I've been working on ruby on rails since 1.2. I have linux servers at home and a business-class network setup. I've created docker containers from scratch and set up AWS Fargate and all the related services to run them and connect them to a public IP address.

There are a lot of people with similar experience, what makes me different is I'm interested in understanding how the entire company works, the industry it is in, and the people who make it happen.

- I was on the board of directors for furry convention for 3 years where I learned a lot about running a business.

- Learned a bit about accounting and Human Resources from relatives. I know how to spell HIPAA correctly. :)

- I've worked with E&S insurance, student loan origination, college resume processing, and European auto parts.

- I've worked directly with C-suite on high-visibility, long-term projects.

- I've learned a bit about B2B sales and customer relations by tagging along to an insurance conference.

I also think it's a great place to work.

The company has been around for a while and stayed committed to the principals they started with.

We’re a small team, all fully-remote, optimizing for sustainability. We get a lot done without people working weekends and burning themselves out. :)

We sell European auto parts to customers in the United States.

Looking for a QA engineer with Ruby on Rails experience.

A well-qualified candidate will have a working knowledge of automated testing frameworks such as Cucumber, experience with web development, creation and execution of test plans/cases, and experience working directly with project stakeholders.

This happens if you have full disk encryption enabled. If the laptop goes into hibernation, the disk is no longer mounted. So you need to enter your password to mount the drive which then drops you into the lock screen to enter your password again.

Ideally, the computer should be able to know you just woke the computer from hibernation and skip the second lock screen but I don't think the systems are integrated enough to do that right now. :)

Walmart Pay 11 years ago

I never go to Walmart because of this. I most of my shopping at Kroger and if I need something they don't have, I go to Target or Amazon.

Just look on what people are doing and find a way to do some parts of the process faster and better.

This requires buy-in from different parts of the company that are going to have their own opinions about how to do things. They can be surprising resistant to change.

Similarly is there a term for mutually interbreedable but distinct `species'?

It's species or subspecies. Animal classification has always been a little bit fuzzy and has some legacy cruft laying around. Like wolves, coyotes, and dogs are distinct animals with different behaviors but are definitely capable of interbreeding.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subspecies

For domestic animals, we have the noun breed, as in breed of dog.

A simple dot tattooed somewhere inconspicuous on the hand (make it look like a liver spot) would be enough to solve the problem.

I have the same issue as the doctor and this wouldn't help me. I know which hand I write with. (My right). I always know which hand is my right but I still can't tell right or left for directions. It gets flipped during processing like dyslexia.

There's plenty of safe ways to accomplish this kind of demonstration. The fact they choose to do so in a way that endangered the public is in fact criminal.

Being a security researcher or journalist doesn't give you a license to put the public in physical danger.

I am in a little traffic so I'm running late, but should be there at 5:20

I would phrase this as "Running late due to traffic, ETA 5:20" and this usually works. Siri seems to trip up on articles especially if you don't speak precisely. (And yes, this is extremely annoying)

This is going to sound a bit horrible...

Fixing the space issue will help more people than it hurts. People that have spaces at the beginning or end of their password can simply reset their password or call customer support. Users forget or mistype passwords all the time.

I'm willing to give the author a pass on the white-light issue since it is a legitimate problem for some people. But I don't expect amazon to ever address that problem.

There's always a group of people that can't use a given product because they have one issue or another. For example, the Kindle Voyage isn't accessible for a blind person.
