If you want to do some non-eugenics, fascist-free AI coding, try Zed with GitHub Copilot. I’ve been using it this week with better results than I ever had with Cursor. There’s even a low token “MAI-Code-1-Flash” model which has been giving me better results than any Composer model I used to use and the tokens used seem to be way less.

I asked it today to fix a non-simple bug and MAI fixed it in one shot with less than 70k tokens (Cursor would have used probably half a million tokens based on my previous usage). Orgs need to start getting more visibility into why Cursor burns so many tokens.

Protecting the panel from the freak large hail storm from inside the track also seems a lot harder than having it in a field with angle adjusting mounts/software.

I’ve sadly had the same thoughts lately to cash out my 401k and say farewell to software development. I’m hanging in for a little longer, I think the AI/greed fever breaks sometime soon (months not years).

Not sure what “tells” you’re talking about. They have a “Made with Human Intelligence” badge at bottom of the post. Are you calling them liars? If so, what do you have to gain by trying to discredit them? Are you heavily invested in AI, or is there something else motivating you?

The overall message from the post is good, and I find the attacks on it in these comments highly unusual.

The GOP cut a measly $60 million per year for scientific monitoring instruments in the ocean, yet are increasing spending by hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars on things like military spending, White House security, and deporting good people they call “illegals”.

They haven’t cut the national debt because they cut taxes on the rich. Taxing the rich could pay for all the science and gradually pay down the debt. But it’s in the GOP interest to cut science to dumb down the population. Climate change is “fake” they say, meanwhile Fox acquired Roku (100+ million households), Paramount (MAGA) acquiring Warner Brothers, CBS, CNN, etc. Oligarchs taking over TikTok and their disinformation machine strengthens.

So Google AI will now be running partly on xAI data centers which run primarily on natural gas burned on site next to poor neighborhoods in Tennessee and Mississippi causing massive air pollution to these families and children. Is anyone else disgusted by this? I’m imagining all the people there developing lung and other issues because of this. Greed and power on full display over doing the right thing.

I’ll be switching off the Gemini model at work (Composer’s been off since their xAI deal). This is the final straw for me to move completely off Google services.

There are solar panel manufacturers outside of China that have no dependence on Chinese inputs such as polysilicon, wafers, and ingots. Two that come to mind are First Solar (US) and Toyo Solar (Japan). I’m sure there are others. Europe can buy from them while scaling local manufacturing.

While I agree with the sentiment, the groups who support dictators (oligarchs, religious extremists) would decide to also use violence. So both dictators and the leaders on the side of the people would be murdered and society would be destabilized.

My theory is consistent repetition of messaging (Cialdini principles). The people aren’t stupid, they’ve been gradually brainwashed over years by propaganda like Fox News and “conservative” talk shows, or they have family/friends that repeat that messaging. It is at the point of groupthink where they all now openly celebrate bigots and extremists.

They probably don’t understand or care why tuna and others parts of our food chain are contaminated by mercury.

Maybe they just want to join a team and beat up on the other team. The fossil-funded GOP tells them each liberal position is evil, so the MAGAs reflexively go against it all, even if it means mutual destruction.

When I was a kid, it was common knowledge (IIRC) that you couldn’t trust lawyers or politicians. It’s crazy to me how people nowadays are putting so much trust in politicians.

I’m an American. I saw it on 60 Minutes last night. Any reason why you prefer the strictly literal interpretation? The difference between a personal insult and a criticism of something someone has done seems pretty clear cut to me. We could use more constructive discourse especially in the US.

Trolls get traced and fined in Germany. It ought to be done everywhere. The 1st Amendment is taken too literally in the U.S.. Insults, abuse, and blatant lies have no place in public discourse.

Amen. When I read the OP's post, I thought it could have been my manager. I am reserved, not outgoing, but I'm a team player. I prefer to take tasks, especially larger ones and bunker down exactly as you said.

I'm pretty useless in sprint refinements with asking questions in a group setting, but if I'm given a set of requirements or mockups, I'll knock it out of the park every time. Been doing it this way for almost decades now. I didn't snap quit when a previous employer started trying to get me more sociable but I was gone within a few months.

