Now put a giant, 30 second video of the product being used, directly below "Design by hand.Code by agent."

No one is clicking Get Started or Buy Now until they know what the product is, and a 30 second video is 100x better than any amount of text.

I know tailwind is the star these days, but as a back-end dev, nothing comes close to bootstrap in terms of productivity and aesthetics. I've used tailwind and I like it - I've even paid for tailwind UI - but for crud apps that don't require a lot of custom styling, bootstrap is still my default.

Anyone else still using and enjoying bootstrap for new projects?

Pleasantly surprised to see this on HN. In the minefield of the spiritual marketplace, where you can never be sure which teachers are authentic and which aren't, Michael James is worth a look. Sometimes a little dry and repetitive, but steadfast in his message and his adoration for his teacher.

Ruby is the very least favorite of all the programming languages I've had to use regularly over my career. Its syntax strongly favors cuteness over familiarity

How do you define regular? I use both Ruby and JS almost daily, and have previously used Java and python for several years. I find ruby a joy to use and have no issues with 'familiarity'

This site seems to me an imitation of sitebuilderreport which was featured on indiehackers recently [1]. The design and copywriting are similar. OP, was your site inspired by sitebuilderreport or are you connected with that site?

catchy name, and well done on getting .com, but if you search for "specret" in google, it autocorrects to "spectre" and shows results for the Bond movie.

Your design looks great. You mentioned that getmefast did it and I had a look at their portfolio which isn't as strong in my opinion as your design and UI. Did you UI designer have to change what they came up with?

Actually I really like the layout and design. It just needs a little polish but I'm sure that will happen over time as singer responds to feedback.

One reason: design.

I have virtually no design ability. Believe me I've tried and failed miserably. Over the years I've read a number of books and tutorials, I've tried to emulate styles and designs from sites I like, I've spent countless hours in photoshop and I've asked for input and feedback on public forums. Nothing seems to help. It takes me a disproportionate amount of time to complete a design task compared to anyone with even a basic proficiency.

When I see apps like this one and others for example, from rails rumble put together over the course of a few days I'm truly envious of people's design ability. I've lost count of the number of projects I've abandoned because of frustrations with the design.

I've finally just accepted that I was never cut out for design work, that I'm much happier and far more productive writing code. For the next project I start, I'll save enough money to hire a designer first.

Congrats on launching something, that first hurdle kills more startups than anything else.

As far as the product goes, I agree with the sentiment in the other comments - I don't see how this is any different to email? Perhaps you could have a feature matrix on your landing page comparing facebook, iddhis and email to show the similarities and differences

A lot of the comments in this thread seem to imply that brand specialists will always deliver a quality logo. I can think of one recent example where that wasn't the case: the London 2010 Olympics logo. It cost £400,000 and was negatively received by the public and many industry professionals:

I often see design contests for open source projects.

Why does no one seem to mind when there is usually an uproar against commercial contests/spec-work/crowdsourcing sites?

I disagree. People do care about privacy, they just have no way to show it other than to quit facebook and that's something they're not prepared to do.

They'd rather put up with poor privacy controls and keep their account than have no account at all. Just because they're not leaving now, doesn't mean they won't leave when a viable alternative to facebook comes up.

A very good set of tech talks on a range of topics, especially of interest to ruby developers.

Being open source, I suspect it's only a matter of time before someone writes a plugin/fork that works with Amazon S3. The user would then only need to sign up for an S3 account and that largely removes all four of the roadblocks you mention.

For anyone in the UK, going to google.com gives you 'original' google without the background. A redirect sends you back to the UK version but if you set your homepage to google.com/ncr it should stick
