We're hiring an Analytics Engineer to help power our future. This is a really greenfield project where we need to define the data models that fuel all reporting, analytics, and ML/AI going forward. We do 'freight audit' - we save our clients money by making sure all their logistics spend is correct and as agreed.

At Trax, our data infrastructure is in the middle of a real transformation. We're building the data foundation that will power our next wave of AI features, and we need someone who can own that work end-to-end. This isn't a "run queries and make charts" role.

You'll be:

- Designing and maintaining data marts in dbt + Snowflake

- Building customer-facing dashboards that integrate into our platform

- Bridging the gap between engineering, business ops, and client teams

- Running ad-hoc analyses that drive real decisions

- Shaping how our data platform evolves alongside our AI/ML capabilities

I had a similar thought about 3D printing - particularly extruding mathematically defined shapes in vase mode.

In both of these cases, mathematically generating the points to visit (in gcode) is needed, and we don't care about constant speed - the firmware handles the instruction->motion part.

I am thinking about non-planar printing mostly, but this could also apply to CNC finishing passes.

OpenSCAD is great for functional parts, built of basic components. It can start to be good for moderate complexity components with the BOSL library (I use BOSL2) including chamfers/fillets where needed. And the parametric/customization aspect is second to none - IF it's built with that in mind.

Where it really falls down is when you need to somehow get data OUT of the model to feed to other shapes. I would love to be able to specify a chamfer or fillet along a contact edge of two other shapes, but unless you know the exact contact shape, location, and size a priori you will have a tough time getting anything to line up. If you want to use a mesh or model as a negative, every model's zero coordinate needs to be just right or it will just be entirely misaligned.

I've also tried to spend some time performance optimizing for render/output. It is not cooperative at all. It will just soak CPU time for a minute at a time for not even a complex shape! As pseudosudoer said, it really goes off the rails.

But for functional connectors, adapters, and replicating parts, it's great to be able to leverage my software skills in 3D modeling!

Judging from a recent thing I watched[1] ... ~1.5 mins per nail (as of the 8.5 hr + 352 nail mark), while streaming and talking.

That would bring it down to only ~7 years of labor if we call it 1 min per nail, assuming that you're already working from prepared bar stock. Still a significant expenditure of skilled labor!

This is exciting. I am an architect in a startup that has long valued bringing humans in the loop for the moments when only humans can do the work. The key thing missing between the potential seen in the last couple years of LLM-based fervor and realizing actual value for us has been the notion of control and oversight. Here's an example of what I'm talking about: suppose you and a housemate decide that an equitable split for the electric bill is 65/35 based on usage habits. One person pays the electric bill every month. All of these finance apps will download the transaction, categorize the electric bill for me, and maybe apply a custom tag. But I have to manually calculate the amount owed to me, and manually reconcile that with the fact that the other person pays the water bill.

I'd love to find an accounting app for shared arrangements, but it seems like most are targeted to solo or completely joint finances. Monarch listed elsewhere in these comments is the closest I've seen, but it also doesn't support reconciling split transactions.

Any recommendations for a privacy-focused app that can handle transaction splitting in ways other than 50/50? Or tracking accounts from multiple people in a household?

Every app I've tried this is painful or unsupported.

I'm at 50% delivered for my year-long subscription, one of which I had to specifically request through their support site. These delivery issues are the key thing that has prevented me from extending my subscription or buying Prime for other people.

I use tmux-resurrect for this exact reason. Between that and Chrome's session restore I end up in an OK state after a reboot.

Wow, I am definitely the target for this. I often have tmux panes watching fast-scrolling log files while trying to continue to work in another pane. I've been trying to tweak tmux to perform better, but it really is the rendering speed that's holding it back.

The lack of scrollback/tabs/etc doesn't bother me at all - I use tmux for this exactly as suggested.

I rarely hear the alternative explanation that speaks most to me: marriage as an institution is currently a segregated privilege. I do not want to participate, lest I lend it some small sliver of legitimacy.

Where are the articles talking about the people who don't get married because they no longer need a plausible cover for their sexuality? Or because they are creating loving non-traditional families? Or those like me who empathize with those who are disallowed from participating?

Any benchmarks or anecdata about how this performs with millions of 'paths'? What about data larger than memory?

Also, you mention difficulties with changing RRD settings, like time intervals. How does this handle similar config migration?

I've recently been involved in RRD replacement as well for the same reasons you cite in the article. Our technology choice was OpenTSDB. How does YAWNDB stack up? (Granted, OpenTSDB is in another category of deployment complexity.)

Slightly OT: If you ever happen to be in Oklahoma City, the American Pigeon Museum[0] is a nice diversion - larger than you'd think, and lots of interesting tidbits to be had, including history on the passenger pigeon. I saw it in passing on an unrelated trip, but it turned into the best story to tell from OKC.

We made a similar decision - evaluated many, chose nvd3.js. It needed a new custom chart definition, but it has been responding well for our use case (enterprise monitoring software).

This is excellent - I was looking for similar functionality just recently in the Windows networking system. I look forward to seeing what the paid features are!

Here's my minor feature request (I'm sure you'll get a hundred or so today) - how about a config setting to turn on an automatic virus scan of the executable on first network activity? I imagine this would not be enabled by default for performance reasons, but I'd like to run it this way for a few days before reverting to default settings.
