It's the end of history. What could we possibly discover about a series of technologies that are already nearly 100 years old now?
I've heard people say that various things are "solved" now because of LLMs too -- programming included. This implies we've "solved" thinking. I'm worried about these sentiments.
The original recordings sound much better and more interesting to me. Way better. The AI generated versions sound slicker in some sense but... like the re-recorded versions of old hit songs from the 60s you hear at the grocery store sometimes. Technically the song is still there, but it blends in with the rest of the muzak.
I'm sorry to be so negative, it's great you're returning to the material after all these years, but the AI versions I've listened to all have the same smoothed-over quality that loses everything interesting and relatable to my ears in the original versions.

I really appreciate that (it seems to me) your goal is not to replace human tutors, but to raise the general baseline. You emphasize scaling, how does that work in practice if you're trying to target audiences who may not have access to devices that can run your program? What is your plan from the perspective of funding and resources to scale infrastructure as needed to support these audiences?
Edit: I also think of other learning systems like duolingo and the application of tablets and computers in schools which begin from good places, but I'm curious if you are studying these alternatives and what you have learned from them?
I really think your goals are great, and if you're starting your design of this system from research about effective learning methodologies and working backward from there rather than starting from AI and working backward from there that erodes a lot of my personal skepticism about a project like this. I hope you find a way to make this work.

Have you considered using an automated orchestration system to deliver literature that already exists? This example seems like an opportunity to introduce children to really thoughtful literature like Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking stories but I'm deeply skeptical that generating the stories with an LLM would inspire a similar experience.
Are there other examples of your platform from the perspective of a child using it? I think those are both interesting cases: 1) interactive feedback on a subject they are making an effort toward mastering, and 2) trying to deliver information when it seems relevant. I'd like to know more about how you are approaching these things and other aspects of the learning process.
Effective teaching isn't just about answering a child's question quickly, rather making the right move at the right moment. AI is also going to be an integral part shaping how this generation of kids learn to read and think, tackling this responsibly means getting the design right.

There's no way to formulate this as a set of rules or best practices, each decision has to be made in a universe of context, but I appreciated this discussion.
Something I like to do is funnel the desire to build for something I don't need right now into TODOs and even FIXMEs. Sometimes they just get deleted, but other times I'll come across an old TODO during refactoring and be able to pay down a bit of accumulated technical debt.
I use it as a session store for a computer music system. It has worked well for me as a way to read mutable (by any client) parameters during synthesis, clients will often read dozens of parameters during a block of computation (a relatively short window of time in the low milliseconds typically) without adding any noticeable overhead to the render time for each block.
Edit: I also tried using it for larger blobs of data (like audio) but ended up only storing a reference to shared memory for larger blocks, anything larger than IIRC 4k that can't be stored in a single node kills performance, but for small values it seems pretty great.

Drawing debt
Bandcamp seems to be somewhat overrun with this LLM spam. I became aware of it because there's an account impersonating me with an LLM-generated review of my music which is weirdly specific and surreal.
The purpose seems to be to drive traffic to an advertising marketplace website. All the impersonating sites link to the covers.pics website which has no root page, but serves various paths linked in these bandcamp spam pages.
I contacted bandcamp twice in the last two weeks about removing it, but I don't know if there are any humans left there. They just replaced the rest of their engineering team with AI yesterday according to a blog post by one of their former engineers.

I have a great face-saving exit plan for AI companies: follow anthropic's lead and pretend you're saving the world by not releasing anything to the public anymore. Then just quietly back away, go bankrupt and let us all eventually forget.
In a marketplace, this is theft. (Which, given this example is of a website for a for-profit product, seems appropriate.) In a community it's tradition. Building on traditions in a community (aka great artists steal) is different than trying to get yours in a marketplace. Art and community traditions aren't a competition until they are dragged into the marketplace.
...and "maiinstream" -- seeing glaring typos (easily caught by spellcheck) now makes me wonder: did they decide to leave them in (or add them explicitly) to signal they didn't use AI to write, or (the more paranoid option) did they tell the LLM to add a few typos...
I didn't get the sense this was LLM-written, but typo-signalling is... I donno a bit weird. Firefox is underlining some of the words as I write. I'm leaving "donno" unchanged even though it's flagging it as a misspelling but I suppose I'd still opt to fix something like "maiinstream" even at the risk of potentially seeming more LLM-ish!

