There's a reason the turnover rate at all of his companies is very high. Not exactly the easiest or nicest guy to work for.

WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Two U.S. lawmakers who chair subcommittees overseeing auto safety asked the federal auto safety regulator for a briefing on its probes into crashes involving Tesla Inc (TSLA.O)electric vehicles using Autopilot and advanced driver assistance systems, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

U.S. Senator Gary Peters and Representative Jan Schakowsky, both Democrats, said in the letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) they were concerned that "federal investigations and recent reporting have uncovered troubling safety issues" at Tesla.

The lawmakers asked "given the mounting number of fatalities involving Tesla vehicles crashing into tractor trailers ... has NHTSA considered opening a defect investigation into this issue?"

The letter added "does NHTSA strike a balance between investigative thoroughness and addressing urgent, emerging risks to motor vehicle safety?" and if the agency has enough resources to properly investigate advanced driver assistance systems.

Tesla did not immediately comment.

Since 2016, NHTSA has opened 38 special investigations of crashes involving Tesla vehicles and where advanced driver assistance systems such as Autopilot were suspected of being used. A total of 19 crash deaths have been reported in those Tesla-related investigations.

Last month, NHTSA said it opened a special investigation into the crash of a 2020 Tesla Model 3 vehicle that killed a motorcyclist in Utah.

In June, NHTSA upgraded its defect investigation into 830,000 Tesla vehicles with Autopilot involving crashes into parked emergency vehicles, a required step before it could seek a recall.

Of course. The board has a fiduciary duty and in this environment, getting the company to be sold to Musk for anywhere near the agreed upon $44 billion valuation is a win.

Plus, after seeing the lawsuit filed yesterday, I think they really want Musk to have consequences for his actions. He has gotten away with making a mockery of the financial markets (remember funding secured?) for way too long. Set a precedent, make him pay!

I am not an out and out billionaire hater, but there are many that have legit impacted peoples' lives in a positive way or have provided jobs in the millions. Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta, Tesla, Reliance, etc. The amount of wealth they have might not be justified, but comparing them to this crooked list of billionaires is doing disservice to the products that they have put out in society.

But I just can't empathize with the loss of billions of the crypto billionaires, all of them seem to be founders of trading apps. The whole space operates like an MLM. Get in early, shill relentlessly and just turn the other way to the numerous scams in the space.

It's been over 12 years and the space is still trying to find an answer to a problem that either does not exist or is niche. For Bitcoin:

I know that the billionaire class is hated by most and most don't believe in the concept of "good billionaires".

All they have done is shill relentlessly a space that's so unregulated and resembles the Wild Wild West. None of their "products" actually made peoples' lives better. Endless scams, greed, mania and even fraud on these platforms (Binance, FTX, Coinbase, etc). They go down for maintenance whenever they want, list tokens that are outright scams and no oversight, they play fast and loose with the rules and even indulge in insider trading and many strategies to keep the price up.

If all of these companies go bust, the only loss will be to the people invested in it. You can still go about your daily lives with zero impact. They serve no use to 99.99% of the people on this planet.

Crypto bros will try to do whatever mental gymnastics they can to justify their investment, probably because they are all in. But I can't wait for most of these coins to implode for good as they serve no use to society. Comparable to cigarettes (zero health benefits) than wine (harmful in large amounts, has health benefits in moderation).

If someone is offering you a yield of more than 18% APY, then you are the yield to the next guy!

Log4J 1.x was deemed safe because it does not offer the lookup mechanism that Log4J2 v2.x does. It always remains a String, no matter what, unlike v2.x where you can load serialized objects via lookups.

As they should, from all agencies involved. It is absolutely horrifying to see Tesla do this open beta test on public roads when no other non-Tesla entities (other cars, pedestrians, motorcyclists, bicyclists, etc) consented to being a part of a reckless experiment.

