FLW almost always gets very generous interpretations of his intentions. I've been to 5 of his houses (including this one) and I've not heard anything negative about him on the tours. I say this as someone who likes his houses a lot (and considers themselves as someone who's gotten over the "FLW is overrated" hump).

The traditions are present in (probably) every European country. I think it's a combination of:

* One public broadcasting channel 40-50 years ago

* Someone decided to play a movie in the holiday period when most people sat around a TV

Norway has Tre nøtter til Askepott, Germany has Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel (they are the same Czech movie).

There are templates for deploying NixOS but almost all that I've encountered are heavily opinionated and thus only kinda work for specific people (usually the ones that designed them). Then when you want to customize them it's almost always easier to start from scratch.

I wonder how common this set-up is, but it's what I settled on as well (my flake contains 8 other NixOS hosts with common home-manager config).

Sometimes I wish I could control more things using nix-darwin but then I remember I like mostly defaults on System Settings.

if you play any competitive games that come with anti-cheat features, then you won't be able to join in the fun.

I'd say it's a majority of games that won't work if they require anti-cheat, but some will.

Could you publicly shame the distro that had that issue? Pretty sure it should be the default (on NixOS at least it is).

Honestly I think kitchens have way less stuff than a lab like this and following Alton Brown's advice of avoiding "unitaskers" will basically guarantee you don't get overwhelmed.

Why I love NixOS 4 months ago

I agree with the many levels of abstraction, but at the same time, directly managing systemd units is also so much easier with Nix then any other distro I've tried.

In isolation, nobody _wants_ their vehicle to spew black smoke.

Honestly, when I was 12 years old and my dad floored the TDi in our Land Rover (with the diesel particulate filter deleted), it felt satisfying in a way, like the machine is allowed to be its most efficient self.

Now that I'm adult, I know that it's marginal gains for the car and terrible for the environment, but there are people that have the thinking capability of a 12 year old driving these trucks. I don't think all of them do it because of spite (though I'm sure most do).
