I didn't interpret the article as just listing Mayer's faults.
It also says decline is inevitable for all big companies, and the process is accelerated in tech companies (like everything else in their lifecycle). Turnarounds are rare, and no choice of CEO would have made a difference for Yahoo.

There's no glory in jeopardizing your wellbeing. And it's hard enough to make money in any market, especially one as competitive as fantasy sports, where all the big players have massive audiences already built-in.
They moved many of their popular Java projects recently: guava, guice, closure tools, gson.
I have never understood why daily games are legal. The outcomes can be determined by random events like injuries or the weather. How is this not gambling?
For a site that is simply some text and comments, they have a staggering amount of downtime and timeouts.
At reddit's scale, it doesn't matter what they're serving. The challeneges of serving that many pageviews are significant.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the most obvious (and innocuous) motivation: to expose young developers to google's cloud platform so that they'll be comfortable with it when they become big-time CTOs in a few years.
The network effects for cloud services are nowhere near as strong as they were for operating systems (end users don't care which underlying platform is used) but there is an advantage to having more developers familiar with your service.
