That sounds weird. I won't refute, because I used a Google Accounts email (albeit with my own domain). But what makes you say that?

We all know companies that have transformed industries (e.g., Google, Netflix, Spotify) by analysing information about you and giving you personalised suggestions that seem to know you better then even yourself – but where is the equivalent for jobs? Netflix’s recommendations are not based on “back of the box” blurbs - instead, they extract traits from movies and match them to your taste, based on your interactions. So why are we still evaluating people based on their “blurbs,” i.e. their CVs?
We use a combination of unique behavioural data, machine learning, and of course efficient product development, to go beyond the CV and find patterns that humans would otherwise not detect (at least not at scale).
Our longer-term goal is to be not only a preferred destination for transactional hiring, but a compelling, intuitive guide to planning and executing your career goals.
We have just closed a successful fundraising round and are expanding our team! This is a super exciting time to join, as it’s still early enough that you'll help us shape the foundations of the platform and tackle some very interesting problems, yet we’ve already got enough usage, traction and data that you'll have a real, immediate effect on people's lives.
We are very serious about finding the right mix of talent, passion and ownership that meets our values, and is necessary for an ambitious early-stage startup. As we grow, the expectation is that you will too. All doors are open, from diving deeper into a technical speciality, to moving sideways into another area, to mentorship and leadership roles - in the end, it's down to you, your goals and your performance.
If you want to be a part of a big, ambitious story, let's chat!

To add to other people's anecdotal evidence, Trello is painfully slow for the board I use the most. Perhaps I over-use it - I have 27 lists, the longest of which has some 1500 cards. But it's slow to the point where Chrome asks if I want to kill the tab at least once every 2 days.
It works fine for other boards, so I assume it wasn't built with so many lists+cards in mind. But the fact it, it can be slow, almost unusable, at least for certain use cases.
Interestingly, I am tired of most projects declaring the language in which they were written upfront, especially when they are a copy of something else, "but written in ${language}!" - however, I am interested in the language a text editor is written in. Or, rather, the language it's extensible in.
I'm a long-time Emacs user, but have been growing increasingly tired of it. Whichever incarnation of Emacs I turn to, it just seems old-fashioned and outdated. And yet, whenever I try another editor, I end up coming back to Emacs. And one of the reasons is often the language (or ability at all) with which to extend it.
This reminds me of "Machine with Concrete", by Arthur Ganson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q-BH-tvxEg
From the video description:
Each worm/worm gear pair reduces the speed of the motor by
1/50th. Since there are 12 pairs of gears, the final speed
reduction is calculated by (1/50)12. The implications are
quite large. With the motor turning around 200 revolutions
per minute, it will take well over two trillion years before
the final gear makes but one turn. Given the truth of this
situation, it is possible to do anything at all with the
final gear, even embed it in concrete.Well, I meant it more as "hopeful pondering", but point taken :)
Rosetta wouldn't have some mirrors, or even reflective surfaces, would it? It could position itself to reflect sunlight onto Philae.
I mean, I'm sure Rosetta has neither (in useful conditions), but there's a thought for next time :/
Layar - https://www.layar.com/ - Amsterdam (The Netherlands)
We're hiring Python developers, QA engineers and DevOps engineers :)
The full job descriptions are at https://www.layar.com/about/jobs/ . But, in short, we're looking for passionate, talented engineers to help us shape the augmented reality landscape.
Apply at the link above, or drop me a line at rbp at layar.com.
I admit I initially upvoted because of the alliteration. Then I read the article, which was quite interesting (even more so because I'm Brazilian). Then I wanted to upvote it because of its content, but I no longer could. Which made me sad :/
C-a <TAB> is bound to the "focus" command. "focus" can receive parameters ("up", "down", "top" and "bottom") Without parameters, it defaults to "down", which is why you cycle downwards with you press C-a <TAB>.
