But if we could build an uninterpretable machine learning model that beats any hand-built traditional ‘physics’ model, would it really be physics?

At that point I wonder if it would be possible to feed that uninterpretable model back into another model that makes sense of it all and outputs sets of equations that humans could understand.

I realize it's allegorical in nature, but one of the conclusions made in the article is

Reaching the absolute information is individual and simply any human being is able to achieve that.

Is that a reasonable conclusion? I'm curious how this jives with the 'on the shoulders of giants' concept that we've built a lot of our modern knowledge on.

Similar story. Was in a caravan with friends on a road trip and apple maps had us going onto a dirt road to save time. We go overlanding a lot, so dirt roads aren't weird, but we decided to stop and double check before proceeding too far on the road.

About a minute later, a border control agent pulls up next to us and starts with the standard interrogation. Turns out, apple maps had been telling people to use a dirt road to circumvent a border control checkpoint - which according to the officer was a felony. We proceeded back onto the pavement and through the checkpoint where they waved us through. The dirt road wouldn't have been faster at all, so it was puzzling why it was giving those directions.

I wonder why this mentality doesn't apply to other parts of society, like our police forces (i.e. shut a department down when an officer kills an innocent), or corporations that cause death/disaster? Is it because in those situations, the deaths aren't too big a price to pay?

you'd still be exposing the database system itself to the public regardless of the credentials you were using for the email service, as opposed to keeping it all within a VPC which seems to be what most guides recommend.

I assume the difference would be that having your database exposed presents additional surface area for attacks. A rube-goldberg style setup probably presents its own risks, but personally I just use AWS SES for my transactional/marketing emails and it's a one-way pipe that doesn't present any significant risks as far as I can see.

How do you define mass emails though? I don't think the people who are sending out a hundred emails are really a problem as far as spam is concerned. On my other account here I have my email listed, and I expect to be contacted every now and then about random HN projects, and I am. I don't consider those spam.

Automatically signing you up for a newsletter is lame, but I've emailed people here in the past asking for opinions on new projects - I don't consider that spam. I'm talking like 20-30 emails maybe - no scraping involved.

3500 sounds low IMO when you look at some of the drone videos in SoCal of the people tracking these (mostly juveniles in SoCal).

Also they don't often confuse Sea Lions for humans, but it's still a good explanation for the few attacks that do occur. It's actually impressive how good they are at recognizing their prey.

I think the stronger interpretation is that as sapient beings, we're each our own 'island universe' as Huxley said in 'The Doors of Perception' - I believe it's also a big concept in zen practice.

It seems likely that hundred-year-long droughts are very common in California. If you've ever seen Lake Tenaya in Yosemite, you may notice some dead trees sticking out the surface... Those trees are from a drought period in the Middle Ages [1] when the lake was much lower and totally fry in some spots - enough for pines to grow. Those deadheads are about 1000 years old! Highly recommend kayaking that lake.
