Exactly, datafusion is implied batteries included apache bigdata ecosystem. Polars is chasing the Python Pandas crowd and uses python syntax, handy if you're already comfortable with ipython.

RPI Pico is irrelevant in my view. Seriously checkout RISC-V equivalence (there are many, I like the ESP32-C3)

Linux on RISC-V is real, china is using & standardizing on it. Ditch arm, skip RPI, ignore STM-32, and scoff at TI, .. RISC-V is the future.

While you're at it - skip micropython, skip the OS Linux - use RUST and target RISC-V directly.

The cost of RISC-V is cheap and will only continue to plummet, nothing in the IOT space is going to compete with RISC-V except absurdly expensive niche proprietary solutions that were engineered before the blackhole-esque super-nova gravity hole that is RISC-V which is happening right now in the IOT space. I'm not even sure those will survive, ..

The RISC-V options are only going to continue to increase. I say this because China is using RISC-V for most of it's future everything, it's basically the national chip and there are literally tens of thousands of developers & engineers coming out of school into this ecosystem every single day.

Do not use micropython, avoid all these runtime debugging headaches. Yeah, it might take you a few months or even years to learn RUST, but the concurrency, the power saving, the deterministic behaviors - oh joy! The headaches you will save, the extra rest at night and reduced stress will increase your lifespan.

Qemu RISC-V for emulation + testing and you'll save yourself a ton of time only deploying and supporting code that works. Full simulated environments, you can test in parallel in the cloud, few platforms can do that! RISC-V + RUST it's a joy.

Fewer crashes in the field-- and let me tell ya! .. when you're doing anything IOT that is the only thing that matters - never having a crash in the field, that's better than chocolate cake.

Things to look for:

1. How much automata & does the founding team 'care' about technical best practices which will ultimately determine the operational cost of the systems & organization/ type of people to hire. (Do I want to work with the type of people the company is going to need to hire)

2. Do the co-founder(s) understand their market, do they have Realistic & Achievable plan, including visual 'mock ups' of any key behaviors of features, can they articulate the vision to me or will I have discretion on how to implement. I stay away from dubious social science, psychology, anything that is described as "the next xyz"

3. What is the equity structure being offered & compensation relative to the market opportunity (i.e. "how likely are we going to be an exit"). What is the market size, do we have customer #1 (and #2 .. etc.) in mind, a sales strategy, avoid a field of dreams "build it and they will come" mentality.

Fwiw, I have a horrible track record finding co-founders. I prefer odd # of person startups. I don't ever do 50/50 anymore, its always 49/51 or 49.99 and 50.01 whatever it's never 50/50 by contract. One person is 'the decider' I always offer them the 51 but that balance might flip in my favor if they don't deliver on mutually agreed achievable KPI's, sort of like side-bets, and this equity percentage can move a lot at the early stages but it keeps everybody focused. If feelings and egos are going to be bruised I'd rather find out early, if they are going to be greedy and try and screw me later I'd rather not engage at all.

k8s is the best solution for _universally_ bringing legacy pre-container "legacy" application patterns into a cloud. K8s won the battle (vs mesos, openshift) for a number of a reasons - but one of those reasons was absolutely not simplicity, rather k8s was better at handling the edge cases. This is a popular opinion held by Victor Farsick @ DevOps Paradox podcast and I happen to agree with him.

You are absolutely correct that k8s is not necessary for cloud-native environments. Existing comapnies usually have legacy applications, so they can't go "cloud native".

Once a company has started down the k8s path the org (by necessity) will start to specialize a k8s control layer and that will become embedded and you risk career-icide & being labelled a heretic if you try to challenge the rationality of using k8s. K8s creates a nice way sysops to keep devs in little boxes and limit the size of the craters they can make. All everybody wants at the end of the day is not to be hassled and not need to keep learning something new each day.

Dev's are usually horrible system operators since they fundamentally want to use code to solve problems rather than look for solutions others have built. K8s in this respect creates a very non-creative line of demarcation for system responsibilities. Devs should not be writing backup & logging applications.

