I worked with both Alex (stainless) and Jarred (bun) at Stripe, and they were both notable for their high energy and output. I did find it amusing that Anthropic picked both the Xtripes up and wonder how many Xtripes at at Anthropic hiring their ex-coworkers.

As a New Zealander who's had skin cancer, and lives under constant high UV rates because of the lack of an ozone above my country (and Australia, South America, South Africa), I'd really like it if Europeans continued to reduce/stop ozone harming emissions.

This was one of the most exhausting aspects of working for a US company, especially as an H1B. Simply: just don't say anything, it wasn't worth it.

I'm from cultures where we bluntly call a spade a spade and pride ourselves on disdain for hierarchy. There's far less fear in raising concerns generally to anyone, but it's quite possibly because of the far better employment laws.

As a kid I spent summers working in the schools IT department in order to save up to buy VB6 (with a staff discount). This was not cheap back in the day!

NZ is maybe a poor example, as we do not have capital gains taxes on houses (or most things), and do tax foreign investments (via a ~1.5% annual wealth tax, so house flipping is tax-free money)

100%. There are 2 NZ employment markets. Those working for NZ companies in the $100k region, and those working for US firms for the $200+k region.

I've had an annoying time explaining this to past US employers when they present median values for NZ salary fudge factors.

The first job I looked at stated they were hiring "anywhere across the US", so this doesn't look like a very well curated list.

I left the US when Covid struck. No way was I sitting around there during all of this.

I took a 50% pay cut to move back to my home country, while producing the same output (and value)... the company directly benefited from that.

Now, if my company forced me back into an office I'd say no. I'd be on the market only for a remote role, still at a steep discount on US engineers. Why wouldn't a smart company take that offer?

WFH is not going away, but I suspect the FAANG will move away from it and the startups will capture the opportunity.

The NZ sun is terrible. You feel the sun burning you as soon as you get outside. Burn time can be about 10 minutes on a sunny day, and maybe 20 on a cloudy day in summer.

In NZ we get about 4000 in-situ melanoma diagnosis a year. I was one of them a couple of years ago (at 37).

Yes! I've been having to double tap links on iOS Chrome, as you've described. I'm a frontend engineer so this had me puzzled. It's not like there's a zindex issue with something blocking it, as a double tap seems to often work.

Looking at the description on the website, it looks like this is going to be a non-starter for us projector users, sadly, as you have to point your camera at the screen within an inch or so from the surface. Hopefully there's some manual calibration option too.

I had this. The first attempt to fix was to ship a replacement rubber earpiece, which didn't work. Ultimately they replaced the entire earbud.

I just remade my personal site after a 6 year break.

It took me 4 hours to redo a static HTML and CSS mockup, learning a bunch of great new things about CSS Grid and Vars... then another week to convert that static into a Gatsby static-generator site.

It's sort of insane how over engineered we've gone on this stuff. HTML and CSS are pretty great tools for a blog. We can skip the React, GraphQL, etc.
