I can see this becoming transformative and superseding Excel, which is a bold claim to make. But this is compliant (with Excel), performant, extensible, free, and in-browser. This could easily become almost an emacs-level editor.

The core should be in rust, verfied in lean, and the runtime should be in guile. Literate programming in org-mode should be a hard requirement. Package management should require patch algebra. Macros should be submitted to a leaderboard in a blockchain and yield flair in EUDC. M-x measure-beard-length should require 10000 hours of logged usage and unlock the major mode infinity-categorization.

I reckon the C core of Emacs is some of the most battle-hardened code out there. Verification, a-la SEL4, is probably irrelevant but still nice. Guile is modern and performant but Elisp is still its own little joy. Literate programming is always nice until it gets in the way. Straight is good enough for me now. Macros are always cool and a leaderboard would be fun, but patch algebra is really nice, see jujutsu nowadays. And beard length is gendered and so only partially admissable. Infinity categories are way out there and always good for a reference.

I used to be an artist and then studied science. The first constitution I read was that of the USA, then that of Ireland. I've been reading law since. The decisions of judges are of variable quality and always susceptible to appeal, especially to autonomy. And the Law always falls apart in the face of the philosophy of freshmen, it's how we hold it together in the face of each other that makes it worthwhile.

Yes, and I'm an European. I don't think this is a matter of spirit or letter of Law, rather it is a matter of rigour or fluffy wooliness of thought.

I wish mathematicians spent more time educating legislators so the rest of us can think and communicate in peace and clarity.

Having worked in cancer hospitals at the age of 16 (35 years ago) and having a father a doctor who coordinated long term cancer treatment in our country, I can say that cancer treatment has come on in leaps and bounds. What was once a death sentence is now likely treatable, and more treatments are coming online almost by the day. We will never beat cancer as we will never beat death, but we can prolong life, prevent pain, and always make sickness easier to bear both for those who suffer it and their loved ones.

I reckon desktops have been dying for a long time, and I love me a good desktop.

After many years of enlightenment16 on underpowered (scavenged) computers KDE Plasma became my desktop of choice. It still is.

Nowadays it's a choice between a browser and an editor for all but multimedia editing and gaming. So emacs and firefox work really well. I still use a desktop environnment for convenient interface with system settings such as wifi networks, window placement, power management and the like, but otherwise KDE disappears into the background as it should.

But, as I explore the wonders of NixOS these settings are more and more becoming declaratively controlled by a simple collection of assci files, and it's wonderful. As soon as emacs becomes multithreaded I'm switching to EXWM. And then my desktop enviroment will be fully subsumed.

I reckon this combination will eventually become ubiquitous as everyone will become some kind of a programmer, and Richard Stallman will be proven correct.

Apple, Google, and Microsoft, will suddenly realise there is no lunch and everyone else will eat computation more happily and healthily. Though in the long run Guix will be more nutritious than NixOS.

The desktop metaphor will become a kind of ancient poetry we explore for semiotic curiosities as we forge new pathways for collaborative thinking.

And we will always deploy the lambda calculus on the Von Neumann architecture, even when quantum computing is ubiquitous, because we need metaphors, because computing will always be a kind of poetry.