If you're building a startup and you don't want the k8s complexity what you are suggesting is fine - but if you're going to work in big b0rg org, it's better to get in the k8s bandwagon - what you are saying will get you labelled a heretic, because the k8s admins have enough struggle keeping up with k8s complexity & beating devs into submission, the idea of learning anything else is unpopular.

It's straightforward to hire people with k8s expertise, but now this is a domain of knowledge that humanity has cultivated.

I remain of the unpopular opinion that k8s is really only suitable for companies which are the size of google (imho), the idea of having a massively complex & specialized administration layer for most companies is absolutely stupid. However the idea of refactoring legacy applications to be cloud native will never fly, too many risks & unknowns, disruption, big b0rg orgs dont want none of that.

So k8s is also a safe choice, it's not especially creative, it's burdensome but big b0rg orgs don't really care about any of that - these folks are unfortuantely the decision makers, and they don't understand the topics they are making decisions on, so popularity of tech, groupthink etc. are going to win there.

Finding a good assistant is rough, it requires patience, initiative & chemistry. Once you find 'the one' reward them, because a good assistant is like having a 3rd hemisphere to your own brain -- it sucks when you lose it.

Retooling for an assistant is the most important thing you will ever do for your company, it is what will ultimately allow you to perhaps grow or exit someday.

For new assistants - start them writing down your processes as an operations manual. Every day, they should be making updates and journal entries in the operations manual. The primary purpose of this is to see they can write in a way you can understand, if they can't do this - then fast fire.

If you find somebody who can write/edit/update -- Make sure they know "this role temporary, until it is permanent" and their role is to make themselves indispensable by anticipating your needs.

review your inbox, edit your documents, organize your calendar, and do research, follow up with clients, billing/collections, whatever tasks they can identify and offload from you.

A good assistant once fully trained will be 80% right, 20% wrong, .. you need to accept they aren't you - but eventually you'll both find how to make sure they do the 80% .. and defer/check with you for the other 80%.

A good assistant will write things down for your next assistant. We call this the "BUS" (or Tram) factor.

I know this seems cold & harsh, but having/updating an operations manual should be the first week of any new person as they are training.

you'll need some type of COO who will fill in other positions to find clients keep you all busy.

what types of projects have you done before? dealing with clients & getting paid while accurately estimating the time required to complete a task is an art.

(i can relate), you sound younger than me, so here is my life-hack tutorial I wish I could send to myself:

welcome to the life of the autodidact, sounds like you are well on the path towards being a polymath in a plurality of subjects. without formal degrees in subject matters people will NOT take you seriously, so it's best if you can connect with other people who are credentialed - there are several ways to do this, best case see if you can get your name on a few papers in the field(s) you are interested in. there might be conferences, reddits, or discords on subject matters that interest you - look for those to network. you will need to continue feeding your curiosity or you will probably become depressed. having a wife and kids, try to always put them first to be a good father! (note: i wasn't, and that scar doesn't fade - so kids are the priority once you've got them and you'll probably need to wait until they're off to college before you really get any free time to pursue your own interests).

someday, it's possible (although semi-unlikely) perhaps you might find or discover something that nobody else has figured out or bothered to do yet - but don't try create and do anything that requires a seed capital because few will understand wtf you are talking about most of the time and with no degree nobody will take you seriously making fund-raising an exercise in futility unless you literally get a patent - if you can build/demonstrate a prototype/mvp then it might be a different tune -- if you can sell/license something you make in the field, then you can pay yourself to pursue your passions and that's "living your best life" (where I am now) but until then you're probably going to be living a lonely life of solitude with regard to your academic pursuits. cheers.

i think the delivery mechanism for stem cell tech is sufficiently complex that it is reserved only for explicitly necessary procedures and regrettably by present day medical definitions that is 'urgently life threatening' so the idea of growing another kidney or whatever, unlikely. besides, it'll probably be easier to grow meat kidneys outside the body and then surgically implant them.

My understanding is that Mycelium mostly helps with nutrient motility, moving them across roots of the plants. Potentially increasing bioavailability.

Some Eukaryotes are also reported to my mycellial connection with the plant (i.e. merge with the plants) some sort of forest underweb sort of thing, but I think that would be very difficult to reproduce insitu. Eukaryotes are amazing but also so diverse they defy classification.

