your options == $0, but you should still understand what you're getting or giving up so you can make a sound decision.

It creates a lot of unnecessary tension between management and employees if employees can't just assume that they'll be rewarded for outstanding results and don't have to ask for it. If there's a tacit agreement that if you do great work you'll get a raise with a quarterly or semi-annual review process, employees don't have to get distracted by thinking about when they should ask for a raise or whether they need to get a competing offer to get leverage to ask for a higher raise.

Management might have better things to do, but if this creates an atmosphere where employees feel under-appreciated, they'll leave, and this churn can really hurt the company, which makes it a huge problem for management that could have been avoided by rewarding high performing employees earlier.

Timing your startup 16 years ago

Agree that there's luck involved but "waiting" can involve building a product and keeping your burn rate low while waiting for market conditions to be right. "If you are betting on emerging trends it is better to keep your burn low and runway long."

That way when the market's ready, you're in a great position since you've already spent time creating and refining your product, as opposed to someone who waited to start only when they saw the correct market conditions.

"What are you working on" was the standard conversation starter at the Startup School mixers. It's amazing how there are so many makers; makes me feel like the world's being improved every second.

Look for potential cofounders. Make friends with people who have similar interests as you (hacking, startups) and whom you get along with really well. Building trust and learning what people are really like takes time and being friends for a longer time gives you the chance to do that.
