Why would an author complain that the average 12 books read by an average American a year is likely a combination of those who read nothing after high school and those that read vicariously yet not seek out a source, simply let an unverified, unsourced, unreferenced thing sit there.
It seems that reading 100 pages a day does not guarantee development of critical skills.

Make a website. HTTPS. Put something like PHProxy on it. If you really want to, stick on some messaging, like a BBS. Then you can upload stuff. It's not going to be quite as quick as snapping a pic on WhatsApp or Twitter, but it's not bad.

Indeed. Without veering of into another discussion, other enforcement includes apps and phone monitoring. This isn't limited to other apps on a phone but firmware, input methods, even simply switching IPs.
As well as VPNs existing, international sim cards also 'bypass' internet filtering. Absolute restriction of the internet is not the goal. The goal is to not allow anything approaching a critical mass to do so, especially less technically literate who would not seek out VPNs etc unless they were marketed to or directly facilitated. The next is to all but remove the browser, email is truly dead having never been a big thing socially, with a domestic app orientated landscape; mobile penetration is far beyond lap/desktop.

Fist, SF salaries are high as is cost of living. Perhaps compare to Dallas. Or even Toronto.
Then there's social insurance aka pension. A SE in the US I'd assume to have healthcare (caveat - as long as in employment). An in terms of private investment such as stocks, the German stock market is quite different from the US one in terms of composition (as companies raising funds tend to use different means) hence future asset-liability matching. And a fair bit harder to do your own company (and VC funding) in Germany due to 'esoteric' tax requirements for companies (including but not limited to needing to pay tax in advance).
I might be missing something here. Can I not pick up a Nokia, Sony or other phone for an order of magnitude less than this price? It might even get some kudos.

This might belay a greater stagnation, and not a bad one. The laptop I'm typing this comment on, a ThinkPad manufactured in 2012, works just fine. It has an upgrade to a SSD and a new battery. It cost around $100 three years ago.
The watch on my arm, if choosing to put it on, was manufactured in the 1990s. It just needs a new battery every 3-4 years.
I have no idea how old my alarm clock is. It's mainly unused because body clock works well enough. I do not need a step counter as when going for a morning stroll or jog I know roughly how far I'm going and how many steps that equates to. Nor do I need a meal planner app because the amount of calories in various food stuffs fortunately stays quite constant.
While mobile payments have been all the rage where I live for some time, I get by well enough with a technology that doesn't aggregate personal information for 3rd parties called cash, with two high-tech devices in my wallet being a bank card and a public transport card. Re-tooling workers between industries in more developed countries is much easier, because of a workforce that's expected to not just have a single skill or is trained/expected to support more than one.
Quality in the west also has potential for strength because of greater devolution to the production floor.
But I do have a problem with saying 'west' vs 'east', everyone can learn from each other. I have problems with assumptions of superiority. Could framing it as a question of learning and leadership be better?
I also don't get. In my experience, lggage shops are usually divided into higher end stores with carefully curated displays that won't want clutter or budget stores that have no room to move as it is.
And I won't want the risk of someone walking off with my bag.

Edit: Reading the FAQ, it's not luggage stores, it's stores that store luggage. Restaurants, delis, anywhere really. This makes much more sense.