English is a funny language, the words chosen mean different things in each country's way of speaking. I'll try to describe based on my own experience:

A tourist is a person who shows up, stays at a hotel, frequently via the air-port or cruise ship. They don't really embrace the local culture aside from sight-seeing tourist type activities.

A Digital Nomad (DN) is almost like a tourist who lives in a country on a tourist visa - they don't open bank accounts, get national identity cards etc. They might rent an AirBNB and "live" in a country for a month or three at a time. It's not a vacation, it's a work/life 'hack', so they're in a foreign country but working (usually) in their host country. They are working in their host country living in another country.

Expat (Expatriate) is a "tax status", it refers to the money transfer .. somebody who is working abroad BUT is .. in their life-planning horizon expecting to return to their home, - they are like an indefinite tourist, they live & work in a host country, so not on vacation (has a job, place to live, permission to stay & work) .. but it's not actually indefinite. The host country doesn't expect them to stay forever and might even require them to leave periodically. An expat is I think always working or earning income in the host country, but ultimately sending the money back home country.

An immigrant is somebody who has left a place, and is going to stay at the new country indefinitely, they do not make any plans to return home (except to visit family), and perhaps they might want to bring their family to the new country. Their work status is irrelevant, they may not even have permission to work. An immigrant should have long term permission to stay in a country or they are considered a refugee, and may be expected leave, which is why being a refugee sucks so much. (I used to say I was an intellectual refugee from the US, but now that I understand how fucked life is for actual refugees I don't make that joke anymore)

Immigrants by my definition, the new place is their home, refugees are 'forced immigrants' from circumstances. Immigrants want to stay embrace the culture, social behaviors, blabla whereas an Expat is probably going to maintain more social identity & long term concern over how things are going "back home", also maintaining some identity or property, whereas an immigrant frequently would (at least in my mind) sell property, move assets to the new country/currency. Refugees on the other hand, they are staying in a country because it's unsafe to return.

I started as a DN, and now on the expat => immigrant spectrum.

cannabis can grow very fast in the right conditions. mushrooms can grow very fast in the right conditions.

so ... I suppose if you live in a place .. like Merica 70F/21c (or are you Liberian?) .. anyway, that 70F is 'golden temperature band' conducive to growing most anything. YES both species could co-exist without a lot of complication, neither will thrive, but neither will probably die. 70F - I think that's like Vista, CA. has the ideal 'most stable' temperature in the US. .. but real-estate is super expensive, so to have that you must live in a nice place, with good weather and blabla, "it's not farm-land", .. also if you need something you probably just order it from Amazon and it shows up a day later.

RE: Cannabis 'optimal yield' .. i.e. we both get the 'same' genetics, from the same bank, which of us could grow a better plant? The environmental conditions + light + soil motility (or hydro) all contribute to phenotype expression, not just life cycle, .. over the life, the air-flow rate for transpiration, light fluence, all those must be in balance -- MOST cannabis per it's name 'weed' is quite hardy, but you'll get different phenotype expression, if you have poor ventilation, o2 build-up (low co2), that can shock/stress the plant, it won't be as dense (i.e. if you are sea level vs. growing on a mountain) .. if you start changing it's environment you'll see the plant changes a lot, also using hormones, other approaches there are a lot of ways to boost yield (also, NEVER for example put Flower/Rose grow accelerate on your cannabis, it becomes cancer causing toxic when smoked! and this is why 'dark market' cannabis is so dangerous). Some cannabis growers buy industrial Co2 tanks and pipe that into their greenhouses, especially in places where they are limited to how many plants they can legally grow in a space, -- so it's known to use co2 helps to turn over bigger crops faster (the co2 comes from petroleum, and it makes me sick to think they're just dumping it into the atmosphere). I've seen growers using co2 do as many as ~6 full cycles per year (sort of like raising chickens indoors using lights).. so I wanted an organic source of Co2 from either brewing yeast and/or mushrooms! (NOTE: this is NOT cost competitive, petroleum based co2 is basically free)

Because .. MOST growers, most farmers in general are pretty lazy, and "don't mess with it" since plants have evolved over hundreds of millions of years to exist on earth in the present climate. Most* 'farmers' aren't scientists, they are inclined to let nature be nature and give up control of existential co-factors, beyond water, fertilizer, greenhouse structure. This is really easy, probably 'best' if you live in ideal climate zone, nature takes care of most of this for you -- I grew up in San Diego, CA. aside from water, the SoCal weather is extremely conducive to growing .. always 70F. US Farmers are often religious, and in this case, the religion is necessary because all they can do is pray for good weather, and (so I've been told) that seems to be working so far!

