fwiw acquihire means fb gets your investors some money back and you get a decent offer when Craigslist sues you and things go south. as car search is not particularly relevant to social media, we were pretty happy to turn over the IP to Ark as another Cal grad search company and can't wait to see what they do with it.

oh yeah, this has nothing to do with what you should buy - we just built the tool after a few beers this weekend because it seemed like it would be cool to easily visualize every car for sale in SF... hope its enjoyable!

also - we are building a comprehensive recommendation engine for the top 50-100 models by collecting everything from EPA & NHTSA safety data to style awards and max lifetime mileage. this is probably a month out and has required getting pretty creative about crawling a number of heterogeneous data sources

We used hireArt to screen writers and got a ton of really good responses. the site still needs some work in automating the work sample process and I think we need to societally normalize/figure out the trial process (how do you build trust that I'm not looking for freebie work) but the premise is good - I'm done hiring people on the faith that they wont turn in complete shit. ::cough cough:: elance.

Data was across the US. I tried looking for regional trends (price variation, etc), but at least at the state/major metropolitan area level price and availability distributions were surprisingly homogeneous. I'm hoping to deep dive later in more detail, but for saving money there didn't seem to be much on the regional front worth reporting. Thanks for reading!

hm, not sure how we'd add exclusion to the search. do you find any of the price/mileage filters useful or do you really just want to be able to say "No Hyundai" (or whatever)?

I think we'd also like to add some basic recommendation engine type stuff soon - my last car was a $500 tercel so feel you on the ubercheap classification. If we had a "Sort by Cheapest Reliable" option would that be useful?
