So I'm currently using "OpenCV University"'s playlist on YouTube to get myself up to speed with computer vision, and this has lead into a spiraling staircase down into the depths of CNNs.

And after that, I've had some recent projects that I love to mess around with such as a better license plate detection API than what currently exists for U.K. plates, and once I completed those two courses I had a good enough baseline to work from where I'd encounter a repository and google around if I needed to learn something new.

Short, simple, not painful etc. and I don't have the advanced mathematical background (nor the background within the American mathematical notation) that I'd need to digest the MIT course set, so this learning path has been the best for me. I'm no expert whatsoever, though.

...Are you sure you want to push money launderers more into crypto? Cause that's all you'll be achieving using this.

A lot of the velocity you listed was not as quick as it seems.

Supersonic flight is a question of manufacturing processes more than anything; we could always scale engines to make more power, just that making them light while being producible to a specific degree of accuracy was difficult.

Nuclear fission was discovered in 1938 and implemented successfully in 1945. Of course nobody would have thought of it - just like how I would never have thought of a ladder if I never saw one and never had a need for one. It's a question of looking at the fundamental laws and materials of matter, finding their inner workings and theorizing more useful ways of using these inner workings. We didn't put a stupid amount of effort into nuclear fission relative to how much it changed the world - I'm willing to bet that more cost has been put into r&d for office furniture than for the nuclear bomb.

Chess is a simple game of calculation, not a sign of intelligence. It merely reflects the ability to calculate, which is the strength of scalable computers. It just so happens that we came up with computers and they work well in this space - there's no telling of things we haven't discovered because we haven't thought to implement anything to do with them.

Sure, computers can write symphonies, but they are very far away from inventing something like a symphony. Which I would describe as something close to sapiogenesis.

I maintain that intelligence won't be cracked in my lifetime, knowing that I could look silly doing so. We can't even quantify what intelligence is, let alone begin to work towards it.

If they can paint, then so can I. And it took me years to learn how to do decent stickmen!

Either way, we are not going to see intelligent computers in our lifetime, let alone elephants. Don't mean to condemn them but sapio-genesis is often oversold as being too easy. We are nowhere near being capable of ourselves, we have just learned how to process things similarly to how brains do it, at a fraction of the efficacy and ten trillion times the cost.

Definitely true from a office politics standpoint. And incredibly painful. Not all problems are solvable in the office and this is for sure one of them - when I was in this position, the only thing I could do was switch jobs.

He does have a point, though. The Chinese labor policy of "more" is strictly benefiting the Chinese economy.

Not that it's much of a downside for us; if you live in the west you are competing with people who don't do much outside of 9-5. We have the benefit of having the ability to apply the Chinese "work till you're dead" mindset and gaining a competitive advantage, on an individual scale.

It all comes at great human cost of course, but it's not like it's not an effective method.

Seems like a particularly grim manifestation of the worst-case scenario in federalism. It would be quite easy for either side to claim that "people died because *the other side* did/didn't pass this law!".

The important part of playing the lottery in this case would be to not play with garbage tickets, right? In the sense that, if you catch a user on any hyper-specific page which seems to have appeared on their search/advertising preference results, you want them to not feel like they looked at spam...

If not, this approach feels like it would be easy to abuse!

I usually copy something only in the moment and immediately "clear" my clipboard by CTRL + C'ing a single character from some textbox/selectable field :-)

For me, it's not a buffer but just a line of communication between two programs. When I have tried to treat it like the former I have found that mistakes are common and the benefits are very slight.

Anything that injects DLLs and hooks into lib functions will have this effect on unstable software that was not written with a comprehensive understanding of how the majority of Windows programs operate. It's not Discord's fault that they are using the APIs provided to them by Microsoft fairly, legally, cleanly and non-intrusively and not everyone supports them.

Maybe it's the assumption that legitimate/good-will programs do not interact that causes this issue. It's ridiculous, and untrue. I don't really use Discord and I have a strong distaste for the kinds of social circles that it breeds, but it is a technically excellent product.

I like to rag on WordPress as the next man but I do have to ask - why haven't you done any better?

If it's so easy, raise a few million bucks and outdo everyone. Surely?

Maybe your product is the next Stripe, where everyone currently in the market is so woefully inadequate that one company can come and clean up despite having mild expectations upon start-up. Or maybe, just maybe, you are missing the point, in regards to what they provide the current market and how they pivot towards the next!

(Obviously, I don't mean to call out anyone in particular, but Wordpress has a significant-enough marketshare that this defence is to-be-expected).

If so, electric chargers are the way to go :) I got to touch plenty of IoT-type firmware at my previous employer. Current one doesn't deal with firmware but we're pretty specialized, business-wise. I'm sure that a similar industry is opening up in America

I don't necessarily disagree with using increasing efficiency as a vehicle for survival in this European apocalypse but you need to consider proportionality/scale of the problem.

In less than two years, the price of the usage of public grid electricity will have increased in the U.K. from ~£1,600 to £6,500. These useless household statistics only help to hide the fact that businesses, who do things with this electricity that don't include running a T.V. pointlessly for 8 hours a day, or heating an unoccupied room, are going to suffer more than anyone. It's easy to take the British consumer's word for it, and understand that a bill which served as a relatively small expense in a past life will now be 4x bigger than it was before, but the reality is that doing things is significantly less affordable. Manufacturing, hospitality, healthcare, public and private services etc. will all be smashed to bits, and their utilities bills aren't going up 300% but more like 500-1500%.

Is it remotely possible to push energy efficiency to the point that we are using half of the energy we were before? It's entirely possible, in my mind. With trillions of dollars of investment.

It's simply not worth it. It's better to take the money and run, if daddy warbucks is offering to give us 3.9% APR on a couple hundred billion dollar loans, than it is to pay in cash and pray for better times with improvements that come along with science and technology.

Loans on the scale that nations take add additional risk to the creditors - the risk of not paying them back is a final one.

If a million people don't pay their credit cards off in a year, it doesn't matter - the market is full of those that will. But if U.K. gilts don't pay out, then a lot more people are screwed, and there's a lot more incentive to keep that cash cow mooing.

Monorepos are unreasonably effective for a product that you can guarantee won't scale to silly proportions. They also provide you some great capabilities for introducing new team members to your solution, bringing aboard contractors if something breaks or you face some regulatory issues later on, etc.