Alas, I do not live in Merica anymore, .. I'm an Expat! I (intentionally) live someplace else, and having left the US my prayers are no longer answered. I left the US because I don't want to live in an anocracy (failed democracy), and at this point, perhaps in my lifetime the US will collapse into civil war, and the subsequent religious state that would emerge, it's not someplace I want to live. I mostly blame Regan, but I do miss the weather in San Diego. Alas, I digress. My point is: praying for crops only seems to work in America, mostly where there is already good weather & therefore better churches.

Now, something most American's don't realize is that MOST of the people on the planet Earth, they live in a place where the weather is already unpleasant (I assume, because god hates non-Americas), and also mostly attributed to America, the non-American weather is only going to get worse (more extreme). Our ecosystem of plants & fungi - stuff that used to grow -- the truth is it already doesn't grow as well as it did for our grand-parents, and in the future, well who knows, .. indoor growing 'sheltered farming', controlling temperature, when it's all ~70F US (i.e. Los Angeles), farming there isn't hard, maybe the soil is bad,whaha, add some lime to break up your clay, then keep dumping yer high nitrogen fertilizer till it gets into your lakes & rivers .. or at least until we hit peak phosphorous and you can't buy/afford fertilizer .. that's maybe ~10-20 years but alas, I digress. American's don't realize how much easier agriculture is IN AMERICA (it's really got excellent climate, overall for it's size) .. again, this is attributed mostly to prayer & good weather from all the farmers praying.

But for me -- I presently live in a place that is known for it's extreme temperature & humidity, not uncommon to have a 10(c) flux in an hour, etc. We aren't religious here, or at least not extremely religious like America, and everybody gets to vote (or they pay a fine), and all the votes get counted, and everybody is really respectful to each-other despite being secular.

HOWEVER neither species we've discussed is presently legal where I am .. so as an foreigner, the punishments for being caught would be extremely unpleasant, bordering on "life destroying" (and ultimately I would be sent BACK to America). So everything must be stealth, covert, blabla, and it's even illegal to touch electrical wire unless I'm a licensed electrician out of over-zealous concern for fire. .. hint: as an immigrant, I'm not licensed to do anything. FML.

With agriculture being a biological process, it's innately a markov chain, each action, any discrete failure, impacts the rest of the chain, the organism gets stressed, it doesn't grow as well, maybe it fruits early, or not at all.

The /optimal/ growing conditions for cannabis & fungi are known to be different. Once the HVAC systems are interconnected between two systems, the number of variables which can grow horribly wrong, and where balancing one impacts the other. Add more factors, such as experimenting with different cultivation cycles & processes, etc. the combined system(s) doesn't lend itself to micro-scale 'experimentation', .. interconnecting the two systems in a way they can co-exist, in theory, simple, in practice, not as simple. In practice you need a lot of sensors, automation, climate buffer zones, and/or patience & dealing with disappointment.

fwiw - I am trying to figure out how to micro-scale & automate the control systems. So if anybody says "yeah, this is easy" please show me how. I am designing a system I would like to take to Mars colony (not interested in the moon) and I basically don't see how NASA or SpaceX can build a sustainable mars colony without using fungi/Eukaryotes.

Finally -- for those who made it to the bottom of this post. Fwiw mushrooms, i.e. oyster, reshi, can supposedly grow EXTREMELY FAST, like ~20x faster than 'normal' using high voltage stimulus, or potentially similar effects using cold-plasma) .. papers & studies, also look up 'fairy rings' where mushrooms grow in a circle after a lightning strike -- (this has been 'anecdotally' known for thousands of years).