Moreover, Tesla influencers on social media tend to cherry pick and show only the nicer parts of their FSD Beta drives where no incidents and disengagements occur. Whereas you will often see in the comments some Beta users disagreeing and often showing the scary bits. And of course the pattern of Tesla influencers acting like an echo chamber absolutely disagreeing with anything critical of Tesla, jumping to Musk's defense at every turn because..."My mission!". Elon Musk has a history of overestimating Tesla's capabilities when it comes to autonomy. And also flouting regulations to reach the end goal. He wants to make people believe in the illusion that Tesla are in some unsurmountable lead when it comes to autonomy but they are actually playing catchup and are dead last because of the approach they took.

But people argue, "Oh, but they are getting better and eventually will iron out all the edge cases!". This is not a matter of just making some settings change and things magically fix themselves. These are safety critical systems and not considering edge cases while advertising the feature as "Full Self-Driving" can lead to fatalities. The edge cases don't seem to be finite and no amount of "Dojo will solve this!", "The system is learning more and more and will reach there!" will solve the problem with their approach. At some point, he will have to eat humble pie and incorporate more sensors to increase safety. But with the ongoing chip shortage and the fact that they have to sell as many cars as possible lest the stock promotion crumbles makes it an even harder task.

NASA did add docking capability to JWST for future servicing:

That article is from 2007 but it still had the docking ring as of 2013. Can't find any recent ones that confirm if it will still have the docking ring at launch.

But I don't think we have the capability as of now to actually service it in case something goes wrong. But given how technology is advancing, maybe we can when JWST reaches EOL in 10 years.

Yes, JWST will send back pictures. But since JWST operates in infrared as compared to Hubble (mostly optical and ultraviolet wavelengths), the pictures would look different.

Unfortunately, we cannot, or will not be able to see the Big Bang. The simple reason is, it's just beyond our reach.

For the first few hundred thousand years, the universe was opaque.

We might be able to see a bit closer to the events after the Big Bang with a more powerful telescope in the future, but I don't think we can ever be able to actually "see" the Big Bang.

The whole Hubble mirror fiasco was fascinating. The before and after images of the galaxy M100 in the following link outlines the extent of the error:

One may assume that maybe the error was simply too big and that's why the aberration. Here's the root cause and the magnitude of the error would be dismissed as nothing by most people on this planet but ultimately turned out to be huge!

"Ultimately the problem was traced to miscalibrated equipment during the mirror's manufacture. The result was a mirror with an aberration one-50th the thickness of a human hair, in the grinding of the mirror."

The observatory has around 7000 moving parts with complex structures for the primary and secondary mirrors and more importantly, the sunshield that would be used to keep the observatory instruments at a specific low temperature. It will take roughly 30 days for Webb to reach the start of its orbit at L2.

At the end of 30 days, the telescope should have stabilized itself in an orbit around L2. But I would assume it takes that many days for deployment and unfolding everything because of the sheer number of parts and motions involved coupled with things like getting to L2, stabilizing orbit, temperature stability and all the checks for the instruments on board along with the mirror deployment (since it's not one big sheet of mirror).

To fathom how complex the sunshield deployment is (and that's just a part of the whole sequence), from the link above:

Each one must be unrolled, extended to its full size, tightened, and spaced out vertically for the sunshield to do its job. It’ll take the better part of two days to complete the sunshield deployment."

Around 1:47 you can see the number of people involved. 3 space agencies (ESA, NASA, CSA), over 3000 engineers and technicians and 100 scientists worldwide.

The deployment sequence that takes approx 30 days is terrifying but also probably one of the most complex things we would ever achieve if successful.

If Tether collapses, so does USDT. If exchanges have majority of their volume in USDT pairs, then the market liquidity dries up and the whole thing collapse. Remember that those coins need to be cashed out for actual USD. But if that USD does not actually exist, what will you sell into?

It's even worse than that. Tether fired that auditor (Friedman LLC) because they were looking into it in a bit more detail.

From the very same article: "Given the excruciatingly detailed procedures Friedman was undertaking for the relatively simple balance sheet of Tether, it became clear that an audit would be unattainable in a reasonable time frame."

Even Friedman LLP says in the internal memo “Do not rely on this report”.

It's been almost 4 years since that and no independent firm has ever audited Tether.
