This is something that hit me when I found out how to translate between decimal and binary. If an A on a screen can be a grid of numbers, and those numbers can be reduced to a series of 1s and 0s and stored in a bunch of fancy wires, then who knows what else it could be translated to or from. Look back far enough and the A is a series of photons clashing with orbiting subatomic particles at certain frequencies.

We use math based on the status of a sea of transistors to store it in other atoms with forces we're slowly discovering how to communicate about. It's all layers of finding new ways to describe something that was already there, spinning and bumping photons long before any of us had photon detectors in our heads or a chemical machine capable of deciding to call one pattern A and all the ways to translate it into sound waves.

One pattern is called "solid state drive," and we seem to have some say in what that pattern does from our frame of reference. Maybe it was always a solid state drive and we're the language the universe uses to describe its smaller parts.

I promise I'm not high, and probably not a Boltzmann brain. Though I'm not sure about the latter.

I switched to Joplin. It's completely seamless once I authenticate with the service I sync with and toggle the web clipper support in the desktop app. You can even clip those pages where the site blocks the Evernote and OneNote crawler since it all happens in your browser and on the local clip server.

Best of all, it's all in Markdown. There's a beta rich text editor, but the Markdown editor has a preview and a little button bar for common stuff like lists and formatting.

I'm coming around to management being a key part of Mozilla's problem. Firefox did legitimately find itself in a situation even the best turnaround artist would struggle with, but the situation calls for self-sacrifice at the top when there's so much money available to experiment with new lines of business. Nobody would complain about Pocket if it was just one of an intentional and visible program to find a viable course away from depending on Google.

Pocket is fine. Pocket randomly appearing on the gunwale of the sinking ship to tell you how great it is while the crew takes the life rafts, not so much.

I wish epub would catch on for more than books. An epub is just HTML and CSS in a zip file, and a large part of the world population has a device than can load it and present it cleanly.

This looks promising! I'll try it in five years, or when Google commits to keeping it alive long enough for it to have a chance.

While PDF is an open format on paper, in practice it's as proprietary as any ancient format. Supporting it in full is not trivial.

The cackling villain style of racism is mostly dying with Lee Atwater's generation. The human systems they installed perpetuate it with such subtlety that people can train an algorithm nearly 100% on white faces and not even realize it or think about why those are the most available faces to them. And when they realize it, it's so hard to fix.

Recommendation systems are built on k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithms. Subjective measure of quality is not a factor. A computer can see that two people like the same thing, but also that those two people like similar things each is not aware of, and bridge that awareness gap.
