Did you took a look at the zen browser? It's an arc clone based on Firefox https://zen-browser.app/
To be fair, It's more comparable to MP3 players in the 50 to 100 usd range. (See zishan, f.audio, hiby, shanling, fiio, xduoo) The difference is it is using open source hardware and software. Chinese MP3 players have little repairability, limited to no modding and a terrible OS. This tries to fix that. Still expensive in my opinion but I'm waiting to see if people make interesting things out of it.
Jpeg-XL is light enough to not require hardware support. Did you tried to transcode a PNG to avif? It's painful. Not the case with Jpeg XL. Meanwhile I urge you to read this article. Jpeg XL has way more features than avif.
Will it have an unlocked bootloader? sd card slot? Do you need an app to add book in the device? (sounds like it from the tech specs)
Is it sweat/water resistant?
Mastodon is hard to use because people using social media don't expect to read anything before starting to use a service. TikTok, Instagram, etc really succeeded in frying people's brain over their addictive patterns.
Just the idea of a protocol that can be interacted with over different clients and different instances is hard to grasp.
IMO, Mastodon has to find ways to be more accessible in the onboarding process without compromising on the decentralization feature.
But it's not easy to do that without text?
I could not make it work. Did you had to do anything special?
From what I learned, only apps that target Android 12and above could have this background update feature. I'm on Android 13 but none of the apps I use updated. I had to switch back to using the f-droid privileged extension.
Accessible Contrast Relative to Font Size and Weight APCA reports lightness contrast as an Lc value from Lc 0 to Lc 106 for dark text on a light background, and Lc 0 to Lc -108 for light text on a dark background (dark mode). The minus sign merely indicates negative contrast, which means light text on a dark background.
On iPhone you can use Orion browser, it has ublock origin and it's free. It's amazing.
On Android there is mull or kiwi.
We need an alternative from Bandcamp that is a co-op fediverse kind of system. I know there is people working on making alternatives like ninaprotocol.com but it's tainted by web3/crypto selling the songs as collectibles NFTs. Not even lossless.
Iirc, cjxl is smart enough to do it automatically.
cjxl input.jpg output.jxl
The cjxl --help and cjxl -v -v --help pages are very well done and you'll find the option to explicitly set the option on if you wish to do so.
From what I know the improvement is minor but noticable. There is less ghosting, a bit more contrast and it's more reactive to the touch. The newer models can even play videos half decently (i.e. you can somewhat understand what's going on on the screen)
I use this as a docker instance running on my old laptop. It just took a minute to set up and works really well. The sync is as good as apple notes or whatever commercial software there is.
Only issue is i could not sync with an old iphone running iOS 12.
Even if JPEG-XL could be considered only 'marginally' better than JPEG, and as good or even worse than avif/webP in some specific context, it is unique in the fact that it can also do lossless, HDR, extremely high res, complex color channels, generation loss protection, multi layers, advanced authoring features, etc... It's not a format only meant for the web but plenty of other use cases such as in science, medecine, art print, etc.
And not only that, it's reasonably fast to encode on consumer hardware.
JPEG XL has the ambition to supplant all the images formats of the next 20+years.
See also SARASA GOTHIC, a CJK programming font based on Iosevka and Source Han Sans.
It's not about the meaning, more about the vibe and how the vibe is delivered. Just read those tweets as you would read a collection of poems. While poetry more often try to give a feeling of beauty, dril tweets are mostly to make you feel funny or laugh.
I really like it, it's fresh and friendly. it has a narrow option to have that compact spacing like iosevka which is my favorite. I can't use regular width font anymore after being use to narrow width.
Not tech related, i just share my drawings. The blog is done with hugo and hosted on netlifly, i also use a cloudinary plugin for the images.
adding to this, how streaming made rap songs shorter: https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/considering-the-rise-of-the-s...
I don't remember exactly but back in the radio days, songs had to be a very specific length to be a pop single.
webP and avif are basically video codecs that can eventually render a frame as a static image and are good at masking low res artifacts.
On the other hand, JPEG XL is for static images only and is way better at rendering fine details. It has a bunch of specific features and optimizations. if you want to know more in details, check this post: https://cloudinary.com/blog/the-case-for-jpeg-xl
What will happen for people that have Ipad pro cables and accessories? Those are usb-c and don't have any mfi chip afaik.
Maybe iwctl would work for you?
I get various degrees of warning for reasons I don't know: "the developer cannot be identified" can be bypassed via right-click open but some app get a worse warning like "this app is malware" or "this app is damaged and cannot be opened". For those I need to de-quarantine them with a xattr command.
For example, try installing librewolf via homebrew.
Totally anecdotal but it seems to me Europeans are more likely to use old tech than other countries at similar income level. So I know this looks weird for some Asian and north Americans, but it makes total sense for the rest of us.
Phone are essentially a finished product nowadays. Apple think the same and shipped iphone 14 with the same CPU as their previous generation. There is also rumors of them skipping the next GPU upgrade for iphot15 because of mower demands than expected. My partner still use an iphone se (2016)
We're currently using a 12 years old iMac with upgraded ram and SSD for basic browsing. It's absolutely usable. The current generation of high end smartphones could easily last 10 years for basic usage.
Make the SoC upgradable next and we would have iphone SE that would last as long as cars.
The main things that keeps me on Android is the usb-c port and f-droid. I'm glad this is coming.
Active noise cancelling earphones.
It's actually not a gimmick at all and perfectly safe and healthy. Passive earphones that have strong isolation like the Etymotics are just not comfortable for me and the isolation doesn't work as well with bass which can be incredibly irritating in some situations.
I'm just annoyed at the disposable aspect of the object. Theses rarely last longer than a couple of years from what I understood.
Higher ppi help for rendering curved lines cleanly without jagged anti-aliasing.
It's a known fact that typefaces that have curved, humane shapes are more legible. That is why it is bad practice to use something like futura for long text.
I am assuming rounded corners in boxes follow that logic.
Since high res screen are becoming the norm, you could argue that border radius are becoming de facto the 'correct design' because it is a more friendly, inviting et legible shape.
A child named Alexa had to change their name because of the bullying.

It is indeed. Also I want to add that in a city like Paris, you have access to high quality public facilities like open acceas library study room, squares and parks with comfortable chairs so that you don't need to stay home for much more than fix a quick meal and sleep.
That said, it is a precarious lifestyle and not something people do by choice.