Sleepbot is an old, legit indie streaming service. They've been around for a long time, I used to listen to some of the stations circa 20+ years ago because the selections were good, they'd often play music by my friends and other unknowns. This “thought” experiment although based on real “physical” objects can be treated as a simple mathematical object and so allows us to explore some of the consequences of this object or objects. That would be a handy thing to do. A workaround could be to have a raspberry pi or similar as your ssh access point to a local network via ngrok, with your main ngrok service running on another machine on the local network in screen or tmux. Then just ssh into the raspberry pi, connect to the machine running the main ngrok service, drop into the session and reconfigure as you like?

We write to share the sad news that Professor Emeritus Jon Appleton passed away on Sunday, January 30, in White River Junction, VT. The cause of death was leukemia.
Jon was a member of the Music Department from 1967 until 2009, retiring as the Arthur R. Virgin Professor of Music. A composer with broad interests in classical, folk, popular, and film music, he was best known as a pioneer in the field of electro-acoustic music. Jon founded Dartmouth's Bregman Electronic Music Studio in 1967, with support from President John G. Kemeny and Gerald Bregman '54. It was one of the first such studios at an American university, attracting many visiting composers from around the world, and it remains a hub of sonic experimentation today. In 1989, Jon founded the Music Department's Master's Program in Electroacoustic Music (now Digital Musics) with composer David Evan Jones. Close to 100 students have since graduated from the program.
In the 1970s, Jon collaborated with engineers Syd Alonso and Cameron Jones at the Thayer School of Engineering to develop the Synclavier, the first commercially-available digital musical instrument, which was widely used in film soundtracks and pop music albums of the 1980s, including Michael Jackson's Thriller, Paul Simon's Hearts and Bones, and Frank Zappa's Jazz from Hell. Jon released more than 20 albums of electronic music during his career, including Human Music (1970), a collaboration with jazz trumpeter and Dartmouth faculty member Don Cherry. In 2003 Jon was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States.
A longtime resident of Hartford, Vermont, Jon maintained friendships with many of his former students and colleagues. At the time of his death, he was editing his autobiography, titled "Human Music." His manuscripts, papers and recordings are archived at the Rauner Library and the Dartmouth Digital Library Program.

Computers are best as (extremely useful) tools alongside other processes, contexts and humans in the world.
I've been using computers for (mostly sound) art for a couple decades, and I completely understand this mentality.
It's a nice thing to try to step outside of it though: I think you'll find computers get a lot more exciting when you don't try to live inside them.

Legos; also the ender 3d printer. I had a nostalgic time putting the ender together. Felt like a lego set. That's not saying it was trivial (it challenged me) but that I trusted it every step of the way not because of previous experience, but because of the obvious well-designed aspects of the experience as I was putting it together. For example: I put on a part sloppily, and trying to attach anther part was the first real resistance I felt in the entire process -- physical that is, I had to study every page of the manual for a minute or two before even being able to figure out what the next step would need to be, but it was always clear after studying.
This happens to me all the time too. Seems to happen even when just muting / unmuting.
I had a very similar experience. IIRC I did 90 minute naps every 4 hours for a week. My first full night of sleep after a week of 90 minute naps felt like waking up after one really extremely long and weird day.
I'm finally reviving a little music label, mostly offline. Just mailed out the first batch of "catalogs" I printed at home (with an axidraw pen plotter, much fun to play with fluorescent inks and etc) to mostly friends and collaborators.

I just (more-or-less blindly, not grokking the actual math behind it) ported the yin algorithm from someone else's implementation this year and tau was defined as a range where tau min is samplerate / freq_max and tau max is samplerate / freq_min where freq_min and freq_max are the bounds of the detection algorithm, at least as I understood it. My port works but I never really understood tau (except as I described) -- if there's a way I can refactor this with a fixed tau that would be very interesting!
This looks really great, I'm looking forward to trying it out with my bandmates! (Who live in another state.)
That's an interesting approach. When I care to save every iteration of something I'm working on, I usually just put this functionality into the render script itself. For example something I was working on last year produced renders that were around 20 or 30 minutes long (I primarily work with audio) and I decided I wanted to save every permutation of the script as I worked on it, so I just added a few lines at the bottom to copy the script next to the render. A few hundred lines of python isn't a big deal to save when I'm already saving hours of audio renders.
I don't usually do this though... after 15+ years of doing generative audio work saving every iteration feels a little like hoarding.
