I run a Reddit Post Automation tool called Delay for Reddit: https://www.delayforreddit.com

The tech stack is:

- Ruby on Rails

- Postgres

- Redis

- Hosted on Heroku

I choose this stack because it was the technologies I was most familiar. Also, I knew it could solve the problems the business faced.

I do not think Tech Stack is the most important component to my success. Its important to choose a Stack which can solve the business's problems first and second having familiarity with the technology can make you more agile.

Spending time on SEO, marketing and advertising is where I can attribute most of my success.

I think part of the problem is that you are not the target audience of the chatbot. For the past year, I've run Intercom on a small saas app (https://www.delayforreddit.com) and I get great feedback from end-users. They love to be able to reach out to me on any page rather than hunting for a support email. A large component of the problem is that many sites overuse Intercom and don't realize how it impacts their end user experience.

I created https://www.pullchecklist.com, a Github tool that surfaces contextually relevant checklists for Pull Requests. I built it to scratch an itch of a common problem at work. Some of the member of my team were tired of manually checking Github checklists because they were not relevant to the PR they were reviewing. This tool layers conditional logic on top of Github's checklist functionality.

I felt the way you did a few years ago. There are a couple ways to navigate around this type of block. First, try to connect with the customers/end-users of your code. Receiving positive or negative feedback is a great way to become more engaged with your work. Knowing that you make someone's life better can imbue your work with more meaning. Second, if you are interested in a profitable side business approach your side projects with monetization in mind. Learning something outside programming but tangentially related has helped me stay interested in my day job. Researching the depth and breath of the space (competitors, CPC for popular keywords, payment processing) can be very stimulating. Two years ago I started https://www.delayforreddit.com and its been a great way for me to explore a side business and work towards fulltime self-employment.

This is a very interesting idea and something I am questioning at the startup I'm currently working for (~50 engineers). I don't think the idea of software quality and time to market are diametrically opposite ideas. I'm the tech lead of an infrastructure team and we have been focusing on refactoring some of the most egregious code. After completing a few of these projects, my team has noticed that the development speed of some of the teams interfacing with our refactored code have seen improvement. Small projects with 5 day estimates are completing in 3 days and engineers are not as frustrated at the state of the codebase.

I understand that time to market can sometimes be a differentiator and its acceptable to build a quick and dirty MVP. Version one of a startup's codebase is going to be messy because you are constantly making tradeoffs to survive. Once the startup leaves crunch mode, engineering leadership should be allocating at least 10% of engineering time to refactoring. Otherwise the bloated, unstructured codebase could be holding the organization back from building the next market defining feature in time to beat the competition.

"Your goal, as a hiring manager, is to find the people who want to invest in their careers, who are aiming for mastery and not just looking to make more money or build a shiny resume."

Why are these two concepts mutually exclusive? Experience, money, and mastery are just a few of the side effects of a successful career.

Initially, I thought Cucumber was going to change testing because it would allow Business Analysts, Stakeholders and other interested non-technical individuals to read the tests. Experience taught me that these types of abstraction layers get relegated to lower skilled "programmers" because the non-technical individuals don't want to "write the business logic" because its still very code-like.