To tab backwards, you call "focus up". It's not bound by default, but you can bind to, say, C-a U:
bind U focus up
and from then on "C-a U" cycles upwards.
Amsterdam - The Netherlands. Full-time.
Layar (https://www.layar.com) is looking for a Back-End Python Developer, an Android Developer and a QA Engineer.
We are a front-runner in mobile AR technology. Our app is used by millions of users every month worldwide and needs to be the best in its class, our goal being to grow it to one of the top apps worldwide. Our app aims to stretch the technologies provided by iOS and Android to their limits, and relies heavily on reliable and highly efficient backend services and infrastructure to deliver an amazing experience. For content creators, our web front-end must be solid and quickly adaptable to new user demands.
We have three positions currently open:
------------------------------------------
- Back-End Python Developer
You will be joining a team of server developers with varied skills in web development, systems development, devops and QA.
Your primary roles will be to champion good software development practices in the team and to deliver high quality Python code. You will contribute to architecture and technical design of our back-end and of the Layar ecosystem as a whole. Our development team is small, and you can - and are encouraged to - have a big impact on product and technical decisions.
We expect you to be an experienced coder and technical designer, with a proven track record of designing, building, delivering and maintaining multi-server, scalable systems. A passion for delivering good products is essential. You know not only to make a computer do what you want, but also how to build (and keep building) a complex software product, within a varied and dynamic team.
We are specifically looking for:
* A proven track record in working on heterogeneous and distributed systems.
* 3+ Years of Python development experience.
* Experience with distributed source control (e.g. Mercurial, Git).
* Flexibility to deal with a rapidly changing environment.
Preferably you also have
* Experience with Python frameworks such as Django and Twisted.
* Experience with Infrastructure-as-a-Service, preferably AWS.
* Experience with automating analysis of large data sets.
------------------------------------------
- Android Developer
We are seeking a senior Android Developer who will take charge of our Android app and bring them to the next level. You will be working closely with our core team of mobile developers, buidling some of the core technologies that integrate in the app using assembly, C++ (NDK) and Java where appropriate to achieve the best performance. You will be responsible for building and delivering the new features on our roadmap. The ideal candidate will be flexible, self-motivated, loves making excellent code and takes pride in creating a great user experience.
Your primary role will be to maintain, improve and further develop our Android app. You'll be able to use frameworks provided by other team members and work closely together with them to ensure tight integration in the Android app.
Your key responsibilities will be:
* to architect, develop and maintain the Android app;
* to ensure best possible performance, quality and responsiveness of the app;
* to help and guide the product team when designing new features.
------------------------------------------
- QA Engineer
We are seeking a QA Engineer who will be responsible for the quality of our front- and back-end web platforms. You will test our products through every stage of the development process and will give the final go for deploying new features or new releases. The ideal candidate will be flexible, self-motivated, loves finding bugs with a comprehensive suite of test cases and hates it when a customer is the one that hits a bug. You will be proactive in writing automated tests as well as helping developers write their own, and you will never manually test an issue twice: if something has escaped existing tests, you will write a new test for it.
You will work closely in an Agile methodology with the engineering team, consisting of backend and frontend developers, and devops, as well as with the product team designing and creating functional requirements. You will be responsible to set up and maintain a comprehensive test suite, whenever possible fully automated, covering all regressions and new features built by engineering team.
Your key responsibilities will be:
* To specify and create test cases for new features;
* To write automated test scripts that will provide test reports at every sprint;
* To profile our apps in order to check for best performance, responsiveness and memory footprint;
* To assist the decision makers in approving the final go for each release.
As a QA Engineer, we expect you to have a proven track record of creating test suites and testing web applications and web services. You should have enough programming knowledge (preferably but not necessarily of Python) to be able to write tests for complex scenarios. Experience in continuous integration and continuous deployment are a plus.
