We make sure public money is well invested by building software for governments. We're doing to government software services what challenger banks did to banking.

Our clients are mainly governmental research institutions - we're building tools for scientists to process & visualise data, HPC data processing libraries, web apps to make people's working lives easier, and DevOps pipelines.

Currently hiring a senior python dev, a mid-level python dev, and a senior rust/c++ dev.

We do government work so the location requirement is strict. Save yourself some time and don't apply if you're outside the EU.

Ambue | Software Engineers | REMOTE (UK only) | https://www.ambue.com

Ambue is an Oxford-based startup developing technology to help people make their homes energy efficient. We've part of an accelerator with the Energy Systems Catapult and we're backed by the UK government.

20% of CO2 emissions come from domestic property and >£65b will need to be spent upgrading properties to meet the UK's Net Zero targets. The government have multiple financial incentives available, but we've got a data problem: people don't know which upgrades to make, they don't know how to access finance, and they don't know how to find trusted tradespeople.

We help homeowners collect property data and combine it with our own data to create an accurate energy loss model. We identify the best retrofit solutions for their home and help them through the upgrade process.

We're looking to work with creative software engineers who care about the environment, want to make a difference, and are happy working independently.

We have two rolls to fill:

- Elixir + Phoenix Liveview (full-stack)

- Unreal Engine or Unity

By coincidence there are a couple of other Erlang autoformatters under development at the moment:

- rebar3_fmt: https://github.com/AdRoll/rebar3_format - offers lots of config options, as opposed to steamroller which has very few.

- erlfmt: don't think this has been released yet. It's designed to (probably) only change whitespace, as opposed to steamroller which makes minor code improvements.

An exciting time for Erlang developer tools!

SEEKING WORK | Remote (based in UK) | Data-intensive Systems

---

I'm a technical consultant and software developer specialising in data-intensive systems and data processing libraries. I've delivered work for large inter-governmental organisations and early-stage startups.

Recently I've been putting together a small team to take on larger projects.

We build fault-tolerant, high-uptime, concurrent, distributed systems. We build libraries to clean and transform messy real-world data to get it ready for analysis. We don't mind getting our hands dirty with legacy code.

There are testimonials from clients and descriptions of past work on our website.

Favourite tech: Erlang/Elixir, C/C++, Python, Golang

Personally I think if you're looking to attract developers with strong potential you're off by a factor of approx. 2 - even for fresh developers with no experience. Perhaps I'm not accounting properly for the added value of flexible hours and no commute, as these have been standard for me recently.

This website [0] gives the 10th percentile for Graduate Web Developers UK-wide as £21,250 putting you firmly at the bottom end of the scale.

I don't want to be rude, but I think you're going to have a hard time attracting any developers with an £18k salary. Are there any perks people should be aware of to make up for the low pay?

Where are you getting 13% from?

If you pay yourself a salary from a ltd company there's ~14% Employers NI, 12%-2% Employee NI Depending on tax band, 20-40% Income tax depending on tax band. If you pay a dividend there's 19% Corporation tax plus 7.5%-32.5% Dividend tax.

So 46%-56% tax on salary and 26.5%-51.5% tax on dividends. Nowhere near 13%, unless you're talking about 'creative accounting' by running non-business expenses through the company to effectively get them tax free.

Old Reliable | Software Developer | Full-time | Remote (UK Applicants ONLY) | £50-80k + Bonus | https://oldreliable.tech

Old Reliable is a remote-first software consultancy and development house working in the climate change space. We're a startup working with large inter-governmental organisations to do our part towards climate change mitigation and adaptation.

We offer flexible working in a laid-back environment. You’ll manage yourself and be responsible for the delivery of a project from start to finish. You’ll need to be open to learning & applying new technologies and not afraid of figuring things out as you go. You’ll probably be working on a new project every few months.

Currently recruiting:

- C++ Developer familiar with cmake & C++ best practices

- Expert Javascript developer: someone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty sorting out some old JQuery

- Backend Developer: a generalist with expertise using Java, C++, Python, SQL, Bash, and Linux. A little Fortran wouldn't go amiss, but certainly isn't a hard requirement. An interest in space & physics is a plus!

Old Reliable | Software Engineer | Full-time | REMOTE (UK)

Old Reliable is a remote-first software consultancy & development house based in the UK. We’re a young, ambitious company but we’re focussed more on having a sustainable work-life balance than on slaving away until midnight 6 (or 7!) days a week.

We offer flexible working in a laid-back environment. You’ll manage yourself and be responsible for the delivery of a project from start to finish. You’ll need to be open to learning & applying new technologies. You’ll probably be working on a new project every few months.

At this point we’re not asking for a specific skillset. The projects we’ll be able to take on in the future will depend on your abilities and interests. To date we’ve worked on C/C++ and build systems (cmake, assorted CI systems, conda-forge) so if you have experience in the area, that would be a plus.

We are strongly against the idea that remote workers should earn more or less money depending on where they live. The value you add to a company doesn’t depend on your cost of living. If you want to earn a London salary without having to live in London, let’s talk.
