There was a very thorough understanding of the theoretical harm, as there is with AI. Harm from the Trinity test was not shown until after Japan, again having parallels with AI considering we don't yet know the long-term harms that may occur due to existing, less powerful models. Would you mind sharing your contention instead of just telling me you googled something?

My argument is also pretty clearly not that pedantic. I'm saying there was obviously going to be harm by the detonation of a nuclear weapon, but it wasn't technically shown until it was actually detonated. I'm saying the same thing is true of AI. You can disagree, but it's not _that_ ridiculous to compare the two.

I've been watching the behind the scenes stuff from the LotR extended editions. The Weta Workshop people were true craftsmen and women, dedicated and creative and really inspiring. Now I'm imagining two people just prompting a machine over and over and to be honest it's a really sad vision of a sad, boring future. Give me hippies carving Treebeard out of polystyrene over AI generated digital perfection any day.

That could all very well be true, but in that case it feels like most Republican lawmakers have arrived at the right conclusion by accident.

Permanent measures should be taken very, very seriously and there should be thorough investigation into long term outcomes. This is not at all what the Republicans care about. They aren't doing this because they care about the health of vulnerable kids. They just don't like trans people.

I can't remember the last time I came up with the majority of my scene ideas and beats and character arcs and world stuff independently of actually writing the first draft. I dunno, maybe getting GPT to spit out a draft and then editing it would have the same effect. But I kinda think writing prose is the thing that distinguishes a writer from a person with an idea. I'm not sure I want to read a story someone coaxed out of an LLM. I want to read the words they wrote at 3am when they finally, finally got that chapter or dialogue or whatever to work.

Love the notes/research/et cetera idea though. That's totally different and would be a real game changer.

This is what most people making "I'm not worried" arguments don't understand. Right now, it makes you way more productive. Even if its capabilities stalled right there, it will over time reduce the value of your labour. But it won't stall.
