That happened to me, but slightly different:

The 8th guy looked at my resume and, without talking to me, decided I'm under-qualified. He cancelled the call 1 hour before it was scheduled. Qualifying 7 rounds before that, and getting positive reviews from 7 of his peers wasn't enough to instill confidence over my resume.

Now I thank my lucky stars. Because that's a representation of the minuscule level of trust and team cohesion that these people have in their peers. Good riddance.

After 1 round of technical interview for a Manager position:

"Sorry, we're on a hiring freeze"

I pressed my contact to reach out to the guy who interviewed me. He said, 'Yeah. I like the guy. I gave a positive feedback' (I would've been his manager, actually).

So, what really happened?

I worked for Tapchief about 4 years ago and we had an army of recruiters just scouring through LinkedIn and Upwork who look for interesting profiles and try to convert them to this platform.

What I learnt there was that there exists a market for chrome extensions that will help you send template messages and even blanket responses to all and every person in a certain search criteria. You can scrape the pages from search results and even extract contact details like email etc, if present in your profile. Before chatGPT, the quality of these messages were abysmal. But they've gotten better recently.

I think Amazon hires smart enough engineers to build bots that can authenticate on your behalf and do this for you. Your job as a recruiter then becomes to only filter through the responses.

I would also like to take this opportunity and blame LinkedIn search for giving absurd results. Because this whole process is dependent on finding profiles on their platform.

I was about to say the same thing. My car (nowhere near as nice as a Merc) had the same issue. There would be oxide deposit on the contact points and the minuscule amount of rust and crack on the clamp would render it useless on a bumpy road randomly (1 in 10 times approx). It was scary the first few times but when I figured out the symptoms, it took me less than a minute to get it to start.

Try everything, don't get addicted to anything.

If you're counting the number of days since you last had it, you haven't truly moved on.

Return everything slightly better than you found it.

If you want something done properly, do it yourself.

- Most of these are about avoiding mental overhead. So that you have more brain capacity left for the people around you and the task at hand.

Why would you need a touch screen? An 8-segment display with 2 clicker buttons for looping through history, and a little bit of memory (like in a calculator) would be enough.

I have a 4 year old ThinkPad X1 extreme (1st gen) and I've been running Pop OS since almost day 1. I did run astray somewhere in the middle (Zorin, Manjaro, Windows) but found myself most comfortable with Pop.

Things just work: nvidia drivers, firmware updates, bluetooth, multiple screens, switching keyboards (bt to usb and vice versa), games (steam, heroic launcher), keyboard backlight (it's a pain on other distros for some reason), those little led indicators on fn buttons, the fn buttons!

The laptop overall is quieter (fans running slow), cooler, snappier - all with an amazing battery life.

This is compared to Windows - something that apparently Intel spent time testing this particular model of laptop with. (one of my relatives works there)

The tiling window manager is a productivity enhancer (feels better than i3wm to me, ymmv). I recently had the privilege of connecting to a 2K display using the thunderbolt port. This thing somehow felt faster (a couple 100ms, but it was noticeable). I have reached a point where Mac feels slow and Windows is just unusable. I'm having a great time with this OS.

Only 1 thing doesn't work: Intel WiFi display. But I guess that technology doesn't have enough market proliferation anyway. So. That.

Was laid off in August while working for a US-based company. My first layoff in a 10-year career. Still looking for a job. I'm broke. As in "can't pay my bills next month" broke. People are hiring but remote jobs are hard to find. (I have family responsibilities and cannot relocate)

I did find jobs. People who took 7 rounds of interviews then never released an offer letter. AFTER verbally confirming that I'd gotten the job. This has happened thrice now. I started with asking for $5000/mo (last drawn). But now, I'm willing to work for anything that pays the bills.

I'm in dire need and at my wit's end.

I've always heard (and it made sense to me) that to reduce latency of requests from across the globe, you might want to have read replicas or caches spread on global infrastructure. Then how is it that stack overflow is fast here when the db is on-prem, 7 seas across from me? Any amount of RAM should not account for the distance, right?

It's about baggage and addiction. If you can't remember the last time you had it, then you've truly mastered the 'letting go' part

Paraphrasing from memory. I read it in a book about Jack Welch and GE when I was a teenager. Internalising this has helped me stay calm and analytical during tough situations.

Yeah. This is a feature that caught my eye too. Blocking internet access to certain apps entirely. I do that actively on Android but it's been tough to do that on the laptop. Maybe Portmaster becomes the answer I want.

Reminds of the time I had an argument over the phone with a guy from a UPI app (PhonePe). There was a hack going around on dormant accounts. I had one account with them which was (maybe?) used only a few times.

I called customer care and asked if they could delete my account. They said, and I quote, "due to RBI regulations, we can't". Naturally, I asked "which regulation document? do you have a number?". The other person did not have an answer and escalated my call. They said they would get back to me and in the meantime, I read all the regulations there were. The regulations clearly stated that issuers shall give an option to close the account at any time. There was no such option in the app.

I pressed again to close the account to prevent misuse and/or fraud. The person on the other end of the call asked me (beratingly) to logout and delete the app. Because it was the same as deleting the account. I argued that it is not the same thing. To which his tone was more or less like, [my words, this is how it sounded] "you blithering idiot, you blasphemous imbecile, do you know how miniscule you are in the grand scheme of things. I am God here and you should bow down to my superiority and accept my solution"

I wonder if I should have sued.

You have to "Zoom Out" (Ctrl + -) on the page for testing on wider screens. For testing smaller screens, zoom in.

This might sound tangential, but I am at this exact stage in my life. I am in my early 30s and have signed up for the executive MBA program. I will be looking to start my term in Sept. Any tips/suggestions/warnings that you can share?

At a certain multinational company that Anon(a close friend) is currently employed at had this way of distributing bonuses when the pandemic hit.

Context: the company is chasing a $100mn y-o-y growth at this point.

- All employees in the US offices get a hefty bonus for the profits they contributed to

- All employees in the India office were to not receive bonuses/increments because we wanted to cut costs (not to forget, Indian salaries are 20% of their US counterparts)

- All employees in the US were to get reimbursements for stylish/modern/gaming chair while working from home($300 a piece)

- All employees in India had to get their $40 chair approved from the manager (request denied in most cases, "unnecessarily too costly", he said)

- No more bonuses for India offices for the next year or so because we spent all the money on the US employees and the managers bonuses

- Indian new hires are getting offered the salary that someone with 5 years exp is already working at in the company

<puts on tin-foil hat>: distribution of bonus/increments seem to have an upper limit. the less you distribute as a manager = the more you have for yourself and your favorite juniors

<anecdote>: ^^ one of the favorites from above actually quit the next day after getting the bonus. it's common to put in your papers right after the increment letter.
