Waldo Photos | Senior Software Engineers | Full-Time | Austin, TX or REMOTE (Globally)

Waldo Photos (https://waldophotos.com/) is a photo finding platform utilizing facial and object recognition to empower consumers to toss their selfie sticks, put their phones back in their pockets and live in the moment. Waldo is the only platform that removes all of the friction in getting photos of you taken by others and creates new opportunities for photographers to market and sell their photos. Users can enjoy life’s most precious events and automatically receive images taken of them right on their phones or share images of others they’ve taken without having to lift a finger – whether between friends and family or a professional photographer.

We are enjoying tremendous growth in summer camps and private schools, where photos are already a common way to connect and share experiences of the children with their parents, but locating the photos of your child or loved one becomes a job itself. And while camps and schools have been the first areas that Waldo has gained traction, the challenge of matching and delivery of the photos you care about is luckily not limited to just summer camps and schools which is further driving our product and market growth.

To meet this demand we are hiring immediately(and through the year) for:

* Senior Backend Engineers : https://waldo-photos.workable.com/j/BE760CF400

* Senior Frontend Engineers : https://waldo-photos.workable.com/j/7038D86015

Our tech stack consists of predominantly of Python, Node, React, Redux, GraphQL, RabbitMQ, Postgres, Docker/Kubernetes and AWS.

Our team is globally distributed, remote first, and highly collaborative where we are united in the vision of delivering quality as well as joy to our users. As part of the team you can expect:

   * Autonomy, voice and empowerment to make an impact
   * Market Competitive Salary
   * Stock options
   * Unlimited vacation policy
   * Fully remote work environment with a flexible work schedule
   * Startup growth and energy
If this interests you or you have questions, please reach out to me via email using the address in my profile and I will be happy to answer anything or you can apply directly via the links above.

I will also be at the Data Day Texas conference in Austin on Jan 14th and would love to hook up with anyone there to talk further about the opportunity! Just drop me a line ahead of time.

StepOne, Inc (http://www.steponeinc.com) - Austin, TX - INTERN, FULLTIME

Come be employee #5 before we get to #18 by the end of the year! We have been in stealth mode and under the radar in Austin, but are going to grow in a big way fueled by determination, investment and, yes, even revenue(Redbull doesn't hurt either). We are looking for leaders to help us build out the future and this is the perfect opportunity for someone wanting to make a big splash for themselves.

We are a funded (http://www.liveoakvp.com/past-investment.html) SaaS company that is simplifying customer support through personalized help via machine learning(ML), natural language processing(NLP), effortless identity and analytics.

Our stack is Django/Python, Postgres, Redis, Angular and Salt, but are also looking to expand this as we expand the solution. We believe in constantly learning, so if you have any great ideas about new tools that we should be using then we will certainly listen. We are not quite continuous deployment(currently on weekly schedules), but are working towards that. We practice TDD, code reviews and believe in automating everything.

We are currently hiring for:

* Django/Python developers to help us build out some immense backend services as well as dabble in mounds of machine learning. You will have the opportunity to jump around to all aspects of the stack if you want or you can sink your teeth into areas such as large scale data pipelines, data analysis and visualizations, sentiment analysis of content through natural language processing, sub-second real-time highly dimensional recommender systems or an intelligent SLA bound context discovery engine. We also have REST APIs if you're into that kind of thing.

* Dev Ops engineer(Junior or Senior) to help us evolve our international multi-datacenter deployment and operations by helping to develop new internal tools alongside Salt Stack. You will have the opportunity to work with one of the first Salt Stack certified engineers(http://www.saltstack.com/salt-blog/first-ever-saltstack-cert...) on the team who is leading our direction and worldwide server domination. We don't have walls up between operations and development so this is a perfect role for those developers out there wanting to dip into DevOps or the DevOps engineers who like to stretch their development side as much as their operations side.

* Client side developers to help us build out both our worldwide mobile web application presence as well as our web based management tool. We leverage Backbone, Angular, SASS, Bootstrap and D3.js in our tool belts. You would have a strong role in defining the future for these applications as they are both in their early stages and are in strong need of a passionate developer who wants to build a critical piece of our solution from the ground up. In the next year you will also have the opportunity to build highly interactive data visualizations using D3.js to help bubble insights up out of both ad hoc data queries as well as offline analytics from the data streams from our systems as well as our large scale enterprise customers.

We offer the following:

* Competitive salaries

* Equity

* Health Insurance

* Equipment budget

* Flexible vacation schedule

* A flexible working schedule

* Education/conference opportunities

* A passionate team

* And more...

If you are interested, please send an email to erik@steponeinc.com and come help us build the next Austin success story!

StepOne, Inc (http://www.steponeinc.com) - Austin, TX - INTERN, FULLTIME, REMOTE OK

We are a funded (http://www.liveoakvp.com/past-investment.html) SaaS company that is simplifying customer support through machine learning(ML), natural language processing(NLP), effortless identity, personalization and analytics(Big Data). We are still in stealth mode but are getting ready to launch in the coming months and are getting ready to grow quickly as we are in the process of additional fund raising, so if you have an interest in any of these topics and want to make a real impact in how these problems are solved then we want to hear from you.

