I used anki for learning japanese, and what I noticed while is that, at least for me the act of reviewing flashcards became a burden itself. It was not fun nor pleasant. I’d go back to using Anki if i’d know how to solve this.

Hi! I noticed that the button open in spotify opens a premade spotify playlist, but the songs seem to be wrong. I also noticed that the covers on the website match the ones of the mismatched songs. Perhaps those songs only don’t exist on spotify? For refrence i opened the 2005 Japan playlist.

I don't think the social media landscape is inherently bad, but the ways in which it evolved. And I think the shift in social media towards consuming content instead of connecting with others is a direct reflection of the era we live in; one of abundant information.

I had the same problem last year, re-indexing all the files fixed it for me[1].

That being said, macOS was definitely more snappy back on Catalina, which was the first version I had so I can't vouch for Snow Leopard. Each update after Catalina felt gradually worse and from what i heard Tahoe feels like the last nail in the coffin.

I hope the UX team will deliver a more polished, expressive and minimal design next time.

I went to Kyoto last year during what can be considered peak season. My accommodation was quiet central. I have to say I didn't have a problem with overturism. Sure if you visit what everyone markets on Instagram there are flocks of tourists everywhere. If you just randomly explore the city, you can find equally beautiful places that lack tourists and in my opinion are far more charming.

I think the problem is that since Japan has been trending on social media, everyone goes to the same 3 temples, eats at the same 5 restaurants and so on. And social media sure doesn't help in spreading the tourist flux evenly.

On my Intel mac searching with cmd+space for a file takes under a second. Maybe there is a problem on your end?

From your article it seems like you benchmark compile times. I am not an expert on the subject, but I don't see the point in comparing ARM compilation times with Intel. There are probably different tricks involved in compilation and the instructions set are not the same.

Neither, that's up to your individual preference. Although I think that controversial threads have more noise, but sometimes provide a more enjoyable read.

I once read here on HN that a good metric for filtering controversial comment sections is number of upvotes/comments. If it's bellow one, the thread is probably controversial.

I feel like, for me, it’s that I am more familiar with writing in C and switching to C++ seems rather difficult. So, sure I am reimplementing features that already exist in anoter language, it just so happens in this case is C++. Why not use python if you want to avoid reimplementing the wheel as much as possible. And sure python is not suited for game development but I just wanted to make a point with it. I think in the end ising a language you are most familiar with results in the most amount of enjoyable coding.

I've been using macOS since 2020, but for the last year I have seriously considered switching to Linux. macOS Catalina felt really fast, easy to use, and lacked the useless features they kept adding and the ipadOS like interface they began implementing. In 2020, the feature set felt much more intentional.

In light of some comments and videos here, I’d like to morbidly announce that I can no longer distinguish between AI videos and real ones. However, I’ll take this as an opportunity to move from short-form content to long-form, since it seems that space hasn’t yet been hijacked by AI.

I believe that intuition is often not enough to have a concrete thought. It’s more of a feeling, you can’t reach conclusions based on intuition, you also need reason.

There are many concepts in our thought stream without a 'word' or even a simple 'phrase' to label them.

If those concepts would exist you wouldn’t be able to explain them using words, no matter how complex the phrase may be. Taking a phrase and expecting it to have a single word replace is unrealistic. You can’t just asign a word to every possible sentence/phrase. Having a direct translation means you don’t necessarily need that word in your language.

One might argue that the limit of our language is the limit of our ability to think.

You can't neglect the fact that, despite their lack of innovation while sitting on a huge pile of money, Apple has brought a few good things in the last decade. For example, their use of ARM chips in Macs has influenced other companies to adopt this architecture, which in some ways is better than x86. Another product market they opened up with their "innovation" is the AirPods, which are, in my opinion, better for daily tasks than bulky headphones as they are easier to carry around and more discreet.

But I've never understood why a device from a secretive, developer-hostile company is supposed to be some amazing tool.

An iPhone may lack some basic features, but I find the overall experience more polished than Android.

I know there are people who positively love their iPhone and the status it apparently confers in their friends group.

My 2021 iPhone SE doesn't confer me any status, but I agree that some people just buy iPhones because they are expensive.

Anyway, in the end, it's about everyone's opinion. But Apple’s AI seems like overkill. I definitely don't want AI spilled into every app that is on my phone. I'm happy using the phone app, taking photos whenever I feel like it, and keeping in touch with my friends over WhatsApp/Discord/Messages.

I decided to use Bitdefender a few months ago becouse i suspected my Mac had malware. I was right, there was a adware in the firefox files so it did it’s job.

But, my experience with the antivirus was horrible. When i first opened the app there were popus everywhere advertising for their other products, and the overall ui didn’t look trustworthy.

I am no security expert, so I’m asking: is this the best way to deal with malware?

The same thing happend with Netflix raising prices. Probably everyone nobody canceled their subscription after the increased price just becouse it’s not worth the effort. And the price raise is incremental just so nobody will complain.

Besides, there’s no way of really knowing whether Chat Control would actually be (or remain) limited to CSAM.

I definitely agree with the article here. Probably after Chat Control will be implemented for CSAM this would act as a gateway towards using this tehnology for other things.

I am curious whether chat control will extend to mail or other means of online comunication, if it will be implemented ofc(hopefully not).

I had a similar experience this morning. I made the huge mistake of opening Famdom on my phone, and it took me a few minutes of blankly staring at the screen to realize this is actually a legit site. The amount of ads they managed to pack on a 4.7 inch screen was mesmerising.

The problem is i got stuck at that game and searched for a quick solution. Then google straight up made me end up in that pile of ads. I hope people will start realizing what that website is and hopefully migrate their wikis to a better place, although it probably won’t happen.
