I know DHH divides opinion here on HN, but this book is a real Gem (not to be confused with RubyGems).
This and "The Pragmatic Programmer" are my top two books, relating to Software Development and Running a small business.
Can't wait to see what features the new Paid (Enterprise) version will have over the Open Source (Community) version...
These guys deserve to make a good living from this product as its made a profound difference to the Ruby community which i think sometimes gets taken for granted.
I'm amazed at the number of different hacks people have employed to solve this, just goes to show its the simple things that make the difference.

Has open source changed? I remember when people didn't fork projects, rebadge them as there own and then promote them over the original.
Now don't get me wrong, I think its amazing that Twitter are opening up these enhancements to the community, but it feels like a kick in the teeth to the memcached folks to slap a twitter badge on it, why isn't this a collaboration that benefits the whole community? you know, like open source used to work.
I know at 34 I'm a dinosaur in this industry but I do try to keep up with the new way of doing things... This just feels wrong to me.
I really don't understand the negativity around here for this, is it really that hard to believe that somebody paid good money for a profitable business? Now clearly 27 Signals have moved slightly from the original flippa terms, they are not imposing that customers re-ender details which I imagine was a show stopper for any potential buyer.
The subtext to some of the comments here suggesting that its all made up, is really odd! Why would 37 Signals even need to waste ours or their time making this up? They run Basecamp!! they really don't need to impress us with selling a relatively small business! its completely beneath them!
Instead of poking holes in this story, we really should be celebrating it. Building a business of this size is not that hard, a few hundred customers and a solid model and by solid model i mean, Charging for your product is all it takes. If this doesn't serve as inspiration to us all then i don't know what will.
I'd love to see the socks right on the home page, with a better call to action "Buy Now for just $x"...
Been using the Beta releases for a while now and I'm hooked, Unity has matured in to a really well thought out and compelling desktop environment.
My absolute favorite feature is hitting the alt key (from any app) and being about to navigate the menus and options e.g. in FireFox Alt > Type "Edit" and i see all the options available - Very Slick and means i can use the keyboard to effectively navigate all apps now, Previous versions of unity didn't really lend themselves to this.
I'm assuming that you will wrap this all up in ruby objects and expose a cleaner syntax? As orta said the Objective-C syntax is currently cleaner.
From an engineering point of view i have to say that this is impressive, very keen to see what tools you come up with to aid the development process, a TextMate bundle to compile and deploy to the sim would be super sweet ;-)
My point is more general than that specific stack, the concept of one click deployment stacks which are built by Sys-Admins and have support is a big deal.
This is Huge! EC2 has made provisioning hardware and OS's stupid simple but building a rock solid stack is still beyond most people.
Now you can use supported production stacks, for instance https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B0078VKDDI/ref=brs_res... is a supported Rails production stack its secure and has an SLA... This is a big deal.
hang on! are you suggesting that FaceBook employees have access to a users data even if his privacy settings prohibit it?
