I've always been surprised Kimi doesn't get more attention than it does. It's always stood out to me in terms of creativity, quality... has been my favorite model for awhile (but I'm far from an authority)

I'm pretty confident that if Ai gets good enough to actually take our jobs, it's going to be good enough to take at least 80% of all knowledge work jobs, if not 100%.

In which case everybody is in the same boat and we'll all be in it together.

I don't really believe software dev is uniquely at risk to AI.

The catch-22 I run into with AI coding help is always: it helps the most with problems I know how to solve. I feel like most engineers run into problems where we can't fully articulate the problem we're having (otherwise we would be able to fix it). In which case AI can be helpful, but more in a google way.

I hope they do check just for the sake of entertainment, but I can't imagine gold would be worth that much more if it was empty. I just googled and there's supposed to be about ~280 billion dollars of gold there. Which is a lot but I think there's about $12 trillion of gold in circulation

I'm sure this is just fan fiction, but you're saying some people think "DeepSeek has cracked something fundamental that we missed", and other people think they just stole everything? Any actual evidence one way or another?

They expected China to grow in a way that would lead to the "west" exerting much more control over China than they ended up with today. Basically they wanted more western-style capitalism, reduction of state control, etc...

Now China is very strong, and the west exerts very little influence

I think it's obvious that US lawmakers were somehow convinced ByteDance would absolutely divest from TikTok if threatened with an ultimatum. They were never prepared for an actual ban and the resulting fallout. Now that it's obvious they won't divest (which should have been obvious the entire time), they flipped

There is no Facebook in China for the same reason there will be no TikTok in the United States. Both Meta and ByteDance won't let another country run their business. Facebook was given the chance to operate in China if they complied with China's rules

Haha fair. But I don't think any company should be strong-armed by another nation into selling. Meta would never be allowed to sell their "Chinese arm" to a domestic Chinese entity...part of the reason there isn't one

From @kevinsxu on twitter:

Some interesting facts about DeepSeek:

- never received/sought outside funding (thus far)

- self-funded out of a hedge fund (called High-Flyer)

- entire AI team is reportedly recruited from within China, no one who's worked at a foreign company

- founder is classmates with the founder of DJI, both studied at Zhejiang University
