This guy had a simple, important idea and wouldn’t stop pushing until it was implemented. He probably saves hundreds of thousands of lives.

Given they’ve open sourced the model and their training techniques, shouldn’t it be pretty easy to get an order of magnitude estimate on if their training estimates are in the right ballpark?
Because they refurbished it and it’s back up after 40 years (we didn’t just suddenly communicate with extra terrestrials).
The amount of real engineering that must have gone into a system like this is incredible. They didn't have the benefit of being able to iterate on an existing technology -> this is real hacking.
Having worked on the streets dataset for a FAANG, I'm blown away at the ingenuity here.
These are uncannily on-point. Amazing how the model incorporates mostly unwritten, but often accurate subtext into these outputs.
Gsuite / Google for Work user?
There is a newly enforced limit on (paid!) Google Workspace accounts - you can only share files with non-Google users up to 5 times each calendar month. Note that this doesn't cap external accounts, just those that are non-Google. So want to share with your personal Gmail account - no problem. More than 5 @hotmails - nope!
Only way around is to upgrade to a plan that is double the price.
"Important: If you use a Google Workspace Business Starter or Frontline account, you can share files up to 5 times each calendar month with non-Google accounts. Each time is defined as sharing one document with one visitor."
Not sure who at Google thought this was the right way to upsell business accounts. Also, there is no mention of this limit in any plan description (eg. https://support.google.com/a/answer/6043385).
Feels like a shake-down.
I went through some of what you’re writing about: start-up, acquisition, handcuffs, sabbatical-mode, and now newco.
Feel free to email me, happy to chat it through.
"it was an industry that definitely could use some quality solutions."

How do I represent a differential equation?
There are two aspects here:
- being efficient with your time: not wasting time on distractions, keeping meetings short etc.
- knowing what to spend time on: doing the activities that will actually drive to your goals rather than feel like you are.
We called them and asked if we could come visit in person and learn more about their business. I think you’ll be surprised how open people are to help - especially if you’re curious and let them talk about themselves.
I'm the founder of a venture-backed company in my 30s with two young kids under five. My co-founder is also in the same boat. A few points:
1. My wife works in a well paying field (nothing crazy, but comfortable), and we were financially stable enough to be able to live without my salary for a couple years.
2. We were very customer focused from day one, even before we incorporated. We signed up several customers (using LOIs) with just a deck, before we wrote any software.
3. We discovered a very clearly defined problem, a payer and clear willingness to pay.
4. I don't work like I used to. I feel much wiser about how I spend my time rather than brute forcing it with hours. Because of the two kids, I effectively work 9-5, M-F. I don't work weekends. During 9-5 though, I am dialed-in (I don't spend time reading the news or checking instagram). I delegate much more aggressively than I used to. I don't think I'm actually outputting much less than I used to, I'm just more efficient and focus on the more important things.
5. Venture - this is what it's for. There is still a bunch of venture out there for seed/pre-seed. We raised money early on and that allowed us to take small salaries (and hire folks to delegate things to).
100% it's definitely not as easy to start up in this stage of life, but it's also not impossible. Happy to connect with folks who want to connect (commiserate?) about this situation.
Easy to move it back if I do want to convert back to fiat at a later date?
Being in product and engineering management for more than a decade, Linear is hands down the best tool I’ve used for ticketing. It would be hard for me to work somewhere if I wasn’t able to use it. Features are well designed, the tool is delightful to use and the design is world class. Also, there isn’t a tool I use that feels faster - it’s like they know what I’m about to click on before I do.

I'm (slightly) biased, but wanted to mention that Sid is an exceptional engineer, manager, and a pleasure to work with.
Second this, and not just for fashion. I went through amplify.LA at our geospatial analytics startup, Mapsense. The amplify folks were some of our best investors.

August Health is very well funded by a group of top tier Silicon Valley investors and is working with some of the largest senior care organizations in the Bay Area and across California. We’re on a mission to promote compassionate personal care for frail elders while transforming the way the industry operates. We’re helping communities move through a much needed digital transformation so that all resident care, operating information, and compliance risk are housed within the August Health platform rather than a notebook or file cabinet. That's one interpretation of this article, but the other is that we can't really build anything big in this country anymore because of red-tape, regulations, and competing government fiefdoms.
From the article: "They point with frustration and embarrassment to successes in countries around the globe — particularly China, which has built more than 20,000 miles of high-speed rail in about two decades."
Sure - nobody wants a $100B high speed rail line between Fresno and Merced. But why can't we build what everybody actually wants - a high speed rail between SF and LA with a reasonable price and timeline? This isn't an issue of engineering, it's an issue of management.

This site is another example.
Yeah, I even own some physical Stripe Press books. But it's definitely not core to payment processing.
Stripe Atlas has a better case for being useful: more companies -> more stripe users.
Stripe Press feels more like a passion project (which, to be clear, I think is awesome).
I was just using cnn as an example of a generic news website today.
I hadn't heard about Works in Progress before, but looks like incredibly well researched content. Pretty stark difference between the writing and what you see on something like sfgate.com or cnn.com.
I find it pretty awesome that the Stripe is successful enough to start branching out from core product into founder hobby areas. The cynical perspective is that this is not core to the product, but I find it kind of beautiful that the founders can do a bit of what is personally interesting to them with their company.
This reminds me of another incredible resource for deep learning articles: https://distill.pub/, which unfortunately looks like is going silent.
August Health | Frontend/Backend Engineers | Distributed team (USA-based) | Full-time
August Health is an early-stage company that builds technology to enhance quality of care for vulnerable older adults. We're looking for a few experienced engineers to join us, especially folks with several years of experience building and shipping complex, consumer-grade applications.
Our development team is a small group of capable engineers and we like to balance building thoughtfully with getting things shipped. The position offers the opportunity to deeply understand our problem space and channel compassion for the experiences of older adults into building a mission-driven, elegant, and intuitive product.
Technologies we use: Scala, Play Framework, Protobuf, Postgres. You don’t have to have experience in these, but the ability to pick them up.
Stuff we'd look for:
- 4+ years experience working shipping code in an engineering organization and familiarity with software development cycles
- Ability to thrive in a startup environment that’s full of ambiguity - experience balancing tradeoffs to make complex decisions where there is no ‘right’ answer
- Good communication and personal skills; ability to interact and work well with the team
- Interest in development of company culture and its reflection in our engineering practices
Our team of twelve has technical, healthcare and company-building backgrounds. We have prior experience at companies like Apple, Google, Landmark Health, and Adobe. Together, we’ve co-founded and exited multiple companies, managed large engineering and product teams, shipped features used by hundreds of millions of users, and led clinical teams supporting thousands of patients. We are very well funded by a group of top tier Silicon Valley investors and are working with some of the largest senior care organizations in the country.Feel free to email me at erez AT augusthealth.com to learn more.
