I come back to the video every once in a while and it is total zen.

I was into woodworking, then I got into building fly fishing rods from bamboo.

Fly fishing has been around for a long time. They used to build rods by hand out of bamboo - a specific species of bamboo native to southern China - before factories started making them out of graphite, fiberglass, etc. for cheap.

Modern fly rods are a few hundred bucks. If you try to buy a bamboo rod in a store, they run $2K-$5K. They take a lot of time and meticulous work to build, and the result is a functional work of art.

Woodworking is a ton of fun, and challenging. Bamboo rod making is a niche within a niche, and there are not a whole lot of people who still do it ... mostly retired guys with a lot of time. It's a great tradition, and it's about as far away from computers and technology as I can get.

I didn't even know how to fly fish until I built my first bamboo rod.

Digg may have a bot problem but Reddit isn't far behind. So many subreddits are full of slop that they've become useless and/ or completely unreliable.

What's an actual viable solution to this kind of thing?

CATPCHAs aren't it. Maybe micro-fees to actually post things would discourage bot posting? I really don't know.

Seems like it's just dead internet all over the place these days.

Right now the page says Copilot and Actions are affected but I can't even push anything to a repo from the CLI.

I would so very much love to see GitHub switch gears from building stuff like Copilot etc and focus on availability

Why not just use the mobile app? It has Claude Code built in. Maybe I'm an unsophisticated idiot but it works well for me. Some shortcomings with repo management but other than that, CC mobile seems ... fine

Absolutely not.

500-1000ms is borderline acceptable.

Sub-300ms is closer to SOTA.

2000ms or more means people will hang up.

Thank you. I'm not doing any marketing at all. In fact I noticed about a third of the traffic comes from ChatGPT of all places. I guess that's just from the SEO. But users keep trying it out, maybe because it's really simple to start. Just call the number.

Just a call a number and practice a cold call with a bot. People seemed to like it when I built it so I made a free and paid tier. Getting like 3-5 new users per day without really doing anything.

Not accurate. You are probably looking at a site like https://libgen.ac/ which states clearly at the top: "Not a Part of Library Genesis. ex libgen.io, libgen.org"

This is relatable. Once one gets over the frustration of failing and making mistakes (thousands of times in some cases), it becomes fun and easier to stay curious.

$155 seems like a lot. I do this with a $5 pi zero and a $5 adapter and it works flawlessly.

I am, and yes, it has been a productivity boon for me. Although I have discovered much more effective tools, like Claude Sonnet 3.5. Even though there is a lot of chatter lately in r/claudeai about Claude being 'lobotomized', I can't say I've seen the same thing. I'd originally relied on Copilot and ChatGPT, but went to Meta.AI and then Claude. Claude has consistently allowed me to create and manage actual useful projects, and it was better by a mile.

It's still tedious to keep Claude Projects up to date, but it seems to be able to generate some actually decent and usable code. Claude helped me build a fairly complex app (https://instantaiphone.com) and get it set up on a server - trying to piece something like this together with Copilot or ChatGPT was MUCH more challenging. I am not super surprised at the conspiracy theories about a new model coming out that would necessitate Anthropic 'lobotomizing' its current model but that take does seem kind of cynical. Yes exactly!

It's not perfect, but it's tolerable, and not unlike some real-world calls where there's a slight delay. There are some "Hmm ..." and "well ..." scripted in as well to make it feels natural if there is a long response.

The cold call sales part can be replaced to suit any need. I had another version that was just a generic AI (no sales stuff). I found myself on walks frequently ringing up the chatbot ("Hey siri, call ChatGPT") and just asking it whatever is on my mind. "Tell me about Ghengis Khan" or "where's a good place to catch trout in north Georgia" or "how do I make baked ziti". Makes the walks go by super quickly.