Our stack is Django/Python, Postgres, Redis, Angular and Salt, but are also looking to expand this as we expand the solution. We believe in, and have a strong interest in, constantly learning, so if you have any great ideas about new tools that we should be using then we will certainly listen. We are not quite continuous deployment(currently on weekly schedules), but are working towards that. We practice TDD, code reviews and believe in automating everything.

We are currently hiring for:

* Django/Python developers(both web stack as well as just strong Python developers to help with Backend services)

* Client side developers(UI/UX)

If you are interested, please send an email to erik@steponeinc.com

In my brief experience with Angular the difference is that while you can do "ui-keypress="{13:'keypressCallback($event)'}" that is more of the lazy way of doing things. The benefit of using the View and the way it should be used is in a declarative form such that someone looking at the View can know immediately that some element has some interactive behavior attached to it, but the proper way is to abstract it via a directive so that you don't pollute your view with the imperative details.

So, instead of using

<input "ui-keypress="{13:'keypressCallback($event)'}">

where keypressCallback does a form submit or something, you would write a directive that is just "form-submitter" and you would have your DOM be

<input form-submitter >

So that way you can easily scan your view to see what elements have what behaviors, but not how.

And Angular also allows you to bind events within javascript and really that is what the "form-submitter" directive in this example would be doing as well, but it should not be happening in general within the view/dom.

Although many times it is too heavy weight to make a directive for everything, but that is where the scope concepts of Angular comes in as well as the controllers so that at least the functions that are being triggered are still more expressive as they are localized to the containing scope. So, for instance you could have a directive "my-form" which is just an enhancement of the standard html form. In my directive I can then define a "validate()" method which validates the inputs. So, instead of having a "form-validator" directive I can instead do:

<my-form> <input type="text" >

  <button ng-click="validate()"/>
</my-form>

Because of the scoping rules of Angular it is generally easier to infer the behavior of the method that is being called as it is scoped to my-form and as long as you are playing by the best practices there is not any real concern for functionality within that method to leak outside of "my-form" thus maintaining the ability to look at the DOM and have a pretty good idea of what the application is doing without digging through javascript as well.

SEEKING FREELANCER - Prefer local in Austin, TX however we are willing to explore remote candidates as well

Looking for 2 contract Java Web Developers to help out immediately on specific projects with the possibility for more work beyond that. Experience desired:

* HTML/CSS/Javascript * ExtJS and also jQuery * Hibernate or some other ORM

I will say that I used to drink coke/sodas regularly and was consuming too much sugar and was in the same boat as you that water was not satisfying enough unless I just got done exercising. As other posters have said, this is your body adapting to your diet, but not in a good way. You can train your body to crave the good stuff and mostly intollerate the bad, but it is through slow, daily changes. Don't expect to just stop drinking soda and drinking water as you will start craving it and going back to it. Instead you need to slowly swap good for bad and over time you will naturally desire good choices which will help you avoid any damage you are doing while you are young which you will certainly pay for in the future.

I think most of us were invincible at one time, but we come to realize it is an illusion as we get older and your older self has to pay for it. Also, keep in mind that you really are what you eat, or from a programmer point of view, your results are only as good as your data(i.e. "Junk in, junk out"). Cokes and McChickens are just chemicals and preservatives.

I did the same as well after I got fed up with Windows bloat and, to your point, the way that windows is more for home users whereas I want it to get out of the way as well. And since I mostly use my box for coding, I also just got tired of working with Python on windows as well as consuming all of the developer tools as it is just natural on Linux/Ubuntu. Note that I don't do any gaming or anything.

My install experience was pretty flawless. I have moved 2 desktops and 3 laptops over to Ubuntu(10.4, 10.10 and 11.04) and have not had any real problems except for a 3d acceleration issue on a 10 year old ATI video card. Been going for about 6 months this way and really find it painful to work in Windows now.

This assumes though that you only have a single log. Often times I find breaking up logs based on concerns/packages/names or even level to be useful, which you could not do without reinventing the wheel of output filtering.

This also assumes that anyone is actually really reinventing the appenders as most frameworks already have a library of common appenders.

This is exactly what I do. I used to try to do it all at night, but with a wife and 2 kids you are just too drained to think and you end up making really bad decisions. I also tend to be able to plan when I am tired so I think about what I am going to do in the morning before I go to bed so that the second I wake up I am up and running and chomping at the bit to get at it. I also find that this carries over to the weekend too in that I can get in a couple hours before the kids are awake and then still have the rest of the day to play with them.

Both myself and my other technical partner switched to mornings and would never go back, this after having been a night person for 15 years.

Not quite to the MVP phase yet though unfortunately...but getting there!

Another huge benefit that the morning has over working in the evening is that you can drink coffee to get you going...if you're into that sort of thing.

Agreed. If only this had been around 7 years ago when I was first introduced to unicode and character encoding when trying to internationalize a C++ app. It took me forever to get my head wrapped around this idea as I were generally never forced to deal with the actual conversion and Strings were always just Strings. Even 7 years later this document completely cleared up the way I was thinking about it.
