From my understanding this is the next iteration of OpenX4 E-Paper Community SDK - an sdk made by some of the core contributors of CrossPoint that abstracts the hardware of eink devices.

Huge props to the devs, that haven't just embraced people forking their repo - but have actually put in a lot effort to make it easier for anyone that wants to develop on these platforms.

I like the idea a lot, any effort to spend more time with loved ones and off the phone is a noble pursuit. I think one thing that could add to this and help to habitualize it - would be ongoing statistics.

Something like..

- 3.8 days dedicated since you began in March

- 4.5 hours dedicated so far this week

- perhaps even being able to set up weekly goals could work

You are already using localstorage, so expanding on that sticks to your no account/analytics ethos.

It really bothers me that people refer to open weight models as being open source. They fundamentally aren't and are more akin to freeware than anything else.

As a (unfortunately) wordpress dev this seems to solve my single biggest painpoint with WP. Which isn't plugin security, but the overall plugin architecture.

WP treats plugins as content, literally in the same top level `wp-content` directory as uploaded images. This makes CI/CD among other things, a nightmare. But EmDash plugins are just TS modules, which has got to make things easier even if plugin configuration does end up in the db somewhere.

Your point of view assumes the best of people, which is naive. It may not force you to skip understanding, however it makes it much easier to than ever before.

People tend to take the path of least resistance, maybe not everyone, maybe not right away, but if you create opportunities to write poor code then people will take them - more than ever it becomes important to have strong CI, review and testing practices.

Edit: okay, maybe I am feeling a little pessimistic this morning :)

IMO not significantly. Prior to AI the bulk were tutorial based to-do apps or simple crud things anyway, its still easy to tell the difference between those and something more complex (where AI is less useful - or at least requires more skill to use successfully).

But I don't think the projects themselves really mattered all that much anyway - its the conversations you can have about them. Understanding the driving factors, whether it was solving a problem they have or just working on something they are passionate about, the challenges they overcame in the development process and the considerations/decisions they made along the way.

I did provide a warning of my nonsense. As you say though 10-30kb per image, in a 350+ page text book is already likely 7mb+ (assuming 1+ images pp). And that is absolute best case if the original images and optimization are working together. I would guess without any optimization for digital publication you could be starting from 100-200mb easily.

Talking out of my ass, but since epubs often target mobile devices (kindle, kobo, etc - with limited storage) - publishers probably find that their books do better if they tend to be smaller in size. And images take up far more diskspace than text does in a digital copy.

Then when a user needs to delete books from a device they will start with the largest files. The longer the book is on the device the more likely they are to engage with it, etc.

I see two possibilities (not mutually exclusive)

1. Art is art because it draws meaning from human existence - AI can't and can never exhibit this. Furthermore, pumping out thousands of "creations" a minute will never compare to a single work from a human.

2. People are dumb and will fawn over just about anything, the origin of a piece of art created today is less relevant than ever.

My most recent job was teaching/mentoring web development at a tertiary education provider. But now I'm looking to get more hands on again as I have missed coding. Nearly 10 years experience in the industry across a number of fields. I'm enthusiastic and always looking to learn. Let's grab a coffee!

What problem are you trying to solve here?

Code being open doesn't mean anything unless you can verify the code running on a machine at the time of voting (adding another layer of complexity). It's not just voting software though, the rest of the system needs to be verified too (both software and hardware).

Not sure why you compare blockchain here either, no developed countries I know of use blockchain in their monetary authority or try to obscure voting processes from the public.

Without knowing more the cheapest is free (at the cost of some time). Find a static site generator + template + host on netlify/github pages (use their subdomain, or fork our a few dollars for your own).

S3 and blockchain have very different use cases right?

Blockchain being for small quantities of data made immutable, used in a p2p manner with as many copies as there are peers.

S3 generally being purpose built for short term (relative to blockchain) storage and price.

Most methods are poor. PRs and commits can easily be gamed and generally the best developers are the ones with succinct small changes that deliver high value.

Two ways I have found to measure a developer's productivity are...

1. Based on the feedback of their peers. It helps to know the team members and the team's dynamics though.

2. Based on the $$$ the team bring in. Depending on how the team operate this could be far from their control though, a lot of decisions about the product will be out of the developer's hands.

Voxels/SpriteStacking/3dModelling is more of the how, they can all produce great looking 2d renderings.

I imagine the difference is more based around how the creator wants to create. If you are a 2d artist then jumping into 3d modelling can be a step learning curve, but voxel or sprite stacking are generally more forgiving.

I have been playing a lot of Mindustry lately, not just free, the game is open source too.

It is made by the guys at netlify.com and works really well if you are hosted with them.

I believe you can set it up to work with just about any host though as it just hooks up to a git repo and lets you make changes via a UI that you host wherever you have the rest of your site.

I played around with it a bit a few years ago, not affiliated.

Ink is a markup language rather than an engine, so it plays nice with version control and managing huge stories. It also lets you handle variables and do some pretty complex logic inside the scripts.

This also this means you can integrate it with different workflows, dialog authors can editor and focus on dialog in the inkle editor. Then push their changes into a game built in Unity.

Definitely more suited to big teams than Twine which is more targeted at solo indie devs.

I try to pair program with others any chance I get. It depends on the person, but usually I feel like we are being more productive than two individuals. Problems are solved faster, decisions are easier and we are also knowledge sharing and learning at the same time.

I do say it depends though, I think that if the skill level is too far apart it becomes more like a knowledge transfer or teaching, which feels way less productive (even if it is productive). I am also not advocating for this full time.

Some people hate it, I would love to hear some arguments against it.

I love examples like this, I hope you don't mind me tagging on my own.

Our team was doing in home interviews for a TV product. One of the customers subscribed to an expensive sports service and yet barely ever watched it.

When we probed it was because her two sons had left home in the last year and she knew they would come home when a game was on if she had the service. She said that she wish she knew when big/popular games would be coming up so she could invite them around and see them more often.

We trialed a fortnightly email newsletter for people that were subscribed but not very active. And saw a decent uptake in viewing almost immediately.

Looks like a very cool product and the price is more than reasonable. Some things that caught me up and maybe others are...

- What is a monitor? Is it a site? Or is a thing that can monitor multiple sites?

- Can I monitor multiple pages of the same site?

- I'm generally put off by time based trials, I get irrational fomo, maybe now isn't the best time to trial it, I can wait until when I am going to use it more (reading from work).
