Growing staples is the main failing of all these vertical farms, and they are just boutique-ish without that capability.

But if energy were free could we not grow staples vertically? We ARE on the cusp of that. And there is a lot of emphasis here.

Virtually free energy could come now, with present technology, anywhere on earth with Geothermal... if it was just invested in. (Requires upfront costs).

People LIKE to live on the edge. It is an unfortunate fact ... especially given their are 9B of us. Super bad for the ecology, the encountering of new diseases etc. Suburbs Exurbs, retreats... never ends. If we had a Home (like most animals) we would have to worry much less about despoliation and ravages like fires. Why not have a home to live in and allow ourselves rest, relaxation and recovery in an unspoiled wilderness??

NB forwarding does NOT include "spam" email... i have all my Gmail accounts funnel into one and i check the spam buckets of all, every 4 weeks (otherwise Google turfs em). i usually find a few (rather important) false positives in that monthly sweep.

Further note that gMail filters at every step, eg this includes a downstream "archive" account. So there are false positives coming from a "known" [single source] good account and of already vetted emails...

i do wish there was a way to forward everything ... where everything meant everything ... filtering optional.

Ah yes, "Bypass Paywalls" i do have this extension installed and have been using it for months. WSJ seems to have wizened to his workarounds, and others like the FB redirect. Eg it does not work for

In the meantime, AFAIK, there is no workaround for WSJ. Is it still OK to submit them to HN? i do notice there have been few recently.

So let's start testing aggressively for antibodies. Until we get that number, I'm all for extreme caution.

There is no Antibody/serological/immunity test yet. Biologically it is harder even that a vaccine... Test WILL be intensive/invasive (think blood, not mucus), much more so than a simple test for presence/absence of a particular virus.

With the current emergency caused by the corona virus there is a huge up tick in remote work. A whole sector of this suffers immensely from "Latency" issues. There is a huge market for the solution of that problem: Choral groups, various meditation practices involving a shared "soundscape", etc.

Perhaps a quick solution for the more professional groups with that issue is to require all members to have a "Land Line" and then do a conference call.

i think this especially goes for the English system vs metric measurements (though confusingly the English do not use the Imperial system, officially at least) Our brains are much better wired for binary systems like bushels and pecks rather than the French derived decimal system which is only good for studious things (like science) where you have of many orders of magnitude to keep track of regularly. Much easier to communicate/grasp half than 5/10ths.

Similarly the Sexagesimal notation, in common use (clocks etc), points to an generalization that would have been much better than the French system, where we rely on primes for increasing places in the number. Eg 4321(primal) would be 4x5 + 3x3 + 2x2 +1x1 = 34(decimal). Historically we may be stuck with counting on our fingers and toes though, through eternity.

The more "logical" Metric system which is not an extension of the "practical" Imperial system is inevitably bastardized and Creoled in everyday usage. Eg one buys a "Pound Plus" of Chocolate from Trader Joe's (500 grams!). Why is the choice is not one (or fice) Hectogram(s) vs one Kilogram i do not know... except that Hectogram is so obtuse/abstruse i had to google it! Maybe someone in a Metric country can correct me, if they think i am wrong using words like abstruse. One inevitably finds doubling and halving in everyday commerce.

We would do a lot better to extend to tripling, quintupling etc, like the Babylonians did, than directly to the (insane, in my opinion :-) French 10x Metric system.

Not that i am an American chauvinist. Eg i think the American middle endianistic dating system is off the wall weird, and i go out of my way to circumvent it.

If they used H2 (vs He) for buoyancy they could make (liquefied) H2 fuel very cost efficient: When you want to come down you are high up and it is cold! Perfect time to liquefy!

Making H2 gas is also subsidized on the production end, as Airship travel is cheaper than any other method, so making H2 has that cost advantage.

Safety is not an issue for transport. Human travel has that tradeoff though over He.

Same for me. Though i am very "advanced" having been a yogi for over 50 years. What really helped me was meditating hourly, on chimes. i have found the practice mentioned a few times, eg Thich Nat Han recommends. Content wise, length wise etc etc there are many variations. Pick one. Maybe graduate to another. Or out, or on infinite repeat. Taking control of yourself, at all times, even when not "meditating" is to be awake.

Eh, i skipped the whole 5" era - i guess i saw them as too fragile. i developed and wrote my dissertation on 8"ers (mostly the "newer" ones with a capacity of 1MB).

But i also, in that same endeavor, used a TTY for I/O and used its tape punch (by holding the tape still) to edit snippets.

Of course earlier i used to play sonnets on an IBM 1620 (which was free for use after midnight) with sorted decks of Holleriths. To edit them i would use the adjacent keypunch (also holding to edit).

Sounds like @benl has been afflicted with the "Cartesian wound". Such dualistic thinking and ideas like free will are ~hard for us to work through. But perhaps the more important, and immediately tractable, question @benl brings up is what our approach should be? Should we make an AGI or better IA, Intelligence Augmentation?
