I think this makes it simplistic- as an entrepreneur running a growing startup I HATED my failures. I previously ran a startup that didn't make it and I was miserable for a long time...it's hard to accept defeat.

In the digital ecosystem we celebrate failure because if you've never failed, you've never tried. You have to be willing to take the risk and put yourself out there.

The best entrepreneurs I know have also failed- it is very, very rare to hit a homerun the first time out. The article says maybe we should celebrate completing something but a failure is that- a failure to complete the plans for the startup. You didn't complete it, you failed.

And once you fail you can either give up and go back to corporate America with its fake veil of security or you can brush yourself off and start over

Exactly- When I wrote this, I couldn't believe Sarah Lacy sent a 19 year old to pass judgement on Chicago in a short visit. Personally, I admire Trevor's guts- it isn't easy to do what he did but yes, he is taking a beating and right ly so in some regards. Saying everyone in Chicago works 9 to 5 in startups is beyond ludicrous....lol.

All that said, if he can keep his head on straight, he'll likely develop into a great writer

Based on what you are saying, i think you should still speak to a therapist- they can help you think through problems you have. First you said other issues, now financial.

You obviously have a lot happening in your head- you need to be able to sort it out and think clearly- this is what therapists are for. I'm serious- this is the move to take. Talk to someone- they won't solve your problem but they will help you talk through it and oftentimes that is what you need to figure it out yourself

I mean this sincerely- you need professional help. Don't make any drastic decisions until you speak to someone that can help you.

Your school should have healthcare resources available to you at no cost- you should start there.

Just call them up and say you'd like to schedule an appointment with a therapist. You don't need to say why- that's between you and the therapist- there is NOTHING wrong with seeing a therapist- oftentimes just being able to air your problems to a confidential source can be very liberating.

Please do talk to a professional- you'll feel better, I swear!

That is a fair assertion- but, a perfect example for me is the online app picnik (picnik.com)that is going away because the team joined big G+

If Google offered to buy my startup, I'd likely sell too....MAYBE. But I wish there wa s away for these apps people fall in love with to live on after their creators leave

BTW, the first event you do is always the hardest- remember Michael Arrington had the first TecCrunch meetups in his backyard. Provide a quality event regardless of size and build on its success for your next one

Saying, "If SF is a better environment for startups the cost of living should be a small trade off" doesn't work.

Everything depends on your personal situation. If you are launching a startup, LAUNCH IT. You don't need to be in SF.

If you want to live where the center of the startup universe is, if you want to not be able to swing a dead cat around your head without hitting another entrepreneur, if you like it 60-65 degrees almost every day of the year, SF is the place for you.

You don't NEED to be in SF to launch a startup unless your service/product is narrowly defined as SF residents using it. Plenty of startups move to the Bay Area when they need funding- but...you can always visit and check it out yourself.

I'd say, launch your startup now. That is key- forward momentum.

And I really do love it there- If you don't have any commitments holding you back- move there and check it out. You'll love it (although it isn't as warm as SoCal)

You can do that anywhere- do you need capital? Then yes, SF has more (and easier) sources to find for capital. But really if I were you I'd build the thing first- you can always move later if you have to.

The biggest thing about building a startup is GET STARTED :)

Oh for a variety of reasons- cost of living being one. Chicago is expensive- San Francisco is REALLY expensive. haha. Although East bay is affordable

When you say you are considering moving, "for better opportunities in the startup world," what opportunities? Are you looking for a job? Starting your own company?

San Francisco & the Bay Area exist at the center of the Startup universe. It's just the way it is.

I have lived in San Francisco and now live in Chicago and run my own startup- but NorCal is definitely the best place on Earth to be. There are other great places- but IMO the best is still Northern California
