I use Regolith Desktop packages to run Sway with Gnome. It's basically i3/Sway + Gnome settings, and works really well. I get the benefit of a sane DE (Sway) and somewhat easier settings and defaults

My Firefox does this on Windows. I have no idea how many tabs I have open, but regularly the whole YouTube tab I have open freezes, especially if you try to watch one video, and then another, and the whole UI is delayed by many seconds. Even closing the tab will have the audio playing for several seconds in the background. It's not due to load or hardware as far as I can tell. The videos play just fine in Chrome or Edge. I still use Firefox as my daily browser (previously Chrome), but these issues are super annoying. I don't want to have to restart my browser or PC all the time. I don't know if it's some combination of extension/ad-blocking or YouTube doing stuff, but it's very annoying.

Unrelated to that, but on a Ubuntu laptop I have Firefox tabs regularly stop working entirely. They just won't load anything, and the only fix is to open a new tab and that loads fine most of the time. Other times I have to restart Firefox. I've tried searching for others experiencing this problem and even asked in Mozilla channels on Matrix, but even then I didn't come up with any answers. The laptop's hinge broke last year so I haven't used it since then, so likely never going to figure out what was going on.

That's a good tip, thanks! I have a older i7-6700K machine around here somewhere, that could work. But no ECC ram, and no idea if it draws any less power in the end. Some setup with just two drives mirrored would likely work, but feels a bit risky having no parity drive

The problem with those is that they are insanely expensive for what you get. Here locally the DS423+ (4-bay one) is like $614 USD + shipping without any disks, and has a Intel Celeron J4125 and 2GB ram. They are unfortunately ridiculously overpriced

I have a older Intel S2600CP dual Xeon board now, which still works fine, but is a huge SSI-EEB board and draws like 90W mostly idle.

I think most of my use-case could be covered by one or more mini pcs, since I mostly run stuff like Home Assistant and other small things in containers. But for storage I'm not sure what makes sense now. I went with zraid2 back then (in 2015) because I already had four of the 3TB disks, so purchasing two more was worth it for the cost and extra parity drive.

But now I'm not sure if ZFS is the right choice. I think now you can expand pools with more disks, in theory anyway, but I never tried it.

I don't know what options I should consider, and why. Unraid for example looks promising, since you can just keep adding disks.

Realistically most of what I have on the server is replaceable, I really only care about personal photos/videos/documents.

If I am replacing hardware to lower power consumption/electricity cost, spending lots of money to do so does not really make much sense. I would very much like to get 90W+ of heating power out of my home office though, it's noticeably cooler in the room if I turn off the server and other computer(s). Less spinning disks and less hardware would help with that part, but other than making the office cooler I don't think I would save that much money (initially anyway).

The disks I have are from 2015, so probably better to make a choice for hardware/disks now than having to emergency purchase one or more of them to replace failing ones.

What models are new enough to consider? Do any of these support ECC ram? And would you say mirrored ZFS is good enough for home use? Most of my storage is media for Plex or edited in Resolve and such. I have a 6x3TB zraid2 setup at the moment with aging disks (2015~), but looking to upgrade that. Not sure if I can go the route of just having 2x10TB or something instead, perhaps with a off-site backup to a identical system for the important stuff. Currently I rely on having the important bits copied several places, and just accepting I'll lose some data if everything catches fire here locally

What model did you get? I've been looking at various micros on eBay/local sites, but none that I find are actually available for reasonable prices shipped to me (Norway). Finding lots of machines around ~$220 USD, but then add in $50 shipping + VAT and it adds up

Because it's a tablet in a magnetic case keyboard thing it doesn't stand up on it's own. It needs a surface for the back of the case to be on for the screen to stay upright. A normal laptop has hinges, this is just a cloth hinge or something like that. So it's effectively useless in "laptop mode" in a couch, unless it's on a solid plate or book or something. It's really unfortunate because other then that it's still a great laptop. 4k screen with touch, just enough CPU and RAM for browsing, some coding/ssh terminals and more.

I bought a StarLite Mk 5 [1] to replace the Dell laptop, and regret it so far. Battery life isn't anywhere near promised and since I primarily use the laptop sitting on a couch it's useless because of the magnetic keyboard/being a tablet. It's my own fault for buying it, I should have cancelled the order, and I don't think I can return it even if it's basically brand new unused in the box it came in.

If anyone happens to have a XPS 13 9350/60 palm rest case that isn't broken, let me now! I was very happy with the laptop until last year when the whole metal case where the hinges attach broke. Looking on eBay for a replacement part just gives me lots and lots of listings of the same part broken in the same place, or they are ridiculously priced (like $250).

