The economic/social situation of people force them into these jobs. Just ignoring this and accepting it as reality is ridiculous. This can be said of any of such social behaviours. In some cultures, the violence on women is countered by the logic that they were wearing certain kind of dress and nobody is forcing them to do this etc ..

There are certain values in society that we should try to fight for. They may seem idealistic in current perspective, but nevertheless we should strive for them to make progress inch by inch. Brushing them off under the pretext of "nobody forced them" is not right.

Thanks. Yes, that's the link. Joe is one of those teachers, who try to simplify the concepts while preserving the elegance of what is described. Kind of like minimalistic simplicity in teaching. While teaching, every time he would emphasise the intuition behind them. He avoids the complex formula's/algebra, calling them ugly ... and often presents one line proofs to them !!. After getting through the first few of lectures, you seem to get the underlying trend in his approach. That all the complexity is just hand waving over the the simplicity of underlying concepts. (Sometimes i think if the maths is complex to explain a phenomenon then we are not using the correct theory to explain it. But i am not a mathematician .... )

Last year, i saw the videos by 3Blue1Brown and inspired by it went on to read some of the standard text books like linear algebra application by Strang. I had seen the Strang videos earlier but somehow did not follow it through. This time however my perspective was changed. I was approaching the subject through the lens of intuition and simplicity. Wherever i found something challenging, i waited for the next day to again re-do it (because i know that this should not be that complex to understand or the understanding is wrong). And to my surprise, again and again, the difficulty was in my rigidness in understanding. The next day , or even later during the day, when my mind was fresh again, i can reason through the concept and get the intuition behind it.

Since then i have seen the Strang videos again and again. Beginning to end. Read the book chapter by chapter and exercises by exercise. And what a delight it had been. And then i jumped upon Joe Blitzstein's probability lectures. What a blast ! Is there a list of teachers like these there, who in the pretext of teaching algebra/probability etc are in reality wiring up our thinking process in ways immaterial to subject they are teaching. Many of us don't want the material to be too casual/layman terms (which hampers self understanding as its no challenging anything within us) and not too rigid (where we cannot break through the challenge).

I think I did some of my best work when assigned a desk essentially in a corridor ... .. but the worst of all for me is emotional noise e.g. people bickering. Trapped in a small office with unpleasant people ..

There lies the problem. If its some unrelated people discussing stuff that doesn't interest us then its just background noise and get filtered out. But in office space it is exactly the opposite. You sit around with people who are doing similar work and most often what they discuss is directly or indirectly related to you/your-work. This is a problem.

Another thing i notice is that concentration is multi stage process. Sometimes when you are between something then its easy to get into the zone. But at times when doing some meta thinking, analysing where your thought process is correct or when trying to get grasp over a difficult problem, where again you have do analyse your thinking, it requires conscious effort to stay focused. If the environment is conducive then it becomes that much easier.

Sense perception can be used for survival and pleasure. In the game of evolution the latter will get phase out and former will evolve. However in short term, where there is a great economic incentive to game the "pleasure seeking senses" for creating wants and consumption, there would be short term pain and confusion in masses. The question to ask ourself is that whether i succumb to this enticement or just move and let it meet its eventual end.

Country, companies are higher order concepts that lasts over generation. This lets them experiment over many people life and adjust accordingly. But we as an individual we have limited time and space constraint. Its only our mind that can help distinguish the chaff from grain and live a meaningful life.

There is already a big trend of automation albeit on the IT side and not on development. Where it used to take a separate IT team and developers and DB admins etc there is growing field of devOps with automation. Companies, especially startups are biting into this trend and vendors, especially Cloud vendors are spearheading this movement.

If there is glare of possibility of automating the development, these vendors and companies would have been all over it. This behaviour is not seen, means that this a possibility that exists in distant future.

The opportunity/better-living delta between big cities and other smaller ones have risen a lot over decades and centuries. There is much greater affordability of food, healthcare, basic education and better employment. But with the rise in population there limits on housing. Everyone wants a piece of same pie and there are economic consequences of that.