I've struggled with this too. I was on study career-sabbatical travelling in Europe with my then-girlfriend/partner. She was banned from US entry by Trump exec. order and we came to her home of Australia (I'm from the USA) in March 2020 -- we stayed because it was obvious Trump & fam were treating the pandemic as a way to further profit from dubious science, dividing people & pandering. Down under (Melbourne) we've had some of the most strict quarantine lockdowns of any place in the world -- I like it here and now I can't imagine returning to the USA -- but accepting my network in US is mostly toast. Making new friend during a pandemic is really hard.

The timing for the rapid transition to remote work globally wasn't great. I don't think it will be like this forever (but it might take a decade to sort out). Companies weren't ready, and grey-haired CEO, peter-principal IT leaders & HR departments weren't technically equipped for the transition. Most companies (globally) still relied heavily on email & jira + meetings instead of chat, IT was an expense but not seen as "the core of the business" pre-pandemic. Few companies had transitioned to 'remote-first' & 'async culture' pre-pandemic (mostly only bay area startups do this imho). Async culture(s) suggest remote employees get together 'virtually' for coffee or beer and gives them discussion points - did any of your employers do that? I know most didn't.

Other people have told me you shouldn't go to work to make friends, be mentored, get free sushi lunches, you should go there to work blabla. Also making friends @work is NOT the responsibility of your employer (and imho it is certainly not a priority at a startup who should be product focused!!!) -- unless the company highlights & promises that vibe during the recruiting.

Covid/remote work came during a global period of divisive social misery & wealth inequality creating a lot of cognitive dissonance for anybody paying attention. When you think of "digital social network" which company more than any other 'owns' that space? Facebook. And while I won't put all the blame on Zuck - because I know Russia FSB has a legion of trolls & bot-nets manipulating the platform too. The fact society can't use our Internet's "social network" really failed spectacularly. Facebook and it's related platforms are mentally toxic. FB/meta is algorithmically optimized to make you angry, isolated, pissed off & alienated (just like Fox News) because it suits Zucks & Putin's long term power narrative(s)! Zuck is in my view a fool -- not dumb, but incredibly foolish to have squandered such a responsibility & good-will entrusted to him.

So for this pandemic - as long as meta/facebook is the defacto global "social network", i.e. zuckerberg et. al is the primary party responsible for connecting us 'digitally' with friends, family & peers blabla. yeah we're all sort of isolated & socially fcked mate.

We know now* that Zuck isn't interested in (y)our mental health or making us better. Zuck isn't interested in bringing families together, preventing teen suicide, or even disseminating the truth. Zuck is a horrible person and I would happily kick him in the groin on behalf of humanity if given the opportunity so he could (if only for a moment) share humanities collective pain and perhaps even "feel something" akin to desiring compassion. The pandemic would have been a lot easier (socially) if there was a critical mass alternative to Facebook. I heard Trump launched his own platform today -- maybe there is an opportunity for another alternative which focused on mental health & positive news, and living your best life during the pandemic.

Nah, just kidding .. I don't really wonder how Trump's new social media platform will do that. Trying to finding people online when the primary company which runs the social networks is facebook - consider perhaps it's better to be isolated during the pandemic.

How I cope: Study & learn whatever you want unfettered, humanity has been writing stuff for ~5,000 years now, there's a lot to read (and it's all online woot!!) We live in such a cool age for geeks. You sound technically competent -- it's a shame you don't realize what a hidden blessing this is. I've found a lot of the technical chat rooms on Matrix.org to be 'my people' (it's more like IRC) .. you might look there for whatever online social interaction with people smarter than you. mentoring, etc.

First, talk your librarian since they often can do intra-library loans if the book exists in a library system within their network.

You can make a request for specific collection additions especially if you explain how bad their approach is. A standard library is going to need to keep books for 20+ years, and tech books just can't work that way -- many libraries just give up, especially on emergent technologies & cost vs. demand -- and that will be their "we can't", but that's a false assertion!

A libraries most popular books will get checked out hundreds of times (high turnover) and so they try to stay within those domains, but they also pride themselves on having a comprehensive collection.

College libraries on the other hand usually have copies of textbooks in those topics you might be interested in.