To make things more complicated, I have a Nordic layout and all the parts I can find are US/UK, so realistically I'd also need a new keyboard, front cover and everything else!

Maybe I should try to just design a case for this so I can use it as some sort of home server instead. Seems wasteful to just throw it away

Same bridge it was phantom braking when a friend had a Model X like 8 years ago, still not fixed even if probably thousands of Teslas drive there every day

I'm not motivated, but I am stubborn. I try to not wait for motivation, but rather go do something else, anything else for a little while.

This applies to anything really, be it work or chores at home or anything else I either really find boring or can't quite solve. If there is a problem I can't think of a solution for it must be split up more.

If it's something like doing the laundry or something you can just do a little bit here and there. Just 5 minutes of doing what needs to be done, even if it's a quick few dishes in or out of the dishwasher and a few clothes folded up. I don't need to be motivated to manage 5 minutes of doing something. Just 5 more minutes!

For some things though like going to the gym when I really don't want to, refer to the first sentence. I'm not motivated, but I am stubborn so I'm going anyway. :)

I'm a long time Plex user, and I have not received this email. Not sure if I should be worried or if the breach has just affected a subset of users. I use random unique passwords for everything anyway, as long as no credit card details were taken it shouldn't be a big deal hopefully. I was able to log into the site now and no message was displayed at all.

Edit: Not sure why I would be getting down-voted for this. Security breaches are a big deal, but if the only result of this for the users is that we need to change our passwords that's a fairly good outcome, no? :-) The biggest hurdle ahead for Plex is to figure out exactly what these attackers did, if they were directly targeted and for how long they were in their network. A lot of the times a incident is discovered it's discovered a long time after the first breach (based on my own personal experience)

Yeah! No idea why I still have a VPS at Digital Ocean compared to this. For a Basic / 4 GB / 2 vCPUs (aka shared cpu 4GB ram) instance I'm ending up at like $28.5 per month including VAT ($20 droplet + some backups). Looks like I could literally get 4x the RAM for the same cost on Hetzner!?

I use Voicemeeter Banana to control audio on Windows. Works great for exactly that scenario, where I want my voice comms to have a higher volume than games, and also nice when I have multiple inputs (microphones) and outputs

There is a extensive JSON API available here [1], which I'm assuming this Excel API will make use of. And we already have this functionality in Google Sheets, so it's not exactly something new. It will be good to see more use of the API though, and interesting to see if they maintain this in the years to come. Perhaps them making a Excel extension will cause them to spend some time fixing all the things that have been broken with the API for a long time [2].

I have only used ZoL myself, on Debian and Ubuntu. I really sorta need to buy new disks for this, but they are so expensive right now. I should probably just backup all the stuff I really care about and offload most of this to some sort of cloud storage/rented space somewhere. I don't know that these drives will fail (WD Red 3TB), but the 50k+ power on hours are starting to worry me a bit.

They have not seen a huge amount of reads/writes though, if we don't count the weekly scrub and weekly usage by just me.

I make my pools with the serial number /dev/disk/by-id/ names, like ata-WDC_WD30EFRX-68EUZN0_WD-XXXXXXXXXXX.

That is not going to change between different machines as far as I know, I might be wrong about this. I made some bad choices (in hindsight) when making this pool for my uses, but it's still going strong many years later. [1]

This current pool (which is now old, 50k+ power on hours on these disk) has survived a motherboard dying randomly and one or two SSD failures with the OS on.

Always just installed a OS on a new SSD and it's been picked up just fine.

[1] I went with RAID-Z2 for 6x3TB WD Reds where I probably should have made mirrored pools or something like it to gain more space? It's been a while since I looked at it. Can't really expand this pool or add more storage without replacing each disk one by one with something bigger.

A lot of us are bi-lingual. English is not my first language, so being able to use spell checking for my native language and English without things breaking is important to me.

I find that the hardest thing about logging what I eat is knowing what I eat, and what calories those things contain. Often I eat lunch at work where they serve a ton of different dishes, and I dont have the opportunity to weigh what I eat, and I have no idea what exactly they put in that said that day. If I try to err on the side of caution, I'll be super hungry because the number of calories I ate does not add up to the number logged. Unless I have the time to make all my food and measure it or only eat processed/pre-made food that is labeled it's hard to keep accurate track.

Do any of you feel the same way? I have used Myfitnesspal and similar before, but have never stuck with it. Before I have stayed reasonably fit because I usually ride mountain bikes a lot,but the past few years there has been less riding and I'm now +10kg my normal weight at least.