In order to ensure the highest quality, we require:
* 4+ years of experience as QA Engineer;
* Excellent understanding of REST APIs and structured responses such as JSON or XML;
* Excellent understanding of the web stack and its related technologies;
* Good understanding of client-server APIs;
* Experience with Jira and test management tools such as TestLink, or similar tools;
* Experience with test automation tools such as SOAPUI, Selenium, PhantomJS and scripting from the command-line;
* Flexibility to deal with a rapidly changing environment;
* Passion for quality.
Preferably you also have
• Good experience in writing web software using a framework such as Django/Python;
• Experience with setting up server-based applications, such as a LAMP environment.
------------------------------------------
All positions are full-time, based on our office located downtown Amsterdam. Please apply at https://www.layar.com/about/jobs/ . If you have any questions, feel free to email me at rbp@layar.com

I don't see anything on that page that suggests it's US-only. Generally speaking, Sparkfun delivers internationally: https://www.sparkfun.com/static/customer_service#ShippingPol...
I agree in principle. But, in fairness, I felt that the "three = 1" post was out of genuine puzzlement. I was certainly puzzled when I saw it, and it was very enlightening to see lifthrasiir's answer.
Well, to be fair, you still have only "heard about it somewhere", and still don't "have any proof of it" (unless you really trust the parent commenter, and I see the account was created 3 days ago).
Not saying you should trust Linode, but that your confidence in thar rumour probably shouldn't have improved after the parent comment.
About the undo, try and make things simple. The ability to undo only your very last action will probably account for most people's needs.
I'm not the person you're replying to, but there are my comments.
1. Skip any modals. First time users don't care about loading configuration, and current users don't care about it that often that it merits such prominent placing. Have sensible defaults, and load them automatically.
1a. Sensible defaults are hard to achieve :) Measure user activity and see how people *actually* use the product, and extract your default behaviour from that.
1b. There is already a "load" link at the menu, that's enough for users to load config later.
2. Have you ever used Trello? They serve a similar purpose, and have a nice solution to this: the bottom of a column ("list", in their parlance) is clickable, to create a new card.3. FWIW, I've grown to expect a small gear on the top-right as being the menu, and end up always clicking there when I'm looking for something I can't immediately find on the main interface.
4. There is no #4 :)
5. You could also check into external services that provide a save api, such as Google Drive or Dropbox. Localstorage would be cool, but my usage pattern includes accessing from different devices, and having the data saves somewhere externally accessible is crucial.
6. Undo. Have undo. You can completely forget about confirmation if you have undo. It's not trivial to implement, but man. Have undo :)
And congratulations, it's a cool product :)
BTW: grandparent, I'll look at that book as well, thanks :)
[Edit: formatting]
Ah, yes, good point. Also, FWIW, this was about 3 years ago.
I'm not a Google employee, but I once visited their Zürich office and was shown the nap room. Not only was it really cool, but there were several people using it (just after lunch).
There used to be those people in Brazil up until about 10 years ago. I haven't seen them in any airports there since.
Going on a tangent here, if they also assume this stance - meaning, they'll tell you everyone else's salaries - it can be quite interesting.
I can't quite find where I first saw this, but googling a bit brings up a few interesting example. For instance, http://99u.com/articles/15527/the-age-of-salary-transparency
Excellent reasoning :)
Source? I was about to donate to the Red Cross, so I'd like to hear more about this.
He does, right there in the section called "Who are your competitors?":
"Indirect competitors: (...), Google Docs, Dropbox, (...)"
Edit: BTW, he also mentions them in the video linked to near the top of the application.
So, how can I get the one with Slartibartfast's signature?
I assume they specifically mentioned it because it's an Australian website.
But upvote, because LOL :D
At first I thought so too as well, but then I started to wonder whether that was just an effect of the first film being black and white. This means that the trees don't stand out as much against the grey background as when they're shown in colour.
Well, you can always apply for a job there, study for your phone interviews, and get invited, plane ticket and all. Heck, you might even get a job out of it ;)
