I like the website, although it wasn't the easiest to read on my iPhone 11. I don't speak German, but if I were to speak like this I imagine it would be understandable but maybe I would sound like a little kid or something - that's the toughest thing with conlanging interlangs, they make tons of sense but natural languages carry a lot of tone and nuance in their grammar.

I always found that even at startups we had to at least integrate with legacy solutions.

I had to do this once and, while I do recommend the experience for professional growth, it was not fun for the most part!

My friends and I joke about moving back to our home town to be together, possibly on the same block, mostly because of how cheap it would be. Truth is I have a lot of childhood and frankly recent trauma there and would never want to move back. Thankfully over time we’ve all seemed to be coincidentally landing in the same metro area over the years so we see each other a lot and it’s been a great way to bounce back from COVID.

At an old job I read a fiction series based on a suggestion from my manager but that's because we liked the same type of books, absolutely was not expected to be read to join the "in" crowd. If anything, we were the "out" crowd!

I am not an accountant nor a lawyer but my hunch is that to engage with US companies from abroad you would either need to be transferred or apply for a job at an entity in the EU representing that employer or you would need to operate as a 1099 contractor (self employment).

1099 in EU may not be so bad, you would most likely still need to pay for access to national healthcare but it would be cheaper than US insurance. You will need to report your taxes with both the US and your country of residence, but there is a foreign income exclusion available that would make it so you didn't actually pay any taxes to the US besides what your employer owes. Again, not an expert, you might look into this further with your own research or consult a CPA that has experience working with Digital Nomads or citizen contractors working abroad.

I agree that a balance needs to be struck and something needs to be done, but I'd favor a healthy cadence for my team than have them burn out and quit, leaving me holding the bag.

What I've found in my experience is I started putting up boundaries instead of being a "yes" man and those I've worked with have responded pretty positively to it. Most of the time they're just trying to figure out their own emergencies so as long as they have something to tell their boss it's cool – "We won't be able to meet with xyz until Thursday since they have limited resources" "Okay, update us on what happens Thursday then".

I'm (re)learning French this year and I'll check out this app, looks cool.

It seems many newer language apps are starting to focus on the "comprehensible input" method touted by language learning influencers like Steve Kauffmann, and at least for me it's definitely working. Comprehensible input (video content, books) along with weekly practice on iTalki has absolutely skyrocketed my language learning progress and really I only put in ~5hrs a week. Lots of money in the post-covid market for language learning as it was a hobby a lot of people picked up in quarantine.

Anyone else notice Netlfix also being laggy and shows crashing consistently in these past few months? I've pretty much stopped watching it in favor of HBO's streaming platform.

We did consider that, but we plan on taking enough enough weekend trips and trips to parents in rural areas that it may be too frequent to rent for each longer trip.

I use my Kia Soul like a truck sometimes, I've hauled around a push lawn mower plus tools as well as large music equipment, just laid canvas down in the back. Very useful. It makes sense that a hatchback vs. a cube car shape you would lose that vertical space.

Great point. Do you know how much the size compares to a Kia Soul? We love our Soul for it's utility and size in an urban setting but for obvious theft-related reasons we don't want to own it for too long. :)

I think this is a very balanced take. Your point on checking to see if the gas engine will charge the EV battery is really important to keep in mind and I'll make sure I do that.

These maps seem to illuminate that I may have underestimated how much charging networks have grown, looks promising! Looks like at least most hotels offer some form of charging. Your anecdote about your friend though definitely drives home that range anxiety for me.

Genuine question, not wanting to start a flamewar, how is this any different then products like GameShark? Is the only difference between Gameshark's success and this mod device the current legal climate? Pretty harsh sentence for tinkering with a hardware device users own, but maybe I'm missing the nuance since this group seems to have been selling the devices for profit, or maybe even modified Nintendo Switch units.

In my experience as a self-taught programmer who switched careers to software, the first 3-4 years not much time at all to spend with family and friends. After that period you reach a plateau of sorts, the top of the bell curve, where you are "caught up" to traditionally taught peers. The mandatory time spent learning drops significantly and anything new becomes optional since the fundamentals are now ingrained. That's the point where you can take it easy and spend time with loved ones and pursue other hobbies. That 3-4 years is a sacrifice to raise one's earning potential, which could mean a higher quality of life for his family. It's an investment.

My belief is that it would be the same case if today one switched from programming to medicine, or any other specialized field - some years of catching up and then one day, that person is qualified to practice their craft like anyone else in that field who is qualified.

What do you think of "micro ORMs" like knex.js, or Dapper for C#? I personally agree with you and my personal projects just use stored procedures, but these micro orms have always piqued my interest since they're just a SQL abstraction for building single queries.