Depends on the libraries budget, the bigger the city the more they can afford to equip a specialized a branch. Some libraries in wealthy countries have community makerspaces, 3d printers & fabrication tools you can check-out and so you might talk to your librarian and see if they are interested in a tech hub (sometimes there are grants they can apply for to get this equipment).

I got my library to start carrying video games when I was a kid, I later went back and helped them start offering free public Internet access (i'm old)

I.e. Libraries find it difficult to stay current with new technology and rely on their patrons helping them. Reference librarians are a special class of amazing people.

100% of libraries have a form to request books, anybody can fill that out. I'd suggest one more step - request an appointment with the head librarian (not somebody on the floor, but somebody who is in a senior administrative position) and make a case. You'll probably unwittingly help some under privileged kids or homeless people gain useful skills & capabilities.

Librarians dislike tech support, they don't want to become genius bars and technology is hard for them -- there are ways to resolve that with online communities and whatnot. See if you can find a younger "next-generation" librarian who can evangelize the idea with you.

Failing all that ..

Online knowledge systems such as OReilly etc where you pay one price, get full access. I also really like the Udemy, etc. online video series and the ability to time-shift & consume those classes, patreon channels.

Failing that z-lib.org is an amazing place to grab e-books if you just want to browse the content quickly. ;-)

Plz don't disparage Rust evangelism!

Rust is awesome. yes it is complex, frequently annoying, easy to learn difficult to master. I'm speaking from a 30 year dev career.

a few months ago I intended to do a quick investigation into RUST to validate my "i really don't need to learn this" specifically for an embedded project. Within a few hours I found I had become a zealot. Rust has too many "omg, i should tell everybody about this" behaviors that I can't even find my favorite aspect yet.

It's equivalent to a lost soul finding Christianity and accepting the lords blessing and forgiveness! The weight that is lifted of being forgiven to your sins resulting == no more guilt, it's all forgiven! immediately reduction of cognitive dissonance. in this example with rust, it's pointer tracking and memory management, but it's basically the same thing. Rust is for the pious developer.

Those people who are still using C++ for fresh starts are the same folks who love to do things the hard & wrong way, or at least those who don't know any better, infidels, unwashed heathen.

okta passport is such garbage. it's an absolute steaming pile of garbage sold to unwitting enterprise clients who can't identify bad technology.

why do i say this? At least as of Oct 2021 Okta didn't even have a complete compositional API to setup accounts -- thus requiring a 'josh-api', literally a guy named josh to manually provision new customer accounts by hand. the latency on those api requests was immense.

the company i was working at still depended on java 8, never budgeted time for refactor or maintenance, and had a plurality of other horrible dev practices they justified (calling themselves agile, devops, but not actually doing any of those things properly)

i was still in my probationary period when told me they were going to roll out Okta to all clients early in 2022 and charge for SSO so they could line their pockets, i gave my notice the next day (for many reasons, including okta). josh also gave notice and left on the same day.

Truffles are an entirely different species. Ultimately life is (mostly) electrochemistry, but the circumstances (such as nitrogen fixing bacterium) and other circumstances which happen within a field are notoriously difficult to synthesize in a laboratory setting.

I was a well regarded SRE/devops programmer & network, cybersec type person.

I saved enough $$$ living minimally to principally retire in 2014 at age 37. I did some digital nomad travel (47 countries) and unicorn chasing (criteria: no opportunities smaller than 9 zeros AND must leave the planet better than I found it). I also took 6 months to walk from Mexico to Canada along the pacific crest trail, and backpacking across Europe & Asia.

I've been doing super-learning self-paced studies in a variety of fields including Chinese ODM, electronics engineering, advanced math w/artificial intelligence, and a heap of experiments in agriculture-tech.

Today I'm going to write Elon Musk's private family office and explain exactly how to solve world hunger this decade for way less than $6bn.

I've tried to do this, with partners and failed. Finding all the people with all the skills you need to get a prototype finished, LET ALONE a field-deployable-serviceable prototype at any level of "interesting scale" is absurdly complex and multi-facted.

In the US most research is targeted as selling things to the military. You might be better in Australia or any other country which offers more social funding for these types of things.
