I wonder if anyone is legitimately concerned that mirrored downloads might contain malicious payloads?

This is why I quit being a TPM - at one point I just started making up bogus words and every PM (non-technical) with an MBA immediately jumped at the opportunity to use a cool new word. The day that did it for me, aside from the company failing to realize any pivot towards actual revenue was "well, at this point our best case outcome is to be revenue-neutral but ideally by Q4 with the current POC we'll be revenue-positive and able to reneg on prior action items". Just say, what we're doing right now isn't working and we're not making money...

Tbh, I kind of hated being a TPM - frankly it felt like a fake job and made me miss being technical. Unfortunately, I've just never been able to have the chops for leetcode interviews which is why I took the opp to transition to TPM and gain more leverage.

Fortunately, my friends who are better off are very supportive - in some of these interviews I can't help but think I sound desperate or maybe just annoying.

Failed relationships (romantic, friendly, professional, etc), lost job, bills piling up, apartment a disaster, inability to build a mental model that can cope with your current situation.

I've realized this is kind of what my mental model has lead to, the worst part is I don't really know how to fix it or change. Fortunately I have years of living expenses if needed, have insurance and a number of close friends. However, WFH has gotten me to a point where it's a struggle to even do a few leetcode problems a day, work on contracting or even make a youtube video. Insurance doesn't cover mental healthcare and it never really helped before.

Could be worse, also 28 and I just got laid off after my first year of being a technical product manager. I have a somewhat scattered three years of dev experience prior, although around 2yrs was my longest stint.

Been applying to jobs for about five weeks and other than a few interviews nothing has kicked back. Either no response or flat out denied, contemplating just re-learning a bunch of leetcode stuff I hate. All of my friends make north of $200k and I've just been floundering.

Future does not seem bright - clearly my track record is a black mark of some kind.

I'd say over 60% at least - a friend of mine bought a second-hand M1 macbook without any issues. Key here is that the previous user has to initiate a full-wipe on the device, if that happens anyone can continue to use the device. This is similar to SIM locks on iPhones, completely intended to reduce theft.

I actually support this - the amount of material involved isn't trivial but is largely aluminum. I think the positives of deterring thieves / illegal resellers far exceeds the environmental impact. A better approach in my opinion is Apple licensing certain resellers to allow a reset with some kind of proof of purchase. This kind of provenance is already coming to eBay and tbh this is another key area of right to repair in which I disagree with Louis Rossman.

I'd be very open to paying for a "license" of ChatGPT that I run on my own horde of nVidia GPU's. Something like $2k per year for a "secured" personal license would be awesome. The largest line item for all stable diffusion / AI things is compute cost.

IMO the folks at the All In podcast nailed this - at work so I don't have time to find the exact clip but basically their synopsis went like this:

When money was cheap to borrow, borrowing against stock and increasing headcount was seen as a metric that could pump stock price. Hence, hire as much as possible (especially engineers since they drive the most value at many of these huge tech orgs). Problem is, money is no longer cheap to borrow and real revenue is king now - having excess headcount that isn't resulting in clear value (something these companies are exceedingly good at measuring) means layoffs to reach the prior equilibrium of "real revenue" generated per engineer.

I'm somewhat moderate and I definitely do not trust cops and do not appreciate their presence in my neighborhood or around my home. I get it, it's a hard job, but at least attempt to solve heinous crimes - for instance, a robber shot a handgun 12 times and the police simply threw their hands up saying "yeah, we just cant find that guy" even though a neighbor had clear video evidence of the license plate and individual attempting to walk up to their garage.

It was weird, because the geographic delineation was seemingly random. I could travel by train three hours outside of Amsterdam and encounter zero issues with Apple Pay or VISA. But certain neighborhoods in Amsterdam, especially De Pijp seemed to have a militant stance against non dutch payment processors.

Bikes are great, I commute on a bike in a US city with decent infrastructure. I still wear a helmet every single time I get on a bike.

Even low speed crashes or encounters with pedestrians can result in serious head injuries.

After visiting amsterdam this summer, most of the city was honestly pretty disgusting. The architecture is beautiful as is taking a river cruise or viewing other cities around NL, however a lot of the central city just smelled like stale beer, was packed with sketchy guys trying to sell me coccaine and other illegal drugs. Prostitutes walking around was far from a "cultural element" it was just an area filled with weird euros looking for favors.

Food was generally really disappointing, however grocery stores / delivery apps were incredibly useful. The most annoying thing to me was how certain neighborhoods flat out do not accept Visa / Mastercard. Basically every other developed nation accepts Visa, I was annoyed and decided to not go back to areas where they literally couldn't take my money. That said, PUBLIC TRANSIT IN NL IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! But I don't for a second believe many ppl don't get TBI's from bike crashes without helmets.

This seems like an absolute legal nightmare - ToS will never hold up in court, you've basically just saved criminals and scammers a few days of work.

Fortunately systems for bringing in "fresh" air without dumping heat (by means of a heat exchanger) now exist which basically removes the issue of indoor air quality / Co2 and VOC buildup in highly insulated homes. However, circulation is essential.

The biggest issue that still arises in highly insulated homes is moisture buildup. Even with ample air circulation, modern building techniques at large have accepted having a home that "breathes" is more important to prevent dangerous / destructive mold from growing in enclosed airspaces / under siding etc.

Also, "high performance" homes in most of the country, especially the east coast are at least 1.8x to 2.5x as expensive as the average builder home. This is simply not accessible even to relatively financially equipped home buyers.

That said, my current apt is incredibly well insulated and in comparison to my parent's home it's wild how much more efficient my dwelling is. At times in the winter I barely use my heat pump for days at a time to keep my home comfortable.

I wonder how they plan to mitigate the long-term risks of dangerous prions which can continue to live in soil for decades and pose a serious health risk to humans.

For this reason, I'm going to be cremated with molten salt from a solar installation when I die :)

This fully explains my time working at a startup acquired by Amazon. We were provided the lowest spec macbook pro to the extent that lead engineers were literally waiting around for hours every day waiting for builds to complete. Some couldn't even use two monitors due to display output limitations.

Anyone who has worked for amazon is fully aware of how the company internals being literally held together with duct tape.

I'm currently quite happy with my two remote gigs. Both are full-time, both employers are fully aware of the situation.

That said, where I currently live there's just not that much opportunity in-person / I'd vastly prefer train commute to driving.

Plan for now is to keep churning at current TC full remote as long as possible, re-evaluate when my lease is up for renewal. I was glad to leave New York in 2021, however it still undoubtedly has the best opportunities in tech for those of us who have no interest in relocating to the Bay Area.

edit - I can without question say I'm glad I avoided the FOMO of buying a home. I love where I live now, but if remote wanes to any significant extent I'd go out of my mind dealing with traffic.

I'm not religious and I still find the notion that society has just accepted people selling OF like content as degenerate. Far more degenerate than pornography because what they're selling is a parasocial relationship that also keys into the sexual brain bait that pornography does.