The next big disruption would be to break this trend. Use technology with a social/political movement to get the benefit of affordable food, healthcare, education and employment while living in non urban areas.

Its childish to compare rich and successful people like that. There had been and will be in future more rich and successful people measured by revenue, profit, employees, product reach etc.

This sort of comparison is a silly thing, a hero worship kind of behaviour un-characteristic of HN. However people still want something to compare. How about instead of just being capital etc add some other measures like business risk, turning around from absolute failure, fighting david and goliath in same industry, building something that was just given up by all etc . Again these measures are subjective and there could be somebody else who may like building a steady growth or being more charitable and equitable etc.

We like to see the world and measure it up in the way its important to us. When somebody says X is the greatest person, then realise that he is measuring with the qualities he finds important.

How about gov do quantitative easing for these student loans. Basically provide contracts and various incentives for companies that are employing these students who have loans. Also to various vendors like house owners etc who provide service to these students. This would create a negative impact on students who did not took loans or got good jobs and paid up in time etc. But that's how largely it was done for QE also.

Well one difference is that Gautama was an atheist. That makes it different almost all other major religions. Another difference is that he kept on emphasising on practice and self experience (to improve one's life) than theory/intellectual-discussion and blind belief. Also self observing and believing only that much which one experiences himself and take it step by step. This is unlike asking someone to just believe and accept something as a fact.

There was no one ordained by him or any religion proclaimed by him on his name. Around his words later there is a whole religion of buddhism that came up with many different kind of practices and rituals. You could follow none of that (this religion and its rituals) and just live by the principles by which Gautam Buddha "lived" himself and could have a better life.

Its a big leap to jump from a centralised social network to a truly distributed self hosted network. The missing link seems to be the semi-central ones, like having few central hosts which allow users to flow between them. Get the protocol to evolve and user adoption to happen on this and subsequently allow anyone to plugin their self hosted server, if they want to and still allow full network discovery across the hosts all over world.

This is the problem in expressing your thoughts and feelings with words. The readers would extrapolate the words over all sort of things, rather than the essence to which those words were spoken. Its as if the speaker and his rational is subordinate to the various interpretations of those words.

The essence here is that a family here feels obligated to provide a better world for their newborn child. They are using all the means at their disposal for this. And the best part is that instead of keeping it to themselves, they proclaim it the world so that others can even judge on their promises. There are lots of point of views around the thoughts:

- He did not invent anything

- He had privileged background, education and luck

- He takes extreme risk but has background to fall upon etc etc ... So he is not great or a hero.

The fact of matter is that he has a personality and attitude for getting things done. He dreams of something, faces extreme challenges but still pursues it and gets it done. What matters is this attitude of never giving up. The extreme odds against which the person fights, makes him stand apart. But people with similar attitude, fighting against extreme odds can be found in all walks of life. Whether we find that narrative interesting or not depends on "our" background/interest etc.

Example could be someone with no means for basic education and learns on his own to become a great mathematician(or a architect who turns desert into greenfield) or someone who becomes a great artist/sportsman/writer(basically excellence in anything) against extreme odds.

I bet people with this kind of attitude don't care whether you find them heroic or not. The may even not care to read things like this. Fighting on this (whether its heroic or not) is just silly. Some people will find the story of single mother, working multiple jobs to provide for her family more heroic. But then that's good for them and does not steal the fact that Elon musk is hero for lot of us.

No. The purpose of convertible note is avoid that kind of valuation in % of the company. It is very difficult to arrive at a share % valuation of early stage startups and convertible note solves this problem. Its like a loan given to the company which is converted to equity during Series A round when the company is more mature and its easy to arrive at a valuation

In the original article BTV does a 40 Million pre money valuation. Lets assume the share price is 10$.

- Peter gets 20% discount : so for him the shares at at 8$ per share

- his valuation cap is $5 million: so for him the share price is ( $8 per share / ( 40M/5M ) ) = $1 per share

- He gets (1M / 1) = 1M shares for company (In comparison, the series A round investor (BTV) invested $10 Million. So they also get 1 Million shares.)

- Since the current valuation is $10 per share, his shares are worth (1M * 10) 10Million
