For the case of Polynesia (including Hawaii), they are considered to be Austronesian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austronesian_peoples

It is widely believed that they are related to (and originated from) the aboriginal peoples of Taiwan, which is distinct from Chinese civilization in both genetics, culture and agriculture. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polynesia#Origins_and_expansio...

When the Polynesians arrived by boat in New Zealand (Maori), Hawaii, Easter Island and other islands in the South Pacific prior to AD 1300, they were the first settlers there. Also, their expansion is completely unrelated to "Chinese expansion".

Note that in Taiwan, most companies offer a year-end bonus (at Chinese new year) of several months of salary. At the minimum this is 1 or 2 months, but depending on individual or company performance, it can go as high as 4 months (and in extreme cases, even more!). Hence the monthly salaries need to be multiplied by 14x or 16x or more, rather than 12x to get an annual salary.

I tried the Touch Bar at the Apple Store, and after tapping on it for various items, I then found myself tapping on the lower part of the screen as well, which of course doesn't work. It just left me feeling that the Touch Bar is a clunky halfway solution, and that having full touchscreens (like on the new Windows machines) is more natural and intuitive.

Yes, I got a bad feeling about the RISE conference (run by the same people who run WebSummit). There was no pricing on their web page, and then some sales person called to make an offer of a startup booth at a very high price (even after discount). I can understand that running conferences can be expensive, but somehow it felt like a scam.

Regarding college students, I think this is a matter of becoming more responsible in his advice, now that he's become so prominent.

Actually this is what happened to us... our AWS credentials had accidentally been put into Github for a hackathon project several months ago.

Coincidentally, the incident also occurred around the same time (April 1-2). We were hit with $13,000 worth of EC2 usage before we shut them down and changed our AWS key... We reported to Amazon, and they are working on a refund.

I believe the talks will be posted online. You can also find previous year's talks online on youtube.

I don't know about Startup School by itself... but in general, I think it's worth it to visit the bay area (perhaps for several weeks) to network and understand the place.

Just to provide a counter example to balance your assessment of VCs: Our lead investor has a Ph.D. in EE from Stanford. Our secondary investor has an engineering degree from MIT and is a serial entrepreneur. They have been very helpful in terms of advice and support.