Correct, I value doing the right thing over money. By transacting in something like that, even if for a moment, I would be accomplice to a major environmental destroyer.

If I won a contest and the prize was the choice between 100 BTC and 1 small vial of "Thieves" essential oil, I'd take the Thieves. Why? Because it has value (excellent in my homemade mouthwash). Also I can't support something that vampires countries' worth of electricity.

I've had an electric lawn mower for about 10 years now and I can tell you that it has reduced my maintenance costs. For the ICE mower, I had to take it in every spring or every other spring to get it tuned up so it would start (from memory those bills were ~$75 each tune up).

Same with the ICE snowblower that I bought back when I was young and dumb seeing all my neighbors with one, so I bought one - what a maintenance nightmare. I use snow shovels now which are way better for the environment and my health.

Mosquitos are part of the food chain and a LOT of animals (reptiles, birds, spiders, bats, etc) depend on them. Eradication is an extreme solution with extreme consequences.

I can vouch for deadlifts. Had wrist tendonitis flare-ups first at age 29 while doing lots of coding for a newly launched product. I'm 43 now and haven't had a flare-up in over 6 years (been doing heavy coding since 28yo). I do deadlifts once heavy a week, sometimes will add in an extra light set during the week. If you're starting out with deadlifts, be sure to check out a program like Starting Strength and practice correct form before adding heavy weight.

Things like bench press and working with heavy dumbbells have probably helped too since the weight forces your hand, wrist, and arm muscles to strengthen. I have also used a hand-held grip squeeze device which has helped over the years when I had flare-ups.

This is way slicker than what you could build using jquery-ui and available plugins unless you are rockstar with the js and have an excellent design person. For instance, the best time-picker plugin I've been able to find for jquery-ui is nice but isn't perfectly cross-browser and not as pretty: http://labs.perifer.se/timedatepicker/

Now look at the Kendo time picker. Design and usability are crucial to a successful product, so I'd say this looks like a smart investment, although I'd have to tinker with it more before buying.

I've been a stay-at-home dad for about 5 years now and can relate. My oldest son (14 months at the time) was always getting sick at his daycare and he twice got so sick he ended up in the ER. After that we decided one of us was staying home. Best decision we ever made. I know later in life I will look back at these years as the "glory years" because of all the memories and time spent together.

When I'm not on daddy duty I develop and support two web apps on the side. The only real work I've been able to consistently get in is during nap time (usually 2 hours per day after lunch), a 6-hour chunk on an odd Saturday or Sunday, and at night when they are sleeping. I can also fire off an email here and there throughout the day, but for the most part the "business" comes second to family responsiblities. When I'm with the kids I try not to let the business take up too many brain cycles so I can be fully "present".

Great article, but it might be more complete with a mention of the rising acidity of the oceans and how as the ph drops, many of the shelled animals at the bottom of the ocean food chain who depend on their shells for protection will not be able to form shells (the acidity eats away at the calcium carbonate) making a whole category of the food chain susceptible to extinction.

I appreciate the optimism in this article that humans are "on the right path", but the bottom line is humans have already caused a major disruption to the biosphere via carbon emissions, and the carbon emissions are still increasing which will have an effect of ocean life, thus humans.

I'd like to see more thought going into "helping people live better lives while living in balance with nature", rather than "We can expand the human species to 20 billion - let's do it!"

Given two image filenames: "pogo-sticks.png" and "ic.HASH.x,pogo-sticks,p.png", I'm willing to bet the former will rank higher and lead to more pogo stick traffic and sales because of the straightforward filename.

Anything that makes it harder for Google to understand your site is a losing business proposition.

I'd rather use PageSpeed for Firefox (optimize in dev, set the appropriate filenames, then deploy to production) to avoid any possible ranking penalties caused by this filter in production.

It looks like the 'Optimize Images' filter rewrites a different file name for the optimized image:

If you get significant search traffic from Google or Bing Image Search you'll probably want to disable this filter.

It would be a pain to pull a smartphone out before each meal to snap a picture. To put some UX polish on this idea, it should be an embedded appliance fitted inside the stomach or other suitable organ. I'm not a doctor, but installing a device that "reads all input" would be more accurate, user-friendly, and not require food photography 3-6 times a day.
