It's interesting how Facebook has such a keen eye to spot the next pivot and move their giant ship inch by inch methodically in the right direction. They did it with newsfeed for the main site, main site to mobile transition(albeit with the html5 fiasco thrown in for a year), carving out messenger(and pivoting it to another screen to show ads) and now pivoting Instagram to subsume Snapchat.

Kinda how Netflix vs HBO is a question of - how fast can Netflix become HBO before HBO becomes Netflix. Instagram is definitely trying their best to have part of its identity be Snapchat. What is Snapchat trying to become rapidly before Instagram subsumes Snapchat? The walls are closing in fast(like it happened with Twitter) and if they don't figure out the answer soon they will suffer the same fate.

There's likely a bunch of factors that go into it. Might even be a score that is updated based on your purchase, return history, length of having a prime membership, amount spent on amazon etc.

Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. Short(shorter than usualy for Google) term financial motives kill any far fetched ideas from ever having a chance. Wall Street demands up and to the right movement every 3 months. Companies like Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Apple try to have their own internal cadence of some goals in 3-5 years. Google had 10+ year projects but from the sounds of this article and what has been happening in the past year or so that leash is being shortened drastically. Sad day but I guess every company has to eventually grow up. Maybe another contender will emerge for long range innovation.

This sounds conceptually similar to how teaching CS or teaching programming to some one later in life focusses on algorithms data structures and other "inside baseball" concepts rather than asking them what is something you would like the computer to do for you or a real life application they would like to see in the world and show them the simplest path to getting a MVP of the thing they are interested in. Once they have that they will be more curious to build something else using their first experience as a base. Maybe a few months or a year or so later they would explore deeper concepts like learning data structures, algorithms and other optimizations

I have a similar situation. I had created an account just for a specific client to share files via google drive. Don't remember the password any more and can't access those files. No recourse.

The author isn't in an engineering role. The tools listed in the article seem more centered around collaboration between a project/product manager and engineers versus between an engineering team. Hence no mention of git/source control
