Outside of the decades long trend of overly bright headlights, I've noticed a more recent uptick of drivers seemingly deliberately leaving their high beams on full time. Not sure if it's "keeping up with the Joneses" or just people with older headlights that can't see them over the bright ones, but I'm blinded by at least one car with clear brights on every night drive recently

I will say, while there's now more overly bright headlights of varying degrees of blinding, it's better then when every truck started buying HID headlights and putting them in normal headlight housings. Felt like there was a period of time where headlights were either the normal tone, or a super bright light hitting you from all directions

This post is very timely, as I got the itch to setup and play simtower literally last week.

I used dosbox to install Windows 3.1, then installed simtower in that. It's not the native window manager integration you'd get in wine, but worked very well. Some ui glitches but nothing that affected usability.

Worth noting I'm running Linux

KDE uses Phabricator, or at least did the last time I contributed. Worked pretty well in the collaboration aspect for submitting a change, getting code owners to review and giving feedback. I was able to jump in as a brand new contributor and get a change merged. The kind of change that would have been a PR from a fork in GitHub.

However I got the distinct feeling the whole stack would not fit as well into an enterprise environment, nor would the tooling around it work well for devs on Windows machines that just want to get commits out there. It's a perfect fit for that kind of project but I don't think it would be a great GitHub replacement for an enterprise shop that doesn't have software as it's core business

Yeah carry on got the stupid liquid ban that's still around, but I don't think much if anything got banned from checked luggage after 9/11. Just the standard stuff like batteries and other things that could have issues in an unpressurized non temperature controlled hold.

Even carry on got a lot better than it used to be in the days right after that. Like I'm pretty sure they had banned lighters for a bit (and a lot of people assume they still are) but they're explicitly allowed and I throw mine right into the scanner bin every time I fly. Not even being able to carry in a sealed bottle of water and having to take your shoes off is stupid, but about the extent of what's left. No more keeping all liquids (what even counts as a liquid?) in a ziplock bag and having to take it out, and even laptops can stay in with the new scanners they're rolling out

I've carried on an inflatable life vest with an active CO2 cartridge and that's also listed as fine. Though it did get flagged and secondary screened because it was in my bag, even though they don't say you have to leave it out.

In general the more you fly if you pay attention, you can pretty much know what will trigger it if you put it in your bag. Metal water bottle in the bag? Your bag is getting pulled, every time. I've even told them right where to look lol. Left out and it goes right through.

Really both of those models show 60% as about the limit to where you're still effectively at the baseline for latency. 80% is just about the limit to where you're up there in the exponential rise, any higher and things become unusable.

0-60 and you're still at minimum latency. 60-80 you're at twice the latency but it's probably worth the cost savings of the extra compute density since it's still pretty low. Higher than 80 and things are already slowing down and getting exponentially worse by the request

Like skydiving? Too bad, it costs us in heath care dollars, so we have to ban it. Competitive sports? Can't justify the cost. Oh and of COURSE you can't have free choice in your diet and libations. People make unhealthy choices and it costs all of us, so your choices will be made for you.

It won't go all the way there day one, probably won't go there fully in the end, but the effect will be real. Just look at how every aspect of our freedom was restricted over COVID, with the justification that your choices "impact other people".

"Single payer" really just means "no choice, and no competition". I wouldn't really expect things to get better under such a system, and worse it would put a much larger percentage of our freedom on the chopping block.

Just look at the all the stuff they pulled over COVID. It would usher in a terrible era where everything you do is free for someone else to say no to, because "we all pay for that".

I give it 10 years under such a system until we have a similar supreme Court ruling to the one we got for interstate trade. Except this time blowing out their scope of power to anything and everything, with no more limits
