Paying for sync is my way of supporting the developers of this excellent application. The sync works well, it's less hassle, and more secure than using the usual cloud services, particularly for iOS and Android. Obsidian and Tailscale are the two pieces of software I gladly pay for, I don't ever want them enshittified!

Now imagine that instead of an iPad, you've just bought a new house with fantastic materials and an integrated software system. Should the company that built it have the right to control how and who interacts with your house?

So they want to align the AI with corporate goals. At least they're being honest here. I want a personal assistant to summarize a page, remove all advertising and do a fact check. Can we have that?

In the light of the Google "moat" document, this would appear to a cynical attempt to monopolize the field before it gets going.

First paragraph of the docs - "Spack is a package management tool designed to support multiple versions and configurations of software on a wide variety of platforms and environments. So if movies use AI to help create characters they won't be able to claim copyright? I expect Hollywood studios will have something to say about this. With AI already being deeply integrated into DCC tools this stance isn't going to last long. And how will it be enforced if the artists don't show how they made the art?

I often wonder how much data they would have accumulated with Google Reader and Google Code that would now be a gold mine for training AI. Short sighted management!

Not sure that is strictly correct. I vaguely remember a command line browser early in the piece. The inline image ability and <img> tag came a bit later in the story when Andreessen put it into the NCSA's Mosaic browser. I've always wondered if it was that single thing that really made the web take off, more so than hyperlinking which had been around for quite a while. People like pretty pictures, especially advertisers.

So I've determined Einstein had the remarkable trait of mathematical and physical intuituon. Also Pavarotti had a remarkable ability to sing. Now all I have to do is copy them, sweet.

Really? I think the professional 3d software community would be surprised to hear this. Huge software suites with decades of opengl development.

The browser exists to interact with the world wide web, that is revolutionary.

I think this trend is seen in many areas, e.g. architecture and landscape design that looks and sounds great in a magazine but is actively hostile to humans. Products vying for the attention of a society obsessed with the latest shiny thing. Is Apple catering for the market, or creating the market?

Why are they wrong, and which one has a cure?

These employees are right to be worried. If Google becomes a defense contractor I'll be going out of my way to stop using their products. I'm not a pacifist, but I'll always choose to work for and patronize peaceful enterprises, it's as simple as that. I also influence lots of non-technical friends and family in their IT purchases and habits and I'll definitely be warning them off as well. So Google, be less greedy and make the world a better place for us all.
