YC Portfolio Stats 12 years ago

Quote from the about page (http://www.ycombinator.com/about/) ...

"At Y Combinator, our goal is to get you through the first phase. This usually means: get you to the point where you’ve built something impressive enough to raise money on a larger scale. Then we can introduce you to later stage investors—or occasionally even acquirers."

YC Portfolio Stats 12 years ago

YC's goal is to help startups take first baby steps and raise money on a larger scale.

So most important stat is what % of companies do that. Based on your data it seems (76 + XYZ) out of 716 where XYZ is companies out of 121 exits who raised more money prior to exit.

It'd be interesting to know based on cohort (batch) analysis if YC is getting better in achieving its goal or not.

It'd also be interesting to know where YC stands on this compared to other comparable accelerators/incubators.

Dividend amount is usually based on extra cash generated by a company. However, lower margin does not directly translate to less cash generated by the company.

This might impact startup fundraising trajectory. Investors may prefer to wait out for 3 weeks if VC partner's investment is a strong enough signal for them.

No, it does not mean only build for iOS onwards.

It means give primary focus to iOS7 in terms of performance, UI, design idioms, usage of underlying technologies etc….

It means don't build apps targeting prior iOS and just reply upon backward compatibility of iOS7. Use iOS7 as your main target OS.

In 90s, technical founders were able to launch startups successfully if they were technically strong. Getting designer was not top priority at the time. So everyone focused on having strong technical teams.

Eventually, people figured out that having someone with design skills early on your team can provide huge competitive advantage to your startup against tech only competitors. And today designer's role is very prominent in startup world.

Now all startups have technical and designing strengths on their team from day one, what do you need to stay one step ahead of the crowd ?

I have a feeling that code-wizard + design-guru team won't be good enough in near future.

People do care about privacy if they are given fair choice.

When choices are between

1) FREE (in small print, give up privacy) vs 2) Pay $X (and protect privacy)

FREE overwhelmingly influences the choice.

However, if you find a market where all competitor directly charge comparable prices to consumers for the product and choices are

A) Pay $x and enjoy the product vs B) Pay $x, give up privacy and enjoy the product as well ads

then it'd be interesting if option B) would gain significant traction.

Trick is to find a balance in the process so that author of an App is legally identifiable. This is to avoid episodes like "Fake Angry Bird App" and "Fake Mobile Banking App".

IMO, when I download ETrade App on my smartphone, it is good to know that someone checked that it was submitted by someone who is from ETrade really. If the process is rigorous for E*Trade, so be it. But as an end user I'd prefer it to be that way instead of making it _my_ responsible to verify before installing the app.

Now a days, compiler writers sees zero reason to write inline assembly.

First of all, it throws a wrench in high level optimizer's analysis. Plus, compilers and processors are getting smarter day by day while inline assembly in shipping code becomes more and more untouchable everyday.

From the article quoted above ...

"... Apple was already one of the hottest tech firms in the country. Everyone in the Valley wanted a piece of it. So Jobs proposed a deal: he would allow Xerox to buy a hundred thousand shares of his company for a million dollars—its highly anticipated I.P.O. was just a year away—if parc would “open its kimono.” ... "

I don't think either party had any delusion about the purpose of the "meeting".

Isn't labeling a marketer as "growth hacker - someone focused on creating scalable growth by manipulating and measuring each aspect of the customer funnel" is same as labeling a programmer as "bug squasher - someone focused on establishing a project with consistently very low open bugs reports by manipulating and measuring each aspect of software quality control" ?
