I'm not sure I follow the criticism here. Is the issue that a paid product only supports Mac, or an open source project didn't build for multiple OSs?

If it's the first; I've seen tons of Mac only software due to the perception that it's a more lucrative platform. (Users are price tolerant for good products).

If it's the last; scratch your own itch. Since it's open source you can write the softer yourself. I'm not sure if this outlook is the diy zeitgeist I grew up in, or just being old. I'm curious if this is still a common belief.

I've recently heard there's the IMF has been looking at the effect of supply side effects on inflation. The best summary I can find is in this NY Fed post (https://libertystreeteconomics.newyorkfed.org/2022/08/how-mu...)

I've always found it interesting that econ discourse usually takes such a rigid view for the causes of phenomenon, if this were another quantitative discipline I imagine there'd be a softer position. Anywho, just chiming in to opine that the models for economics folks argue about is likely more nuanced than portrayed.

It's refreshing to see a company follow through on their promised use case. Especially since a lot of devices (home automation bridges, nas, media set tops, etc) are just purpose dedicated computers. I'd love for my next home server to be a laptop upgrade and 3d print away.

Did I miss where the model size is? One shot rankings is nice, but it sounds like they're trying to build a proprietary alternative to other models, rather than focusing on outright competitiveness.

I wonder at the applicability of performance metrics for specialized models. (This is to be a personal assistant ai, right?) I'd think that either; 1. All models perform the same natural language understanding functions, or 2. Context matters a ton. If it's 1, then there's no need for a specialized model. If it's 2 then the relevance of performance metrics diminishes.

This also assumes a level of collaboration and mentoring I've yet to see as routine for Jr engineers. Even in person jr's reach out trusted contacts via chat as opposed to in person. If you've see this signal it might be culturally specific, or during a particular era.

From my experience, the divestment in training and mentoring, stringent job requirements, and lack of job security through arbitrary performance metrics have done more to make folks feel isolated than proximity to bodies.

I was comparing the sound quality to Lenovo's, Thinkpads, and MacBooks. I find my framework sounds muddier and more distorted than all of them. I acknowledge that the Mac might be unfair since it's in a different price and quality range, the Lenovo quality seems doable though.

Are there any plans to enhance the sound quality in future iterations? The 80dB speaker upgrade makes it louder, but the sound quality is still lacking compared to other traditional machines.

I'm in the same boat. Though, I think about it differently; the fact that I can print a case and use the mobo as a headless server is a differentiator for me. I also don't know if it's possible to design an attractive functional chassis that doesn't need iterating.

That being said I'd like to see a recycling program, or some way to reduce the environmental impact from upgrades.

If you're looking for a more generally useful and powerful SBC, the space is taken by mini pcs ( Intel Nucs and their clones). AFAICT SBCs are a strange middle between microcontrollers (Arduinos, ESP32s, etc) and computers that seem to come out of the myriad of options from mobile chip sets; more generalizable than microcontrollers, not as extensible as a minipc.

Odroid seems to have the most powerful hardware in the SBC space currently, support varies by project.

I see these type of posts as a hybrid of the "life is more about work" and "make your work meaningful" arguments. I can see how this is a valuable strategy, but the use cases are pretty narrow. It presumes greater knowledge translates into greater salaries at a later date. imo, better advice would be "don't make your income your self worth" and/or "salary is just one aspect of compensation; knowledge, skills, networks, and opportunities are some other ones."

I think the bigger issue is that the value proposition for FB is dicey. The "social" business model seems to be a race to exploit the user base as thoroughly as possible, while using a basement of PhDs to keep the site sticky. Relatively normal by modern corporation standards, but the notion that they're working towards a more connected world that benefits their users is thoroughly debunked. This combined with brand reputations being tied to their target demographic's beliefs puts FB in a bad spot. I can see a future when they double down and play to their core strengths; deep data harvesting, and fine grained targeting. I'm not sure if that means they take over the data brokerage market, fire up the M&A engine, or pivot to Palantir's space. Either way, I don't know many folks who will be joining them.

Fundamentally I agree that it's not one argument causing the fracture, it's a cumulative process that exposes underlying incompatible beliefs. I think this article is getting at the speed with which people seem to adopt to their new viewpoints. There also seems to be a the lack of civility, and incoherent dismissal of reality seem to be new.

The best model I've seen is people are being radicalized with nonsensical viewpoints. With the new belief system comes toxic aggressive self assurance that dismisses others.

Ultimately I fear we're too far gone and the generations who survive this will have to pick up the pieces.

I can't put my finger on it, but the title is misleading. When I saw it I assumed attackers were tracking the target's Airtag as it moved through an environment, instead AirTags are being used as a GPS vehicle tracking device.

Exactly, I think this thread is focusing on the utility of an environment from a mature SDec POV. Personally having a cheap R710 allowed me to practice my sysadmin, networking, security and a host of other skills that directly translated to my (then) current and future roles. I think the perception of a virtualized environment being the same is false and diminishes the sys/network/security admin's knowledge set. It's is akin to saying that writing JS is the same as Java, coding is coding. I'll also say the number of times I've been in rooms of IT pros who don't understand underlying systems, OS, or networking is disturbingly high.

Lastly, even if it is frivolous I see tinkering with hardware as part of the hacking spirit. It's fun, I like it and it gives me something to grumble about with the grey beards.
