I'm not convinced that is true. The JCB digger didn't put groundworkers out of business. A consultant that can get more done in a day is worth a lot more than one who can't. There is still skill required in wielding the tool of the day and that skill is marketable.

This is very dystopian in my opinion. I'm not the arms, legs, sensors and actuators for a machine super intelligence. I wouldn't treat another human as my slave because they aren't as intelligent as I am any more than I would expect to become a slave for a machine. This is our world (for now) and that is why we fit in. Not because we can serve.

We've known of a very good way to fix primary schools since 1907. Nearly 120 years. We simply do not want to do it because the labour and materials are more than we want to spend.

It is easier to search for keywords (Capture the Flag) vs acronyms (CTF) which likely resolve to other terms as well. Child trust fund is the first result when I put CTF into Google. Admittedly searching CTF security solves that issue. A quick link to an article on CTF to make the post digestible by outsiders seems reasonable enough.

The people who designed Mach in 1985 would almost certainly design something very different if they had today’s hardware, AI agents, secure enclaves, NPUs, ubiquitous networking, cloud edges, wearables, smart home devices and generally device density per person.

HarmonyOS is interesting because it points at the right axis: one coherent OS fabric across many devices, not a set of separate device OSes glued together by continuity features. Continuity, iCloud, Handoff, AirDrop, HomeKit etc are impressive glue. They are not the same as one logical OS fabric.

Because nothing lasts forever. Take a look at what Harmony OS is capable of if you want to see what a modern take on an OS and ecoystem looks like. It sure isn't the pinnacle either.

Hopefully there is work being done on the replacement for the Mach kernel and OSX / iOS in general. If there isn't that would be a grave mistake and exactly the kind of one someone like Tim Cook would make. Look at how he fumbled AI at Apple. I'm not saying he isn't talented, he is, but he isn't a product guy or an engineer.

This could happen in parallel with existing software dev skunkworks style.

The capital return program was a massive own goal in my humble opinion. It will work for now but soon Apple will go through their Intel years because they spent too long sweating their (admittedly incredible) assets. Something like Harmony OS is going to eat their lunch and they will only have themselves to blame.

Also a couple of big investments that might have been better spent elsewhere e.g. Apple TV+ and the Apple Car. The vision pro and the audible gasp the audience let out when the price was revealed was a particular low point. Having owned that device for 14 days before returning it I wish they had left the screen off the front, reduced the weight by 25% and done something about the price. What good is a developer device that is hard to make, expensive and flashy.

With all due respect if you are prompting correctly and following approaches such as TDD / extensive testing then correctness is not out the window. That is a misunderstanding likely caused by older versions of these models.

Correctness can be as complete as any other new code, I've used the AI to port algorithms from Python to Rust which I've then tested against math oracles and published examples. Not only can I check my code mathematically but in several instances I've found and fixed subtle bugs upstream. Even in well reviewed code that has been around for many years and is well used. It is simply a tool.
